The shadows of the Aldenar Manor had grown long as the moon climbed to its zenith. Verona stood in the center of her bedroom, her shawl wrapped tightly around her shoulders, staring at the door.
She moved silently, slipping into the hallway. Her first destination was Elric's private chambers, only a few doors down. She didn't care if it was late; she needed to see him with her own eyes.
Verona stopped before Elric's door and lifted her hand. She knocked a few times but nothing. She knocked again and again, still nothing. Verona took a deep breath and reached for the handle. She hesitated only a moment before pushing the door open and peeking inside.
The room was dark and untouched. The bed was neatly made. No sign that anyone had been there at all. Her fingers tightened around the edge of the door. She stepped back, closing it carefully.
