===============================

Sun Jing was on her way to school when she spotted Issei standing at a crosswalk, waiting for the light to change.

"Oh... it's you," Issei said, glaring at the tall blonde as soon as he noticed her.

"Hm? What's up?" Sun Jing replied casually, stuffing her hands into her pants pockets.

"Hmph!" Issei crossed his arms and turned his head away from her.

"...You got a problem with me?" Sun Jing asked, genuinely confused.

"Of course I do!" Issei snapped. "You're actively ruining my dream!"

Sun Jing blinked. "...What dream?"

"To be Harem King, obviously!" Issei shouted, earning several strange looks from people passing by. He flinched. "Look at what you did now!"

Sun Jing sighed, clearly annoyed, and rubbed her temples. "You're giving me a headache... Look, I don't really understand that harem crap. But you're gonna have to get used to me being around, so suck it up."

"Tch. Just don't get too close to Rias...!" Issei muttered as the light changed and the two started walking.

"Rias?" Sun Jing glanced at him. "You like her or something? Look, man, if she wants to be friends with me, then who am I to say no?" She shrugged.

"Th-th-that's not what I was talking about!!" Issei yelled.

Issei kept ranting as they walked, his voice droning on in the background until Sun Jing mentally checked out completely.

That was when she bumped into someone.

"-Oh!"

Before the person could fall, Sun Jing reacted instantly, wrapping one arm around their waist and pulling them upright with ease.

"Uh, are you okay?" Sun Jing asked, looking down.

The person she'd caught was a beautiful young girl with long blonde hair and soft green eyes. Her hair flowed down her back, split bangs framing her forehead with a single strand sticking up and curving backward. She wore a dark teal nun outfit with light blue accents, a white veil trimmed in the same light blue, and brown boots with black X-shaped straps. A brown satchel hung at her hip, and a silver cross necklace rested against her chest.

The girl's heart raced as she looked up at Sun Jing.

"I-" she started, frozen in place.

Behind them, Issei had completely stopped mid-rant.

'This is so unfair!!' he screamed internally until his eyes dropped to the ground.

A suitcase lay open nearby, clothes and belongings scattered across the sidewalk.

"H-huh?" Issei snapped out of it and hurried over. "Ah-your stuff!"

He quickly started picking everything up while Sun Jing gently helped the girl back onto her feet.

"There you go," Sun Jing said, releasing her once she was steady.

"Oh! Thank you so much," the girl said softly, turning toward Issei as he handed her the suitcase.

"I-I-uh-it's no problem!" Issei said, face burning red as he returned it to her, refusing to meet her eyes.

"Oh, where are my manners!" the girl said, straightening her veil and smiling warmly. "My name is Asia Argento. It's nice to meet you both!"

"The name's Hyoudou Issei!" Issei said immediately, puffing out his chest. A pervy grin crept onto his face. Awh man! She's a total hottie!

Asia giggled politely, then turned her attention to Sun Jing. "If you don't mind me asking... what's your name?"

"Uh, it's Sun Jing," she replied. "But you can call me Sun if you want." She tilted her head slightly. "You don't really look like you're from around here."

"That's because I just came from Europe," Asia explained. "I was transferred to the church here in this town." Her smile softened. "But... I'm a little lost."

Issei's eyes lit up. He immediately stepped forward, trying to be subtle... though not very successfully blocking Asia's view of Sun Jing.

"I can help you out!" Issei said eagerly. "Miss Prince here doesn't know the area that well anyway, so she can't help you."

Sun Jing rolled her eyes.

Asia glanced past Issei at Sun Jing. "Oh... really?" she asked, sounding unsure.

"Uh, yeah," Sun Jing said casually. "I just moved to Kuoh Town recently. I'm actually from Tokyo."

'Not a total lie, considering the memories I've got,' she thought.

Asia's shoulders slumped slightly. "Oh... I was really hoping you'd come with us."

"Well, she can't, so let's go!" Issei said quickly, grabbing Asia's suitcase handle.

Only for Sun Jing to put a hand on his shoulder, stopping him cold.

"No," Sun Jing said calmly. She looked at Asia and smiled. "I'll tag along with you. If that's what you want, Asia."

Asia's face instantly brightened. "R-really?"

"Yeah," Sun Jing replied. "Lead the way Issei."

Issei froze in place, internally screaming as his dream scenario began slipping through his fingers.

As Issei reluctantly led the way through the streets, Sun Jing felt a familiar chime echo in her head.

