Although Huang Ying was temporarily out of danger, her injuries were so severe that she still had to remain in the ICU.
Her parents cried and laughed at the same time — their daughter's life had been far too bitter.
Lu Shiyan stayed in the hospital for an entire day. It wasn't until nightfall that the doctor finally allowed him to visit Huang Ying, and even then, only for three minutes.
Aunt Liao didn't quite understand why Lu Shiyan cared so much about her daughter, but since he was her child's lifesaver, she could hardly refuse.
Lu Shiyan changed into a sterile gown, disinfected his hands, and entered the ICU.I followed closely behind him.
Even before stepping inside, I was so nervous I could barely breathe. How was Huang Ying's condition?Would she still be able to see me?
Lu Shiyan's face was as heavy as his footsteps — silent and grim.
When we reached the bed, the girl lying there was hooked up to all kinds of medical devices.
I reached her first. "Xiaoying, how are you?"
Though her eyes were half-open and she looked utterly exhausted, there was a strange clarity in them — not the vacant, unfocused look she'd had before.
But she was staring straight through me — at Lu Shiyan.
Could it be that she couldn't see me anymore?
I waved my hand vigorously in front of her eyes. "Xiaoying, it's me!"
Standing at her bedside, Lu Shiyan spoke in a low, steady voice, his earlier agitation gone."Do you still recognize me?"
Huang Ying's lips trembled as she spoke with effort, "Mr… Lu."
Good — her mind was clear.
Before Lu Shiyan could say another word, Huang Ying continued weakly, "Where's… Wanwan-jiejie? Why didn't she… come in with you?"
Her voice was faint, broken — yet those few words hit Lu Shiyan like a thunderclap.
His pupils dilated suddenly. "What… what did you just say? Where is Su Wan?" he stammered.
Huang Ying answered seriously, "When the car hit me, Wanwan-jiejie was right next to you. Didn't you see her?"
At that moment, I finally understood what Chinese-style horror meant.
Only one person had entered the room — but now there were two.
If I were still alive and someone said that to me, I would've lost my mind on the spot.
Luckily, I was already dead. Instead of fear, I actually felt a twisted sense of amusement.
I fixed my gaze on Lu Shiyan's face — beads of cold sweat were already forming on his forehead.
Huang Ying, unaware of his terror, kept murmuring softly, "And to think, I really believed Wanwan-jiejie was dead… She's alive after all. That scared me so much, but I'm glad she's fine."
"What do you mean Su Wan's dead? What are you talking about?!"
Things had gone far beyond his control now. Lu Shiyan's emotions were unraveling fast.
Huang Ying flinched at his tone, but unlike before, her mind seemed steadier after the accident. She didn't panic or scream.
Though frightened, she still spoke in a small voice: "It was the night of your wedding. I had just finished my part-time job when I saw a man throwing a woman into a car. There was so much blood on her waist — it soaked the seat."
"You saw her face clearly?"
"I was terrified. Just before the car door closed, her head drooped to the side, and I caught a glimpse… The woman looked a lot like Wanwan-jiejie."
By now, Lu Shiyan's legs were trembling. His chest rose and fell violently, his face filled with disbelief.
But Huang Ying continued softly, "I thought it was Wanwan-jiejie. I was so scared. I ran to the police station to report it, but before I could, I was kidnapped by traffickers… That's how I disappeared that night."
The sweat that had started as a thin sheen on Lu Shiyan's forehead was now dripping in heavy beads down his cheeks.
His whole body shook, his breathing turning ragged.
"You… you…"It took him a long time to string words together. "So… you saw her today?"
Huang Ying blinked in confusion but still answered kindly, "Yes, of course. She was right next to you. When she saw me, she ran straight over."
"What… what did she look like?" Lu Shiyan asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Huang Ying thought for a moment, then smiled faintly. "Wanwan-jiejie was wearing a white dress. Her hair was down, and she looked just as gentle as before. There was even a faint glow around her — like an angel."
Then she added with innocent puzzlement, "But it's strange… It's the middle of winter, yet Wanwan-jiejie was only wearing a thin dress — and she was barefoot. Isn't she cold?"
The moment her words fell, there was a loud thud.
Lu Shiyan collapsed to the ground — and fainted.
