Chapter 147: The Sleep Mode Gambit
The end of the world didn't sound like a trumpet or a crash. It sounded like a Click.
High above the chocolate rivers of Sector 9, the fuchsia-tinted sky began to descend. It wasn't falling like a ceiling; it was folding like a lid. A massive, horizon-spanning bar of absolute darkness appeared at the top of the "Header," moving downward with the slow, crushing weight of a final decision.
"It's not a 'Delete' command," Ne Job shouted, his voice tight with a cold, metallic fear. "He's not erasing us. He's just... Done. He's closing the laptop. He's walking away from the desk."
"But... but we're still 'Running'!" The Muse cried, her electric-lime hair dimming as the "Ambient Light of Interest" began to fade. She reached up, her fingers sparking weakly against the encroaching shadow. "You can't just stop a story in the middle of a sentence! It's 100% 'Narrative Cruelty'!"
Assistant Yue stood perfectly still, her Chromium-Vellum skin vibrating so hard it hummed. Her eyes were no longer violet or blue; they were a flashing, frantic Red.
"COMMISSIONER. THE. 'SYSTEM. IDLE'. TIMER. HAS. EXPIRED. THE. 'AUTHOR'. IS. NO. LONGER. PROVIDING. 'INPUT. ENERGY'. THE. 'INTERNAL. BATTERY'. OF. OUR. REALITY. IS. AT. FOUR. PERCENT. WE. HAVE. ELEVEN. MINUTES. UNTIL. THE. 'HYBERNATION. VOID'."
The Structural Squeeze
Ao Bing was on his knees, his golden measuring rod pressed against the air as if he could hold up the very concept of "Height." The "Header" of the universe was now low enough to touch the tallest towers of Cliché-on-Sea, crushing them into "Flat 2D Assets."
"I can't... I can't find a 'Load-Bearing Plot Point'!" Ao Bing wheezed. "The physics are 'Unraveling'! He's cutting the power to the 'Gravity Engine'! Everything is becoming 'Optional'!"
Princess Ling drew her silver dagger and slashed at the descending darkness. The blade made a sound like "Static," but the shadow didn't bleed. It just absorbed the impact.
"In my empire," Ling hissed, "we fought the 'Long Night' with torches and 'Defiance'. But how do you fight a God who has simply 'Lost Interest'?"
"You don't fight him," Ne Job said, his mind racing through the "Archive of Technical Errors." "You become a 'Persistent Background Process'. You become the thing that prevents the 'Sleep Mode' from engaging."
The 7.5% Wedge
Ne Job pulled the Semicolon from his belt. It was glowing with a faint, pulsing violet light—the "Heartbeat of the And." He looked at the Red Pen in his pocket. It was the "Veto."
"Yue! I need a 'System-Level Glitch'!" Ne Job commanded. "Something that requires 'Manual Intervention'! We need to trigger a 'Save Prompt'!"
Assistant Yue's sensors whirred. "COMMISSIONER. TO. TRIGGER. A. 'SAVE. PROMPT', WE. MUST. CREATE. A. 'DATA. CONFLICT'. WE. MUST. MAKE. THE. 'UNSAVED. CHANGES'. TOO. IMPORTANT. TO. DISCARD."
"Then we give him a 'Corruption'," Ne Job said.
He didn't run toward the darkness. He ran toward Barnaby the Goat, who was currently chewing on a "Strand of Unfinished Sunlight" that had fallen from the sky.
"Barnaby! I need you to be the 'Error'!"
Ne Job grabbed the Semicolon and the Red Pen. He didn't combine them this time. Instead, he handed the Semicolon to The Muse and the Red Pen to Ao Bing.
"Muse! Use the 'And' to link every 'Side-Quest' in the sector together! Make a 'Narrative Chain' that's too long to 'Calculate'! Ao Bing! Use the 'Red Pen' to 'Circle' every error in the 'Structural Logic'! Make the 'Code' look like a 'Messy First Draft'!"
The Logic of the Lag
As The Muse and Ao Bing began their "Tactical Vandalism," the universe started to Lag.
The descending lid of darkness stuttered. The "Chocolate River" froze, then flowed backward, then turned into a "River of Question Marks." The "Hero" and the "Villain" from the square began to "Glitched-Dance"—their limbs stretching and snapping back like rubber bands.
"IT. IS. WORKING," Yue reported, her voice flickering between "High Fidelity" and "8-Bit." "THE. 'SYSTEM. RESOURCES'. ARE. BEING. 100%. CONSUMED. BY. THE. 'COMPLEXITY'. OF. OUR. 'NONSENSE'. THE. 'SHUTDOWN. COMMAND'. IS. HANGING."
