Chapter 9 - One step at a time, Chapter 4: episode 1

It's been an hour.

Beatrice hasn't woken up yet.

'The world is currently undergoing massive changes. Powers have begun emerging in certain individuals from all over the world, almost as if it were a game-'

The world was throw into chaos.

Right now mana was leaking in to our world, awakening the sleeping abilities and characteristics of individuals.

The apocalypse had truly begun,

Very soon monsters will appear too and devour us all.

Few will stand up to fight, and win their battles too until the higher intelligence beings invade.

None will win that battle.

"System"

A character analysis window opened up infront of me.

It was nice having this system, I could easily manage and arrange everything I need.

The system was created by Goldemar, the Dwarven king . It relied on the subconscious of the user to function properly so it wasn't advised to use it or rely on it too much.

"Change form"

[Forms currently available]

[Book

Mind]

"Book."

The system's apperance changed to that of a physical book which feel down.

It was a skill I picked up long ago when I met the Dwarven king myself and since it wasn't a physical item or physical skill which meant I could use it through out my lives.

Certain things were easier to do when this guidance system was in book form than in a floating GUI , one such thing was looking at the history of this world.

I finished reading and decided to step outside.

Beatrice was still asleep. Her body had been pushed far beyond its limits, and it would be a while before she woke.

The streets were chaos , eerily quiet, but thick with panic.

The government had declared a lockdown, yet a few people still roamed outside, drunk on newfound power, believing themselves chosen.

I was heading to the gas station to pick up petrol.

Since the world had already fallen into disarray, I didn't bother paying. There was no one left to check anyway.

Petrol had a special property for Beatrice , it fueled her flames more efficiently than anything I had at home.

And since it was liquid, it'd be easier to give her while she was unconscious.

But that wasn't my only reason for going out.

"The museum."

It held artifacts — relics from history.

Items that, by now, would be regaining their power.

And luckily for me, there was a special exhibition being held there.

In my original life, there was no such event. But with countless resets of the timeline, things shifted. Some for the worse. A few for the better.

This was one of the few good ones.

I entered the museum.

There was no guard — well, there was, but he'd already been knocked out. Thieves, most likely.

The hall was grand — statues, paintings, and relics from ages long gone lined the room.

Most of the recent artifacts were mundane, powerless.

My focus lay elsewhere — the exhibition items:

The Roman Exhibition World Tour.

I stepped into the exhibition hall.

Clink!

A knife whizzed past me. I dodged.

"What the hell are you doing here? Didn't you hear there's a lockdown?"

I turned toward the voice.

"What, trying to intimidate me?" he sneered. "Can't you see? I'm one of the gifted."

Ice spread from beneath his feet — a thin sheet of frost creeping outward.

Pathetic, but still power.

"It'd be in your best interest to leave me alone," I said quietly. "I'm not here for you."

Whether he was a robber or a murderer didn't matter.

I only came for two items.

Even if I did nothing, someone else would eventually deal with him.

"Well, that's too bad for you," he grinned. "Because I wanna test my abilities. I'm the one chosen by the gods!"

I sighed.

I suppose a fight was inevitable.