So the real problem's still ahead, Sun Jing thought, glancing around the quiet neighborhood.

Walking beside her, Asia clasped her satchel with both hands and looked between the two of them curiously.

"So... are you two friends?"

"Not at all," Sun Jing replied without hesitation.

Asia blinked. "R-really? You two seem to know each other though."

"That's because we're classmates," Sun Jing said casually. "For some strange reason, he doesn't seem to like me."

Up ahead, Issei suddenly stopped and turned halfway around, shooting Sun Jing an intense death glare.

She met his eyes, completely unbothered, and gave him a flat look in return.

Asia noticed the exchange and let out a small, nervous laugh. "Ah... you two are kind of funny."

"Tch." Issei clicked his tongue and turned back around. "I'm not funny."

Sun Jing smirked faintly. "Could've fooled me."

Asia smiled again, clearly relaxing now that she wasn't alone anymore. "Thank you both for helping me. I was really worried I'd never find my way."

"No problem," Sun Jing said. "Kuoh Town's not that big once you get used to it."

Issei straightened slightly, regaining some confidence. "Yeah! You're lucky you ran into us-especially me!"

Sun Jing raised an eyebrow. "You mean lucky she ran into me."

Issei stumbled mid-step. "H-hey! Don't steal my credit!"

Asia giggled, covering her mouth. "I think you're both very kind."

"I know I've already said this, but..." Asia looked at both Sun Jing and Issei with a gentle smile. "I'm just so glad I ran into such nice people like you two. I guess someone is looking out for me, huh?" She blushed faintly.

Sun Jing reached out and patted Asia's head. "You seem like a nice girl too, Asia."

Issei noticed the silver cross necklace hanging from Asia's neck. A strange sensation crept up his spine, making him instinctively turn his head away.

"Is everything okay?" Asia asked, tilting her head.

"Huh? Oh—yeah. It's all good," Issei said quickly, forcing a smile. His expression shifted the moment he looked away again. What in the heck was that...?

Suddenly, the sound of a child crying echoed nearby.

"Hey, wait a minute!" Issei called out as Asia hurried toward the sound.

"What's she doing?" Sun Jing muttered as she and Issei followed.

They found a young boy sitting on the ground, clutching his knee as tears streamed down his face. Blood seeped from a scraped cut.

Asia knelt down beside him. "A big boy like you shouldn't cry over a scrape." She gently patted his head. "Don't worry, you're going to be fine."

She hovered her hands over the boy's knee. A silver ring formed on her finger, glowing with a soft green light. In seconds, the wound vanished as if it had never been there.

"Whoa..." Issei whispered, staring in disbelief. He suddenly winced, clutching his left arm.

"There you go, all done," Asia said warmly. "Feeling better?"

"Y-Yes! Thank you!" the boy exclaimed before running off.

Asia turned back to Sun Jing and Issei. "I'm all done now. Sorry!"

The three continued walking until Asia suddenly pointed ahead. "Hey, there it is!"

"Yup, the only one we have," Issei said, looking toward the building barely visible through the trees. That strange feeling returned—this time heavier, more dreadful.

"Does anyone even go there?" Sun Jing asked.

"You know... now that you mention it, I've never seen anyone up there," Issei replied. "Not a single person."

Asia clasped her hands together. "Let me thank you two properly. Would it be a problem if you came inside with me?"

"I can't!" Issei blurted out. "I—I have somewhere to be." His left arm trembled.

"Oh... that's okay," Asia said, clearly disappointed.

"I can come with you—" Sun Jing started to say, only for Issei to slap a hand over her mouth.

"You see, Asia, Sun and I have school! And we're going to be super late if we don't go—"

Thud.

Sun Jing elbowed Issei in the stomach.

"Ow!"

"Ignore him," Sun Jing said flatly, taking Asia's hand with a smile. "I'll walk you the rest of the way."

"No, it's fine," Asia said softly, shaking her head. "I don't want you to get in trouble. Just come visit me soon, okay? It was nice meeting you both!" She waved and headed toward the church.

"You didn't have to hit me that hard," Issei groaned.

"That was a light tap," Sun Jing replied, dragging him away by the collar. "Let's go."

{Later — Occult Research Club House}

"You must never go near that church again, Issei," Rias said firmly, standing before the massive stained-glass window with her arms crossed.

"Why?" Issei asked.

"For devils like us, the church is enemy territory," Rias explained. "Simply setting foot inside would create major problems—for both angels and devils."

