Dahlia's POV
"Why shouldn't he take responsibility? Louis abandoned her and her mother when they needed him most!" Elana's voice cracked with fury. "Years ago, when Selina walked away from him, she left with nothing but the clothes on her back. She nearly died because of what that family put her through. If Cara hadn't made her life a living hell, Selina would still be alive today."
Elana caught herself getting carried away. She inhaled deeply, then reached over to squeeze my hand with surprising tenderness. "Dahlia, you don't need to be scared anymore. I'm going to make sure you walk back into that house with your head held high. And if anyone even thinks about treating you badly, they'll have to go through me first."
Words failed me completely. The pain in Elana's eyes told me everything I needed to know about her friendship with my mother. It reminded me so much of what Lorena and I once shared.
