Chapter 131: Visiting Orphanage
---2 May 1996 - Orphanage---
Steve woke up feeling refreshed and it was currently 7 am, he was a bit late usually he would wake up around 5.30 am and would help matron handle some work here.
But last night was very busy, he was being interrogated by an Auror, Ministry of magic and even Dumbledore himself. He answered patiently and try to act clueless and they all believed him.
In the past he also need to act because he lives in Orphanage, living with the other children you need to learn some skills and one of them is acting and thanks to that his acting skill is really flawless that he manage to even fool Dumbledore.
Today is Thursday and he need to be ready to go to school, though he didn't need to go to school but for the sake of removing suspicion on him, especially he believed that more wizards would come to visit him. So let's spend quality time on school.
When he opened the door, he smelled food, warm eggs, toast, butter and something sweet maybe milk. He dragged himself out of bed and trudged downstairs. The Matron was already seated at the table, sipping tea with a book half-open beside her.
"Good morning, Madam," Steve said, rubbing his eyes.
"Good morning, Steve," she replied with a gentle smile. "I did not wake you, you looked exhausted yesterday. Sit down, your breakfast is still warm."
"Thank you," he murmured, taking a seat.
Before this, Steve would always helped her cooking or do somework, it wasn't just him the other kids would also do the same. As an orphan that was the basic skill they need to grasp to survive in society without the shield of parents.
But Matron didn't wake him up because Steve is the most diligent and always wake up early, so if he woke up a bit late meaning that Steve was really tired.
Ten minutes passed quietly and everyone finished their breakfast, they took turn to wash their plate and also table.
The peace shattered with a sudden knock.
The Matron blinked. "Who could that be…? At this hour?"
Steve froze.
Not again, he had feeling it was someone from Ministry or Dumbledore himself.
The Matron opened the door.
Standing outside were four figures.
Albus Dumbledore, in deep blue robes embroidered with silver threads
Minerva McGonagall, stern and sharp as a hawk
Amelia Bones, now Minister of Magic, carrying the air of someone who had slept two hours at most
Kingsley Shacklebolt, Head of the DMLE, radiating silent authority
They filled the doorway with such presence that the Matron instinctively stepped back.
"Good morning," Dumbledore said warmly. "We hope this is not an inconvenience."
The Matron paled. "Who are you?"
It took Dumbledore 10 minutes to introduced themselves before Matron called Steve.
"Steve, there is a guest who come to meet you," said matron happily.
"Ok thank you madam," replied Steve with a smile.
"They are here," smiled matron.
"Ugh... ok," said Steve.
Dumbledore, McGonagall, Kingsley and Amelia are entering his room before matron leaving, Steve saw a bit of trace of magic and maybe they used some sort of muggle repellant.
"We are sorry to interrupt you Mr Roger," said Headmaster, this is Deputy Headmistress of Hogwarts her name is McGonagall.
"Yeah thank you headmaster Dumbledore, Deputy Headmistress McGonagall, Minister of Magic Amelia and Head of DMLE Kingsley Shacklebolt," said Steve.
Amelia Bones stepped forward, her monocle glinting sharply. "Steve Roger, we apologise for disturbing your morning. However, after yesterday's… incident, we have decisions to make and we feel it best to inform you immediately."
Kingsley added, "You should know we had an emergency meeting at sunrise because of you."
"Sorry?" Steve said, unsure if he meant it.
Kingsley actually smiled. "No need to apologise. You saved lives."
Dumbledore studied Steve with that unreadable, grandfather-like wisdom. "May we sit?" he asked.
"Yes, please," answered Steve.
Dumbledore conjured four stools so each of them can sit while Steven himself sit on his bed.
Their presence making the room feel far too cramped.
Amelia Bones did not waste time.
"Steve," she began, "your actions yesterday were extraordinary. A ten-year-old overpowering a trained Death Eater is so amazing and unheard of"
Steve shrugged lightly. "He underestimated me and furthermore I only redirected the magic"
Kingsley let out a low breath. "That is an understatement."
McGonagall cleared her throat. "We are also aware you performed wandless magic of a highly advanced nature."
Dumbledore leaned closer, eyes twinkling. "And all using imagination. Fascinating."
Steve offered a small, harmless smile. "It works."
Dumbledore exchanged a glance with Amelia. She gave a subtle nod.
Then Amelia faced Steve directly. Her voice softened.
"Steve Roger, as the current Minister of Magic, I must ensure your safety. After your actions yesterday, the wizarding world knows your name. You are already on the front page of every major newspaper."
Steve swallowed. "Seriously?"
Kingsley nodded. "Front page. Top headline."
Dumbledore's tone deepened. "There will be… attention. Curiosity. Admiration. And unfortunately, danger."
McGonagall added quietly, "Some may seek to exploit your abilities."
Then Amelia delivered the part Steve sensed was coming.
"Steve, we would like to offer you a place to stay. A safe place. A protected home with trained guardians."
The room fell silent.
Steve felt his heartbeat slow, then quicken again.
Dumbledore folded his hands gently. "You are remarkable, Steve so we wanted to help you."
McGonagall nodded firmly. "We believe with our training you could control your power more flawlessly."
Kingsley added, "And security. A Death Eater most likely would target you again, so staying here would not just endangering you but also the others muggles."
"We cannot risk it," Amelia finished.
He didn't answer yet.
Because he needed to think, carefully.
They were offering protection, but protection came with scrutiny. With expectations. With eyes watching every move he made.
But refusing them… That might bring even more problems.
Steve breathed in slowly while looking at the four of the most powerful people in magical Britain waited for his answer.
