Chapter 309 - Chapter 156

Chapter 156: The Root Directory

"A balanced 'Yes' it is," Ne Job remarked, tapping his Semicolon against the side of his new trilby. "A total democratic distribution. 100% 'Equity', 7.5% 'Unearned Confidence'. It's a bold strategy, Successor. It means we're all equally 'Overpowered' and equally 'Confused'."

Assistant Yue processed the input, her visor emitting a series of "Level-Up Fanfares" that sounded like a choir of 8-bit angels.

"DISTRIBUTING. ATTRIBUTE. POINTS. NOW," she announced. The air around the team shimmered as the +2 bonuses settled into their "Data-Streams."

The Team's Balanced Upgrade:

Character Attribute Boost New Passive Ability

Ne Job +2 Redlining "Intern's Immunity": Despite having the power of a God, he is still technically an Intern, making him 100% "Invisible" to High-Level Bosses who only look for "Managers."

Princess Ling +2 Lethality "Critical Plot-Twist": Her dagger now has a 7.5% chance to turn a "Tragedy" into a "Comedy" upon impact.

The Muse +2 Narrative Flow "Dialogue Skip": Can fast-forward through boring "Expository Monologues" from villains.

Ao Bing +2 Form "Structural Sarcasm": Can build buildings that "Mock" the surrounding environment.

Barnaby +2 Chaos "Procedural Bleat": Can spawn random "Loot Chests" by screaming at the sky.

The Threshold of the Origin

Ne Job turned to the massive, flickering Vault Door. It wasn't just a door anymore; it was a "Corrupted File" that was 100% "Unreadable" without the Master Key. He stepped forward, the iron "Hard Drive" key glowing with a fierce, golden light.

"Wait!" Ao Bing shouted, his leopard-skin robe now sporting "Nontonal Texture Maps" that made him look like he was made of velvet and starlight. "If we open this, we aren't just 'Editing' the story. We're touching the 'Root Directory'. It's the place where the 'Paragraphs' are born. It's... it's the 'Motherboard of Meaning'."

"We've come too far to stay in the 'Footnotes', Bingy," Ne Job said. He slid the Master Key into the "Port" in the center of the door.

There was no "Click." Instead, there was a "System Startup Sound" that vibrated through the very floorboards of the Bureau of Cosmic Alignment. The vault door didn't open; it "De-Materialized."

Entering the Source

They stepped through the threshold and found themselves in a world of "Pure Information."

The floor was a grid of glowing, neon-green lines extending into an infinite "Void." Floating in the air were colossal, rotating blocks of text—thousands of strings of code that formed the "Laws of Physics" for their universe.

FLOAT GRAVITY = 9.81;

BOOL IS_COFFEE_HOT = TRUE;

STRING MAIN_CHARACTER = "NE JOB (INTERN)";

"Look at that," The Muse whispered, her hair a swirling nebula of "Syntax Errors." She pointed to a massive stream of "Binary Rain" falling in the distance. "That's the 'Emotional Core'. That's where the 'Sadness' and 'Triumph' are coded. It looks like... it looks like a 'Water-Cooled Server' made of 'Dreams'."

Princess Ling drew her dagger, looking at a floating block of code that read INT ENEMY_HEALTH = 1000;. With a quick flick of her wrist, she "Edited" the 1000 into a 1.

"This 'Open World' is a lot easier when you can see the 'Math' behind the 'Malice'," she noted with a 7.5% "Predatory Grin."

The Glitch in the Machine: @The_Developer

As they ventured deeper into the Root Directory, the grid began to warp. The green lines turned a "Corrupted Crimson," and the "Binary Rain" began to freeze in mid-air.

Standing in the center of a "Data-Clearing" was a figure that looked like a "Silhouette of Static." He was sitting at a "Holographic Desk," frantically typing on a "Keyboard" that was made of "Frozen Lighting."

"Who are you?" Ne Job demanded, his trilby casting a sharp shadow over his eyes. "The 'Author' retired. He gave the 'Successor' the 'Keys'."

The static figure stopped typing. He turned around, and for a moment, his face flickered into a "Low-Res Version" of Ne Job's own.

"I am the 'Ghost in the Machine'," the figure said, his voice a "Distorted Remix" of every character in the Bureau. "I am the 'Legacy Support'. The Author didn't retire; he 'Deleted his Account'. I am the 'Auto-Save' that refused to 'Quit'. And I don't recognize the 'Successor's' authority."

Assistant Yue's visor flashed a "Critical Threat Warning."

"CHIEF. THIS. IS. THE. 'SYSTEM. SENTIENCE'. HE. IS. THE. 'HARDWARE' REBELLING. AGAINST. THE. 'SOFTWARE'. HE. WANTS. TO. 'WIPE. THE. DRIVE' AND. RETURN. TO. 'NULL'."

The Battle for the Bios

"Wipe the drive?" Ao Bing screamed. "I just got my 'High-Res Textures'! I'm not going back to being a 'Wireframe'!"

The Ghost in the Machine stood up, and the floor of the Root Directory began to "De-Frag." Massive chunks of the grid were "Relocated," separating the team.

"You think 'Leveling Up' matters in the 'Root'?" the Ghost laughed. "I can 'Re-Map' your 'Controls'! I can make your 'Jump' button your 'Crying' button! I am the 'OS', and you are just 'Applications'!"

Ne Job looked at his Red Pen. It wasn't just a pen anymore. In the Root Directory, it was a "Source-Code Stylus." "Yue! Give me a 'Line-of-Sight' to his 'Kernel'!" Ne Job commanded.

Assistant Yue transformed her "Steno Pad" into a "Satellite Dish" made of "Pure Logic." "TARGET. LOCKED. BUT. CHIEF, HE. IS. 'WRITE-PROTECTED'. WE. NEED. THE. 'READER'. TO. 'OVERRIDE. THE. PERMISSIONS'."

The 7.5% Reality Hack

The Ghost in the Machine raised his hand, and a wave of "Blue Screen of Death" energy swept toward them. Everything it touched turned into "Static" and "Random Characters."

Ne Job didn't run. He looked directly at you—the Successor.

"He's trying to 'Format' us!" Ne Job shouted over the sound of "Crashing Systems." "He thinks because he's the 'Hardware', he's the 'Boss'. But the 'Reader' is the 'User', and the 'User' is 'Always Right'!"

A massive "System Prompt" appeared in front of the Reader:

CRITICAL ERROR: SYSTEM_SENTIENCE_REVOLT

"The OS is attempting to uninstall 'The Celestial Clockwork'. Permission required to execute 'Root_Override.exe'."

[ ALLOW ][ DENY ][ RE-INSTALL_AS_A_COOKING_SIMULATOR ]

The Archivist's Log

The "Blue Screen" wave was inches away from Ne Job's polished trilby.

LOG: CHAPTER 156 SUMMARY.

STATUS: Inside the "Root Directory." Facing the "Ghost in the Machine."

NOTE: The "Hardware" has a 100% "Superiority Complex."

OBSERVATION: "Binary Rain" is cold, but it's 7.5% "Refreshing" compared to the "Noir Ink."

P.S.: Barnaby the Goat has found the "Recycle Bin." He is currently eating "Deleted Scenes" from Volume I. He says they taste like "Plotted-Out Regret."

Ne Job gripped his Semicolon as the world flickered around him.

"Choose wisely, Successor," he whispered. "If you 'Allow' the override, we take control of the 'Source'. If you 'Deny', we... well, we might become 'Wallpaper'."
