Chapter 7 - Chapter 5 — Duke of Frost

I – The Shard's Awakening

Within the citadel of Frostreach, silence reigned.

Pillars of ice stretched upward like the ribs of a frozen god, catching the moonlight in tones of blue and silver. At their center sat Duke Valen, draped in robes of woven froststeel, a chalice frozen in his hand.

He raised it, and the wine inside crystallized before touching his lips.

"So the fallen emperor stirs again."

His voice rang clear across the throne hall. "Let him come. The north has long belonged to the gods."

He spread his palm. A sliver of pale light pulsed beneath the skin — the Divine Shard of Winter's Breath — and the air itself obeyed, spiraling into delicate snow. The shard pulsed, feeding him cold, arrogant power.

The courtiers knelt, half-frozen in reverence.

"The Empire fell because it chained mortals to faith," Valen declared.

"I will forge a kingdom of divinity — and I alone will rule it."

The ice around his throne cracked outward in slow, deliberate veins, humming with restrained energy.

II – The Frozen Court

Valen's generals entered, armored in frost-runed mail. They bowed deeply.

"My lord," said Captain Rovek, "Lord Maelric's host has been broken. The Imperial banner marches north."

Valen smiled thinly.

"Good. Let them march. Let them freeze upon our borders."

He walked to the window wall, overlooking the endless white. In the distance, faint embers of torchlight flickered — Kael's army advancing beneath the storm.

"He believes loyalty grants him power. But loyalty dies when fear returns."

He turned toward his captains. "Summon the Shard-Chorus. The ice will sing before dawn."

The room darkened as he spoke; the temperature plummeted until even sound seemed to freeze mid-air.

III – The Emperor's Vigil

Far to the south, Kael stood upon a snow-covered ridge, the wind clawing at his cloak. The Imperial camp stretched below — lines of fire, shields glimmering like constellations.

He watched the horizon where storm clouds twisted unnaturally.

"He wields a divine shard," Kael said quietly.

"Its presence distorts faith."

Serin approached, his breath steaming.

"Your Majesty, our scouts felt their hearts weaken near the northern passes. The air itself steals courage."

Kael's eyes glowed faintly gold.

"Then we adapt," Kael replied.

"Loyalty is stronger than frost."

He raised his hand, and lines of golden light spread through the camp — connecting tents, standards, and soldiers alike into a lattice of faint luminescence.

The army knelt as one, voices rising in solemn unison. Their breath turned to light.

IV – Storm Before Dawn

The storm hit at midnight.

Sheets of ice descended like spears, but the golden web around the Imperial army pulsed brighter with each impact.

Kael stood at its center, calm, one hand resting upon his sword.

"The gods may bless shards," he murmured, "but I command hearts."

Lightning split the sky — blue against gold — and for an instant the two powers met across the storm.

The system flared:

[Divine Suppression Reduced]

The frost winds weakened; the banners of Veyrion rose again.

Kael's gaze pierced the night. Somewhere beyond the storm, Valen's laughter echoed — loud, defiant, hollow.

V – The Duke's Challenge

At dawn, when the storm broke, a single messenger approached under a banner of truce — half-frozen but alive.

He fell to his knees before Kael's command tent.

"My lord," he gasped, "the Duke bids you parley. At the midpoint between the mountains — tonight."

Kael studied him for a long moment, then turned to Serin.

"Prepare the guard. I will meet him."

Serin frowned. "Majesty, it could be a trap."

"It will be," Kael said. "But I must see the face of arrogance before I break it."

VI – The Frozen Summit

Night descended once more. At the edge of the mountain pass, where ice met ancient stone, two thrones faced each other — one of frost, one of flame.

Valen arrived surrounded by pale light, every step turning snow to crystal.

Kael waited, unflinching.

"Emperor," Valen greeted mockingly, "the world whispers of your return. Tell me — do you still believe men can rival gods?"

Kael's answer was a calm whisper that cut through the wind.

"I believe gods fear what they cannot command."

The storm shuddered. Frost cracked beneath Valen's feet.

Both men turned away at once, the air between them thick with unseen fire. The war for Frostreach had begun.

VII – Epilogue – Faith and Frost

Back in camp, Kael stood before the golden network burning across the snow. Each pulse carried the echo of a thousand loyal hearts.

"The shard feeds on divinity," he said softly, "but my throne feeds on devotion."

He closed his eyes as the system's hum deepened.

[Empire Power: 17.9% → 20.6%]

[New Empire Tier Milestone Approaching: Rising Empire]

[Next Objective: Break the Shard of Winter's Breath]

Kael opened his eyes — cold, determined, infinite.

"Let the north freeze," he whispered. "I will teach it to kneel warm again."

Snow began to fall, soft as ash, as the Emperor of Veyrion turned toward his first divine war.
