Chapter 9 - Spy

Harrow carried the figure down the stairs and towards Midas, who stood and looked at Harrow.

"How did this scoundrel get into my house? Who do you think he works for?"

Harrow shrugged, and placed the figure down on a steel chair that some servants brought out, and Midas snapped his fingers. The chair melded around the mans wrists and ankles, as well as neck, acting as constraints. Additionally, a band of metal covered his eyes.

I was still in shock of realizing where I had seen Midas before. Had he been the one to kill Glen? Maybe, as they never figured out who had done it. My concern was still anchored on Midas, but after seeing Midas's power, I figured I'd have to bid my time before asking risky questions. For now, my attention was focused on the man before me, bound to the chair.

At Midas's command, a servant dumped a bucket of icy cold water over the bound man. With a sputter, he started to struggle.

"Where am I? Am I dead?"

"No. But you broke into my house. Why? Who do you work for?"

Midas looked through the items that were in the intruders pockets. A ball of yarn, some jerky, standard thieving kit and a letter.

"I ain't spilling nothing!"

Midas clicked his fingers and the man started to cough and choke.

"Okay, okay! I'll tell you. Just fix my lungs before. Their burning."

Midas clicked his fingers again and the man stopped coughing and let out a sigh of relief.

"My name is Rend, and I work for the God-force, with the Blessing of Coltop, tier 4. I was sent out the scene of the death of God-force member Sela to investigate, and the traces led here. I also received orders, while en route to here, if I find a sinner named Regis, I was to eliminate him, on orders of God-force Commander, Tali.

My blood rain could. My sister, ordering to kill me? Why? Does she not remember who I am, and believes me to be a different kid? Or is she aware that she ordered her brother's death?

Midas turned to look at me curiously.

"Why kill him? He is no threat."

"According to Commander Tali, his connections to his father could lead to ransom situations, and she wants to prevent that. But that is the official story. I did some snooping, and discovered that she ordered him dead because he has enough sins to harness the power of the Deadly Sins, like the Crime Lords, and we already have enough Crime Lords to keep track of."

Midas stroked his chin in deep thought. Then he turned to me.

"Who is your father?"

"Councilman Hatur."

"The advisor of the High Priestess? That Hatur?"

Harrow's voice was forceful and questioning.

"The one and only."

Midas looked at me confused. Even Rend was surprised.

"You're from the Meadows family. How on Judgment to you commit six hundred and seventy eight sins?"

"I don't know. I thought I was sinless, but I guess I wasn't. And now my sister has ordered my death, either out of malice, protection for my father, or because my existence is a disgrace, I haven't a clue."

"Your sister is Commander Tali?!"

Rend was shocked. How could a prestigious woman as Commander Tali be related to a sinner? No wonder she ordered the boy's death. Talk about a disgrace to the family.

Midas looked at me with a grin. He seemed to be calculating something behind those cunning eyes.

"So you're the son of Councilman Hatur and the brother to Commander Tali."

His grin widened.

"Are you going to blackmail them with my life?"

"Heavens, no. They want you dead. They won't care if you die or live. No, no, you're much more useful to me alive."

He snapped his fingers, turning Rend into a golden statue, and Harrow carried it to an open pedestal.

"Looks like meeting you was a good investment."
