Chapter 18 - Chapter 19 - Sparks in the Dark

The machines hummed softly around them, casting a bluish glow that made every shadow seem sharper, every glance heavier. Scarlett's fingers flew over the keyboard, uploading the final modules of her adaptive AI design, but she couldn't focus. Not completely. Not with Nicolas standing so close, his presence a weight she could feel pressing against her.

He leaned against the console, arms crossed, watching her work with that unreadable gaze — equal parts appraisal and something darker, something dangerous. "You really do lose yourself in this," he murmured, voice low and smooth. "I can see why people notice you. Brilliance suits you."

Scarlett flushed. "I… I have to get this right. That's all."

"Right," he said softly, taking a step closer, the heat from his body brushing against hers. "But it's more than that, isn't it?" His dark eyes flicked over her, taking in the smudged ink on her fingers, the way her hair fell over her face, the curve of her neck peeking out from her blouse. "Every movement, every word… I can feel it pulling me in."

She froze, heart hammering in her chest. "I—I'm focused on the project," she said, though her voice betrayed her.

"Are you?" His hand brushed lightly against her arm, a feather touch that made her shiver. "Because it feels like you're deliberately distracting me."

Scarlett swallowed hard, every nerve alive with anticipation. "I… I'm not."

"Liar," he said, stepping even closer. The air between them felt charged, electric. His proximity, his scent, the raw intensity in his eyes — it made her knees weak, yet she stayed rooted, refusing to step back. "You don't even realize the effect you have. Every answer you give, every solution you create… it makes me want to…"

He trailed off, letting the sentence hang, teasing. Scarlett's breath caught. She wanted to finish the thought for him, to admit the same thing she felt: that her pulse raced, her body tensed, her mind spun with desire.

Nicolas reached out, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. The touch was intimate, deliberate. Scarlett's chest rose and fell rapidly. "You're playing with fire," she whispered, almost involuntarily.

"I like fire," he replied, voice low, teasing, dangerous. "And you… you're a flame I can't ignore."

Scarlett's hands trembled slightly as she turned back to the console, trying to focus, to push away the tension curling between them. Nicolas leaned behind her, his body close, his breath warm against her shoulder. "Connect the device now," he murmured. "Let's see if your brilliance can match mine."

Her fingers brushed the device into place, but she couldn't ignore the brush of his hand near hers, the heat that spread through her at every accidental touch. When the system booted, lights pulsing in sync with the AI's neural loops, Nicolas let his gaze travel from the projection to her, lingering.

"You know," he said softly, "your focus, your mind… and yes, even your clothes tonight," he added, the corner of his mouth twitching with dark amusement, "make me want to kiss you. Right here. Right now."

Scarlett froze, a shiver running through her. She wanted to argue, wanted to pull away, wanted to deny the electricity in the room. But the way his eyes held her, dark and commanding, made every rational thought evaporate.

"I… I—" she started, but words failed her.

He leaned closer, deliberately slow, letting the tension build, letting every unspoken desire hang in the air. "I don't kiss easily," he whispered, breath brushing her cheek. "But with you… I might reconsider."

Scarlett's heart thundered. She could feel the heat between them, the magnetic pull that was impossible to resist. Her fingers tightened on the console. She wasn't ready to give in, not completely. But she didn't pull away either.

In the quiet hum of machines and blinking lights, Nicolas Volkov and Scarlett Rose stood dangerously close — a collision of ambition, brilliance, and desire. Sparks weren't just flying in her AI system tonight. They were in the air between them, and neither of them could pretend they weren't aware of it.

Outside, the storm raged, rain lashing the lab windows. Inside, only the heat of their unspoken longing made the night unforgettable.
