Chapter 228: The Egg Shop
Besides the victory over the Southern Cloud Gym, Kenji also earned another Hex Core draw.
After returning to the Pokémon Center and sending Arbok for a full check-up, Kenji went back to his room.
He summoned the System interface in his mind with practiced ease.
Even though he had done this many times, the excitement of drawing a Hex Core never faded.
Ding!! Hex Core drawing...
The Hex Core wheel began to spin!! As it spun faster and faster, Kenji's heart tightened in anticipation.
Finally, the wheel slowed down and came to a stop.
Ding!! Congratulations Host on obtaining the Gold Hex Core: Trade Sector!!! —
Kenji paused. Trade Sector?
In the game, Trade Sector gave a free shop refresh every round.
But that was in the game. His System didn't have a "card pool." What was he supposed to refresh with Trade Sector?
Filled with confusion and curiosity, Kenji clicked on the description.
[Gold Hex Core: Trade Sector]
Effect: Opens a shop containing 5 Pokémon Eggs. The Host can purchase them using Gold Coins.
The Egg Shop has one free refresh chance every day.
After reading the description, Kenji's curiosity about this "Egg Shop" piqued.
As the thought crossed his mind, a panel very similar to the TFT shop interface appeared before his eyes.
But unlike the game units, this shop displayed five Pokémon Eggs.
Five eggs of different colors and patterns stood there quietly. Some had red spots, others had patterns resembling green grass.
Looking closely, Kenji noticed different colored glows around the eggs.
White, Green, and Purple.
Kenji scanned them, and information appeared above each egg.
The three eggs glowing White had E-Rank and F-Rank potential.
The Green egg had C-Rank potential.
The Purple egg had the highest potential, reaching A-Rank.
Kenji realized immediately that the colors corresponded to potential, similar to unit costs in TFT.
In the game:
1-Cost = White (Gray)
2-Cost = Green
3-Cost = Blue
4-Cost = Purple
5-Cost = Gold
Here in the Egg Shop:
White = F/E Rank
Green = D/C Rank
Blue = B Rank
Purple = A Rank
Gold = S Rank
With one free refresh per day, Kenji didn't hesitate.
An A-Rank Pokémon wasn't attractive enough for him anymore.
With a thought, he chose to refresh.
In the next instant, the five eggs vanished, replaced by five new ones.
But when Kenji scanned the colors, his face fell.
Five eggs. All glowing white.
Although the probabilities weren't listed, rolling a high-tier egg seemed extremely difficult with just one refresh a day.
But Kenji wasn't in a hurry. He had plenty of time. He would just refresh daily until something good popped up.
...
Over the next few days, Kenji kept his promise and brought his Pokémon to train at the Southern Cloud Gym.
While the others trained, Kenji spent time bonding with Snivy.
Snivy was a little guy who had lacked affection growing up, but at the same time, it possessed a deeply ingrained tsundere streak.
This meant that every time Kenji hugged or petted it, Snivy would act like it was struggling and refusing, all while clearly enjoying it.
If a Level 10+ Pokémon truly resisted, Kenji wouldn't have been able to get close.
But knowing better than to point it out, Kenji let Snivy keep its little pride.
Once Snivy completely let down its guard, Kenji finally decided to upgrade it to 4-Stars.
In his room at the Pokémon Center, Kenji held the sleeping Snivy in his arms.
Curled into a ball, clutching its leafy tail with its small hands, Snivy slept soundly.
Even sleeping, it's so cute.
Kenji poked its cheek gently. Thanks to Ninetales's Hypnosis, Snivy didn't wake up.
Retracting his hand, Kenji focused on the task.
He pulled a Lesser Neeko (Lesser Champion Duplicator) from the System space and used it on the sleeping Snivy.
Ding!! Congratulations Host on synthesizing a 2-Star Snivy!!
Ding!! Snivy Level raised from LV.13 to LV.14!!
Ding!! 2-Star Snivy's Potential has increased!!
Ding!! 2-Star Snivy has awakened a Second Ability: Storm Drain!!
...
The familiar notifications rang out.
Storm Drain was a very strong Ability.
It drew all Water-type moves used by any Pokémon on the field to the user, and if hit by a Water move, the user's Special Attack rose by one stage instead of taking damage.
However... this ability felt a bit mismatched for a Grass-type like Snivy.
Normally, no trainer would be stupid enough to use a Water-type move against a Grass-type.
And...
Kenji frowned, looking back at Snivy's first Ability.
Contrary.
He wondered if the "Special Attack rise" effect of Storm Drain would be inverted by Contrary.
Practice is the sole criterion for testing truth.
Kenji paused the Star-Up process. He had Ninetales wake Snivy up and took it down to the training field.
On the ground, Snivy released its tail, rubbed its eyes with its little hands, and looked around in confusion.
When its gaze landed on Kenji, a flicker of relief passed through its eyes.
"Snivi..."
Snivy stood up and waved at Kenji.
Kenji crouched down, patted its head, and pointed at a rock on the field. "Snivy, use Magical Leaf on that rock!"