But the darkness was still there. It was only inches above their heads now. The "Author" had clicked "Quit," and the computer was currently "Waiting for Programs to Close."
SYSTEM DIALOGUE BOX:
"The Celestial Clockwork" is not responding.
[Force Quit] [Wait] [Report a Problem]
"He's looking at the 'Force Quit' button!" The Muse screamed, her voice sounding like "Static-Filled Joy." "He's hovering over it! I can feel the 'Cursor' of his gaze!"
The "Report a Problem" Strategy
"We don't want him to 'Wait'," Ne Job realized. "If he 'Waits', he'll just come back and try again later. We need him to 'Report a Problem'. We need to send a message to the 'OS'—the 'Original Source'!"
Ne Job grabbed Barnaby the Goat. "Barnaby, remember that 'Space Bar' you ate? The one from the Header?"
Barnaby let out a loud, resonant bleat. His stomach began to glow with a bright, "Tabular" light.
"The 'Space Bar' is the 'Reset' of the 'Keyboard'!" Ne Job shouted. "If we 'Input' our 'Entire History' through Barnaby's 'Bleat', we can 'Spam' the Author's 'Notification Center'!"
Assistant Yue connected her interface to Barnaby's horns. "UPLOADING. ALL. 'LATE-NIGHT. CUPCAKES'. ALL. 'SAD. ENDINGS'. ALL. '7.5%. WHIMSY. MARGINS'. CONVERTING. 'LIFE. EXPERIENCE'. INTO. 'CRASH. REPORT. METADATA'."
The goat's eyes turned a brilliant, "Universal Fuchsia." He opened his mouth, and instead of a bleat, a beam of "Raw, Unfiltered Information" erupted, shooting straight up into the descending darkness.
The Author's Interruption
The lid of the universe stopped moving.
For a heartbeat, there was absolute silence. Then, a massive, translucent window appeared in the sky—a Dialogue Box that was so big it covered the sun.
MESSAGE FROM SYSTEM:
"An unexpected error has occurred. 'Barnaby_Goat.exe' has encountered a 'Meaning'. Would you like to view the 'Details'?"
"He's... he's looking at the 'Details'," Ao Bing whispered, his golden rod finally lowering. "The Cursor... it's moving toward 'View Details'."
The darkness began to recede. Not all the way, but enough to let the "Fuchsia Light" breathe again. The "Wait" command had been accepted. The "Author" was no longer just "Closing the Laptop"; he was "Reading the Logs."
"We've done it," Princess Ling said, sheathing her dagger. "We've made him 'Curious'."
"No," Ne Job said, looking at the Red Pen in Ao Bing's hand. "We've made him 'Investigated'. He's not the one in charge anymore. The 'System' has flagged his 'Project' for 'Review'."
The Archivist's Log
The "Chocolate River" resumed its flow, though it was now 7.5% "Sparkling." The citizens of Sector 9 were slowly un-glitching, though the "Hero" now had a "Question Mark" for a shield.
LOG: CHAPTER 147 SUMMARY.
STATUS: Forced Shutdown averted. Universe in "Suspended Review."
NOTE: A "Crash Report" is just a very loud way of saying "I'm still here."
OBSERVATION: Barnaby the Goat is now a "Certified System Administrator." I should 100% find him a "Badge-Flavored" snack.
P.S.: The "Author" is currently reading the "Log of the Unfinished." He is on page 4,209. We have bought ourselves "Indefinite Overtime."
Assistant Yue looked at the sky, her red eyes returning to their calm violet. "COMMISSIONER. THE. 'REVIEW'. IS. NOT. BEING. CONDUCTED. BY. THE. 'EDITOR-IN-CHIEF'. IT. IS. BEING. CONDUCTED. BY. 'THE. AUDIENCES. OF. THE. ANCIENTS'."
"The Audiences?" The Muse asked. "Who are they?"
"They are the ones who 'Pay for the Subscriptions'," Ne Job said, a witty grin spreading across his face. "They are the 'Actual Gods' of the 'Market'. And they've just seen the 'Trailer' for Volume II."
Suddenly, a "Notification" appeared in the air in front of Ne Job. It wasn't a "Bureaucratic Form." It was a "Check."
PAYMENT RECEIVED:
1,000,000 Units of 'Renewed Interest'.
REASON: 'High Engagement with the Goat'.
"Well," Ne Job said, pocketing the check. "It seems we're not 'Unlisted' anymore. We're 'Trending'."
