Chapter 2 - How It All Began

"Maybe you just forgot, rest up a bit," the doctor replied, a hint of uncertainty present in her tone.

Levi lowered his head, his hair falling over as his past memories suddenly rushed back.

Magical creatures had been terrorizing the surface for as long as he could remember, forcing humans to settle underground just out of reach of the creatures.

It all started on a bright summer morning, the sun's rays hitting the streets as birds chirped. Levi had just gone out to play with his friends at 7 years old.

He played for a few hours but his mom's voice reminded him to go back home for lunch.

"Levi, food is ready!" His mom shouted from the window, her calm and loving voice immediately made Levi hungry just to taste her delicious meals.

"I'm coming," he stood up from a sidewalk, waving at his friends as he stepped back slowly. "Guys, I'll be back in a minute."

Just before he could open the door, a massive pool of blood flowed out from beneath the door. His eyes widened in fear as he reluctantly opened the door, his hand trembling.

"Mom! Dad! Where are you!" He screamed, debating whether to run away or look for his parents.

"Run Levi!"

Levi immediately ran, the sound of his mom's voice increasing with each step.

'Run, but what about mom and dad. What do I do?' he thought as he ran in an unsteady gait.

Suddenly, a tall figure appeared before him, a single step strong enough to blow his small and fragile body away. He burst into tears, as he cuddled himself on the floor in anxiety.

A human who looked as old as a father who happened to be running in the opposite direction carried him to safety and his eyes closed as his mind couldn't handle the traumatic experience.

The last things he could remember was the Titan and the sun's color shifting to crimson red.

He never knew what happened to his parents, even till this day.

After humans had adapted, different factions were formed; The Attack Division, The Research Division, and the Support Division.

The AD as people called it was a group of brilliant fighters who fought relentlessly against the magical creatures in the hopes of one day reclaiming the world above the ground.

The RD is one of the most essential factions, tasked with dedicating their time into researching on the creatures, hoping to discover means of defeating them.

The SD is the backbone of the entire project as they offered aid to the AD. Only the best people with healing magic made it to the top ranks of this faction. They wore long white laboratory coats with files in their palms.

A voice abruptly brought Levi back to the present.

"He's ok, right? Do you have his blood sample?" The female voice requested.

Levi looked up and saw the woman who spoke, her clothing exactly fitting the description of someone from the Research Division — long lab coat and a few files in her hand.

'Wow I've never seen them in person. She's probably a higher rank than the others because of the weird badge on her pocket.'

The researcher looked at Levi and approached him. Extending his arm, she took a syringe and stabbed it directly into a vein. She took a sample of his blood and went out of the room.

"She just took my blood without my permission? Talk about being rude," Levi said jokingly as the others laughed over it.

"Ok, rest now. Rest is the best healer," the doctor said, leaving the room.

Carl and Val immediately rested their heads on their separate beds, their pain evident through their faces. They squeezed their faces, twitched, and moved around restlessly. It was obvious they were in excruciating pain.

After a few days, some thrill seekers has been discharged including Levi, and Carl and Val had become slightly better.

'At least they aren't fainting every few minutes,' Levi thought as he smiled softly at them.

As he walked away from the underground hospital, his destination was his makeshift home he made from an abandoned house. He was too poor to get a house for himself and he had no magic power to work under the Attack Division. His only source of income was the monthly support his fellow thrill seekers helped him with.

The thoughts of his parents still bothered him and he made it a mission to find them. That was part of the reason he kept revisiting the world above the surface.

But what bothered him even more was the voice that dwelled within him. It still talked to him at times but in just words and not complete sentences. But during the time he spent at the hospital, it grew increasingly disturbing.

'What's happening to me. What is this voice,' he thought, clenching his fists as he was sick of being ignorant.

He walked even faster to his home to document his events and possibly understand what he was facing. Was it a magical creature? It made sense since the rod that hit him was similar to the one that attacked the others.

Either way, it was a ticket to Levi entering the AD and finally beating the loop of poverty.

As he made it home, he brought out the rusted key he found in the home the first time he went there and opened the door with it. It was a rundown apartment as expected, the ceiling was about to collapse and small quakes caused unrepairable damages.

"At least I'll get out of here soon." He picked his shoes and took it inside to clean them, simultaneously grabbing an old journal he kept on the floor beside his door.

"Time to continue my novel," he said, his eyes widening with a bit of joy. His only hobby was writing novels in his spare time and that inspired him to document his entire life, trying to understand what was going on.

As he dropped his shoes off and sat on his half destroyed couch, he felt a heavy pang in his head, followed by the childish voice.

"Let me in," the voice said. It almost felt like it was the only thing the voice could say, just like a baby repeating words.
