Chapter 27 - the punishment

The Slip

It happened over something small — it always did.

Layla had been setting the table for dinner, stacking plates carefully like Mrs. Harris taught her. But her hands were shaky, her mind still stuck on the words she'd overheard from the caseworker: Jayden. Juvenile detention.

The plate slipped.

It hit the floor with a crack, shards scattering across the tile.

Layla gasped, frozen.

Kevin snickered from the doorway. "Guess the 'good girl' ain't so good after all."

---

The Reaction

Mrs. Harris rushed in, her face tight with frustration. "Layla! What did I say about being careful?"

"I—I'm sorry," Layla stammered, tears already pricking her eyes.

But sorry wasn't enough.

Mrs. Harris grabbed her by the arm, not hard enough to bruise, but firm enough to make Layla wince. "You've been given a home, young lady. Food, clothes, a bed. You don't get to be careless. Do you understand?"

Layla nodded quickly, her throat closing.

Mrs. Harris marched her upstairs and pointed to the corner of her room. "Stand there. No talking. No moving until I say so."

It felt less like discipline and more like a sentence.

The Corner

Minutes crawled into an hour. Her legs ached, her back stiff. She wanted to cry, but she bit it back. Crying only made it worse.

From the hallway, she heard Kevin whisper to Andre: "Told you she's just another screw-up."

Her cheeks burned. She wanted to scream. She wanted to throw something. But she didn't. She stood silent, her stuffed bunny limp in her hand.

Because in this house, mistakes weren't forgiven. They were punished.

The Promise She Made Herself

When Mrs. Harris finally let her sit, Layla collapsed onto the bed, her legs trembling.

She clutched her bunny and whispered into its matted fur:

"I'll never let them see me break again."

It wasn't just a promise. It was survival.

But beneath the quiet vow, a storm was brewing. Because if the system punished her for being human, then maybe being the "good girl" wasn't enough anymore.
