Chapter 156 - The Splattered Mask

"HOW DARE YOU GIVE ME SOMETHING LIKE THIS?!"

Marien's voice was shrill, the sound of a woman who had finally been pushed past the limits of her carefully curated vanity. Her eyes were wild, darting from the grey sludge on the ground to the face of the sister she had spent a lifetime looking down upon.

"Dirt! You give me dirt in front of the entire court?!" Marien shrieked, her voice cracking. "You think because you've married a Duke, you can treat me like a common servant? You think a silver circlet makes you better than me?!"

Verona didn't flinch. She didn't even blink as a stray droplet of the silt landed inches from her hand. She remained perfectly still, her spine as straight as a Northern pine, her hands folded primly in her lap. She looked like a statue of a saint while her sister looked like a demon in lace.

"Marien..."
