Chapter 140: The Application of Iron Defense
Kenji had a guess. After the initial surprise, his heart filled with excitement and appreciation.
This technique could drastically increase a Pokémon's defensive capabilities in battle. Its boost to combat strength was self-evident.
"AGGRON!!—"
Aggron turned, opening its large mouth, electricity gathering within.
"BOOM!!—"
Thunderbolt! Electricity shot from Aggron's mouth, transforming into a winding snake of lightning.
Gyarados twisted its body, hastily retreating, barely dodging the thick bolt of lightning.
As Gyarados was forced back, Aggron clenched its fists. With a roar, several sharp stones materialized around it.
Stone Edge!!
"SWISH! SWISH! SWISH!!—"
With the sound of rushing air, several long, sharp stones flew toward Gyarados.
Gyarados roared, swinging its Aqua Tail to meet them. With a series of explosions, the sharp stones shattered into dust, easily crushed by the Aqua Tail.
Having dealt with the Stone Edge, Gyarados attempted to close in on Aggron again to attack.
Aggron reached down with both hands, grabbing large boulders from the ground beside it and hurling them at Gyarados.
Smack Down!
Boulders arced through the air, smashing toward Gyarados. Gyarados's massive body became incredibly agile, moving like a loach in water, weaving left and right to easily dodge the falling rocks.
It rushed in front of Aggron again.
Aqua Tail slashed down from above, aiming for Aggron's head.
Aggron raised one arm, using localized Iron Defense again. Meanwhile, its other hand, wreathed in electricity, grabbed at Gyarados's body.
Thunder Punch!!
"THUD!!!—" Aqua Tail slammed down heavily, hitting Aggron's arm again. Although the defense was reinforced, the force didn't diminish, smashing Aggron down a few inches.
Then, Gyarados used the momentum to bounce off, leveraging the force of the Aqua Tail to launch its entire body into the air.
Because of this, Aggron's Thunder Punch missed.
Leaping into the air, Gyarados suddenly twisted, pointing its body downward again, aiming at Aggron below. A water curtain enveloped it once more—a familiar sight.
Gyarados was clearly preparing for Aqua Meteor.
Ideally, using Aqua Meteor now was risky.
If Protect failed during the combination move, the massive recoil from Aqua Meteor could severely injure Gyarados, turning it into a double-edged sword.
But undeniably, Aqua Meteor was the only way to end the battle quickly.
Aggron's localized Iron Defense was troublesome. Not just for an Elite-level Gyarados that hadn't reached the Gym Leader-level yet, but even for an Elite Four-level Pokémon, it would be a headache.
Only the power of Gyarados's Aqua Meteor was enough to ignore Aggron's localized Iron Defense and deal heavy damage.
Brockton was shocked. He hadn't expected Gyarados to be able to use such a terrifyingly powerful move again.
On the field, Aggron, with its Heavy Metal ability, was locked onto by Gyarados's aura and slowed by Scary Face. Dodging was unrealistic; it had to take the hit.
Aggron crossed its arms in front of its chest, its body erupting with a metallic sheen.
"BOOM!!!—"
Gyarados became a meteor, falling once again.
Under everyone's gaze, it plummeted straight down, faster and faster, finally smashing into Aggron below.
"THUD!!!—"
With a muffled sound, Aggron's heavy body was sent flying backward like a cannonball. Its feet dug into the ground, plowing two deep furrows.
On the other side, Gyarados stood its ground, a pained expression on its face.
Clearly, a small error occurred during the execution of Aqua Meteor, causing Gyarados to fail to negate all the recoil.
The recoil from Aqua Meteor wasn't easy to bear. Without the full protection of Protect, the recoil alone would have been enough to severely injure Gyarados, potentially knocking it out, if not for the Edge of Night.
Fortunately, Gyarados had the protection of Edge of Night. Once the recoil reached a certain level, the item's invincibility state triggered.
Conversely, Aggron stood motionless, its arms still crossed in front of its chest.
Kenji frowned, unsure why Aggron was just standing there.
Just as Kenji wondered, Aggron moved. Its arms dropped, revealing the eyes they had been shielding.
Kenji saw that Aggron's eyes had turned into swirls. It had lost consciousness at some point.
Yet, even unconscious, its body remained standing.
...
"Aggron is unable to battle! Gyarados wins!!"
...
"Congratulations. This is the Summit Badge."
Brockton's tone was stiff as he handed the badge to Kenji. His expression was unnatural, even awkward.
After all, being swept 3-0 by a college freshman with a single Pokémon wasn't exactly glorious.
Although Kenji was very interested in how Brockton trained Aggron to master localized Iron Defense, he really didn't like Brockton.
So he didn't ask. He thanked him politely, took the badge, and left.
As for the training method for localized Iron Defense? Worst case, he could just ask Metropolis Academy for it later.
This localized Iron Defense reminded Kenji of a concept from another anime.
That concept was called Armament Haki.
Of course, it was just an association; the principles were different.