"Wait," Sun Jing said, raising her hand. "Can I go inside then?"

"Y-You're like half demon or something! This should apply to you too!" Issei yelled.

"Well... normally, yes," Rias said. "But I've been doing some research since we last spoke, Sun Jing."

"Huh?" Sun Jing looked at her.

"There isn't much information," Rias continued, "but devils are essentially lesser versions of demons. The original demon was created by an unknown god—possibly connected to the biblical God. The Demon Realm exists in another dimension, and it's the birthplace of most members of the Demon Clan."

"Huh. That's interesting," Sun Jing said.

"Since you're half fairy," Rias went on, "you don't have to worry about being near the church. The only beings who could truly threaten you because of your demon side would be the Four Archangels."

She then turned to Issei, her expression serious.

"But you, Issei, must be careful. If a devil is struck by a devil-purge... they are completely annihilated. Nothing remains. No return. Do you understand?"

Later, Issei sat slumped on one couch, staring at the ceiling, while Sun Jing lay sprawled across the opposite one. She shifted, turned, then shifted again, clearly unable to get comfortable.

"Hey..." Issei finally spoke, breaking the silence and catching Sun Jing's attention. "You think Rias is mad at me?" He quickly added, "N-Not that I really care about your opinion or anything!"

Sun Jing slowly turned her head to look at him. "Are you bipolar?"

"WHY IS THAT THE FIRST THING THAT COMES TO MIND?!?!" Issei shouted, shooting upright.

"You're really confusing," Sun Jing said flatly. "Do you hate me or not? Do you want me to answer your question or not? Make up your mind."

Issei clenched his hands, looking down at them. "...I don't actually hate you."

"Oh?" Sun Jing raised an eyebrow.

"It's just that..." Issei hesitated. "A lot has happened in the past couple of days."

"Yeah," Sun Jing replied dryly. "You've got pretty shitty luck, don't you?"

"I'M TRYING TO POUR MY HEART OUT TO YOU!" Issei yelled, then sighed heavily. "Anyways... I don't hate you. I guess I'm just... I dunno. It makes me mad how easily girls swarm around you."

"So that's it?" Sun Jing asked.

"OF COURSE NOT! Just forget it!" Issei snapped, turning his head away.

Sun Jing went quiet. Thanks to her heart-reading skill, she could feel the turmoil bubbling inside him. Confusion, jealousy, fear, and a whole lot of stress tangled together.

She spoke more softly this time. "I think you just need to relax."

Issei glanced at her.

"You're obviously stressed out about everything that's been happening to you lately," Sun Jing continued. "Anyone would be."

"Listen," Sun Jing said, stretching her arms behind her head, "I'm sure Rias isn't mad at you. She just doesn't want her newest employee killed."

Issei visibly deflated at that. "Employee…? But it feels like she's always pissed off at me over something."

A soft, teasing voice spoke right behind him. "She's not pissed at you, you know. She's just worried about you, silly boy~"

"GYAH!" Issei yelped, nearly falling off the couch. He spun around. "Akeno?! You scared me!"

Then he shot an accusing look at Sun Jing. "Did you seriously not see her?!"

"I already knew what she was going to do," Sun Jing said, yawning.

"Th-Then why didn't you say anything?!"

"You didn't ask."

"Why you—!"

Akeno smoothly moved to the other couch and plopped herself down right onto Sun Jing's lap, clearly enjoying Issei's suffering. "Did you know I was going to do that too?" she asked, sticking her tongue out playfully at the blonde.

"Yes," Sun Jing replied without hesitation.

Rias entered the room just then, closing the door behind her. "Ah, I see you're still here," she said, looking over the trio.

Akeno gave Sun Jing's cheek a gentle pat before standing and walking over to Rias. "We just received a message from the Archduke," she reported.

"The Archduke?" Rias echoed.

"It's urgent," Akeno continued. "A stray devil has been causing trouble nearby."

"I see…" Rias's gaze shifted to Issei. "This is good timing. Issei, you'll be able to see how a peerage works in battle tonight."

"Huh?" Issei blinked.

Rias then turned to Sun Jing. "Would you like to come as well? You might encounter a stray devil one of these days. It's better to be prepared, just in case."

"Sure," Sun Jing said easily. "I want to learn more about this stuff and see how strong you guys really are."

Rias nodded, a small smile forming. "I'm glad you're open to learning. Perhaps we'll even let you fight. I'm quite curious to see how strong you are."
