Chapter 227 - Chapter 228: Does Having More People Really Help?

The sound of rustling leaves filled the air, coming from every direction, leaving no blind spots.

Turner watched as a large group of savages burst out from the forest, surrounding Luke in the center. There were easily fifty or sixty of them, a formidable crowd.

Turner stared in surprise at the group. They were burly, dressed in crude clothing made of animal hides and woven leaves, barely covering their lower bodies. Their skin was smeared with colorful war paint, and their faces were adorned with gruesome bone ornaments, giving them a fierce, barbaric appearance.

"Gurgle-gurgle!"

"Da-da-ka!"

"So-so-ji!"

The savages circled Turner, shouting words he couldn't understand, seemingly demanding that he drop his weapon and surrender.

After a while, seeing that Turner wasn't complying, they raised their crude spears, pointing them at him in a threatening stance, ready to attack.

For a tribe living on an island, clearly lacking metalworking skills, the presence of metal spearheads on their weapons wasn't something the audience would likely question too closely. These savages, decked out in animal hides, feathers, and menacing war paint with pale bone ornaments, perfectly fit the audience's fantasy of ferocious, untamed warriors. That was enough.

As the savages closed in, Turner quickly stepped back, pressing his back against a large tree to avoid being attacked from behind.

Four or five savages stepped forward at once, thrusting their spears fiercely toward him.

In a close-up shot, the spearheads gleamed menacingly in the sunlight.

Turner didn't flinch. Instead, he advanced. His spear, a hefty 2.7 meters long, far outmatched the savages' shorter 1.8-meter weapons.

The saying "an inch longer, an inch stronger" proved true in that moment.

With a single sweep of his spear, Turner executed a precise horizontal deflection technique, striking the savages' spears with deadly accuracy.

Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud!

Five rapid clashes of spear against spear rang out in quick succession.

The savages felt their hands go numb, unable to hold onto their weapons as Turner knocked them flying.

His strikes weren't random; he targeted the weak points in their grip, hitting precisely where their old strength had faded and new strength hadn't yet formed.

After disarming them with a sweeping motion, Turner didn't stop. With a flick of his spear's tip, he followed up with a "Dragon's Tail Swing."

Under his immense strength, the spear shaft bent into a massive semicircular arc.

Boom!

It was as if a thunderclap had erupted in the sky.

As the spear straightened, the tremendous force unleashed a chilling whistle, sweeping through the group of savages.

In their stunned expressions, six of the front-line warriors were sent flying by a single strike.

"Ouch!"

"Ow!"

"Ohh!"

The fallen warriors groaned in pain, their cries a universal language.

Watching Luke's heroic display, Depp couldn't help but comment from behind the camera. "Luke's spear technique is seriously cool. Is this how spears are used? Why's it so different from the Western style we're used to?"

"Western spear techniques focus mainly on thrusting, usually with a rigid shaft," Bob explained. "But spears require a tough yet flexible shaft. That's what allows for techniques like thrusting, lifting, deflecting, blocking, seizing, picking, pressing, slashing, and snapping."

"I've seen Luke wield a longsword before, all graceful and elegant," Annie chimed in. "But seeing him with a spear now, showing a completely different side, is such a pleasant surprise. I bet the audience will feel the same."

"Exactly," Director Verbinski nodded. "In this movie, Luke's facing tougher enemies, so he's upgraded his weapon to a more commanding spear. It's clearly working well."

"Is Luke even human?" Depp asked. "How does he master so many weapons, each to such a jaw-dropping level?"

"Don't look at me," bob said, shaking his head. "I have no idea how he does it. So-called masters spend their whole lives and still can't reach even one of Luke's weapon skills."

"I love this scene," Verbinski said, finally easing his long-held concerns. "I was worried Pirates of the Caribbean 2 might turn into a comedy, but Luke's fight scenes balance it out, making it more well-rounded and complete."

In the dense jungle, Turner was like a tiger among sheep.

His spear moved like a nimble dragon, weaving through the savages, leaving them wailing in chaos.

When designing this action sequence, Luke deliberately avoided the spear's most common move: thrusting. A thrust would inevitably lead to piercing an opponent, with blood and gore.

That wouldn't align with Disney's need for family-friendly content, so Luke focused on moves like slashing, snapping, picking, and sweeping.

These wide, powerful swings made his moves dynamic and unstoppable, exuding an air of relentless dominance.

Plus, enemies struck by these moves didn't need to show graphic blood effects, keeping it suitable for younger viewers.

In just a few dozen seconds, nearly half the savages were down, groaning in pain.

The remaining ones stepped back, fear creeping into their eyes.

Suddenly, a few savages pulled out tubular objects from their waists, putting them to their mouths and aiming at Turner.

"Blow darts? Coated with sedative or deadly poison?" Turner instantly sensed the danger.

This was a common hunting tactic for such tribes—poisoned needles shot through blowpipes, effective for long-range kills.

A well-trained savage could make these weapons just as deadly as a bow and arrow within 20 meters, with the added advantage of being harder to detect.

Pfft!

Pfft!

Several savages blew into their pipes at once.

Pfft… sss…

One seemed to misfire, glancing around awkwardly.

Facing the darts, Turner stayed calm. He spun his spear rapidly, like a giant fan.

Ding!

Ding!

Ding!

With a few crisp metallic clinks, the poisoned darts were knocked out of the air.

At that moment, despair washed over the savages, their eyes filled with fear as they seemed ready to flee.

"No one's going anywhere!"

Turner leaped high, raising his spear overhead with both hands.

A smashing strike!

With the momentum of his descent, he slammed the spear into the ground.

Boom!
