Thankfully the officers didn't fine her. They just made Masao pay for what Jahy had eaten.
To be fair, it wasn't much—just a few simple snacks. The total bill didn't even reach a thousand yen (7 USD).
After a stern lecture aimed at Jahy, the police finally took their leave. With the show over, the small crowd that had gathered began to drift away as well.
Finally free, Jahy rolled her shoulders and let out a low grumble of indignation.
"The audacity! To lay hands on me, the great Jahy-sama, for merely partaking in a little sustenance!"
Masao tucked his wallet back into his pocket.
"This isn't your old world. Here, you pay for what you take. They gave you a warning. Next time you pull a stunt like that, they'll haul you off to the police station and lock you up."
Jahy wasn't entirely sure what a 'police station' was, but 'lock you up' sounded an awful lot like a prison. The very notion was preposterous.
Her, the magnificent Jahy-sama, caged like a common beast? Unthinkable.
Her gaze drifted back to the pocket where Masao kept his money.
'So, those illustrated slips of paper are the key,' she realized. 'With those, I can claim any delicacy I desire.'
A determined glint lit her eyes. She thrust her hand out imperiously.
"Masao. Provide me with this currency."
He swatted her hand away. "I just bailed you out, and you still owe me a wish. Don't push your luck by asking for money on top of that."
Jahy felt not a shred of remorse. Instead, she doubled down on her audacity.
"I agreed to grant you one request, it's true. But a great ruler cannot fulfill wishes on an empty stomach! The very least you can do is ensure I am properly nourished first!"
Whether she had any intention of honoring her debt was debatable, but if she was going to play along, she would milk this for all it was worth.
Masao let out a long, weary sigh.
"Fine. Just one meal. My treat." He told himself, firmly, that this had absolutely nothing to do with the vague, potentially magical promise.
It was pity, seeing a fellow being—even a demonic one—suffer from hunger. That was all.
Of course, if she happened to feel grateful and wanted to reward him later... well, he was only human. A little demonic gratitude never hurt anyone.
"Victory!" Jahy cheered, her foul mood vanishing.
She grabbed his arm and began pulling him down the street with surprising strength.
"Onward! I spotted several intriguing morsels I was cruelly denied earlier!"
—
Minutes later, Jahy's hands were overflowing with food. She took alternating bites from a skewer of grilled meat and a fluffy pastry, her face a picture of bliss.
Masao trailed beside her, holding a cup of sweet bubble tea, from which she would periodically lean over to take a loud, satisfied sip.
"Aahhh~!" she exhaled, content. "This is a life worthy of the great Jahy!"
Her brief, harrowing encounter with the law was already a distant memory.
"And to think the food in the human world is so... delectable!" she admitted through a full mouth.
Back in the demon realm, culinary arts were rudimentary at best, lacking the complex spices and techniques of this world. The difference was like night and day.
She glanced sideways at Masao, who was watching her with a strange expression.
"Masao. Why do you refrain from partaking?" she asked, curious.
She'd noticed the way his eyes lingered on the food, the subtle, involuntary gulps. The desire was plain on his face, yet he hadn't so much as nibbled a single crumb.
Masao swallowed, a wave of regret washing over him. This wasn't a treat; it was torture.
"I'm... I'm on a diet," he confessed miserably. "I have to be careful. This is all... very high-caloric."
"A diet?" The concept was foreign to her, but the implication—that he was denying himself these incredible flavors—struck her as a tragedy of the highest order. "How pitiful! To be surrounded by such bounty and yet be forbidden from tasting it... Do not despair! The great Jahy-sama shall devour it all in your stead!"
Watching the joy on her face with every bite, Masao found his irritation melting away, replaced by a warm sense of satisfaction. It was almost... rewarding.
A sudden, impulsive urge to see just how happy he could make her took hold.
"Here, Jahy. Try this." He held out a golden-brown, deep-fried stick.
"Hm? What manner of offering is this?"
It was coated in a glistening, sticky sauce. It smelled divine. Without hesitation, she took a large bite. A satisfying crunch gave way to tender, savory meat inside, the flavor rich and slightly sweet.
"Mmph! Acceptable!"
"It's meat! So delicious!"
Seeing her eyes light up, Masao explained,
"It's a chicken karaage stick. Deep-fried chicken. The coating is a cheese sauce."
Jahy chewed vigorously, nodding as she savored the flavor. "A chicken stick. I see. I grant it my approval. This 'cheese' substance is also worthy of praise."
Masao had a feeling she'd missed a rather crucial part of the name, but he let it slide. The feeding frenzy continued.
"Here. A cream puff."
"Now, this sandwich cookie."
"Try this pudding."
Under Masao's relentless catering, the consequences became visibly, and apparent.
Jahy's stomach began to swell, pressing noticeably against the fabric of her clothes.
"Mmmph—!"
Her eyes widened. One hand flew to her mouth while the other waved in surrender.
"C-cease! I must... I must halt all consumption! I implore you, stop!"
She had been swept away in the ecstasy of it all, accepting every morsel he presented. Only now did the full, devastating reality of her gluttony hit her.
She felt dizzy, seeing spots at the edges of her vision—not from magic, but from being perilously full.
Seeing she had well and truly reached her limit, Masao finally relented.
"Had enough?"
"I have reached a critical capacity," Jahy affirmed with a weak nod, punctuating her statement with a hiccup. "The feast is concluded."
"Right. I'm heading home, then."
As he turned to leave, Jahy stumbled a step closer.
"Where do you think you're going?"
"Home. As I said."
"Then I shall accompany you!"
Masao stared at the demon who now intended to follow him home. "No."
Had he lived alone, the situation might be different. But he lived with his parents. Bringing a strange, smug demon girl home was a logistical and social nightmare he was not prepared to handle.
"And why not?" she demanded, genuinely perplexed.
He laid out the simple logic of the situation.
Jahy listened, then scoffed, waving a dismissive hand.
"A trivial matter. I shall hypnotize them. Problem resolved."
"Hey! What are you planning to do to my parents?!" he snapped. Even as a transmigrator to this world, his parents here had been kind to him. He couldn't allow this. "Absolutely not! Using magic on my family is one hundred percent forbidden!"
She crossed her arms in stubborn finality.
"I don't care for your petty human rules. I have decided. Your house will serve as my new base of operations. The matter is settled."
