Chapter 239 - Chapter 65: The City Gate is Breached

Actually, Wang Zhi had two reasons for refusing.

First, Jie Xi was still fighting hard. Jie Xi's help to him was undeniable, enough to warrant him risking his life to assist.

Second, under the current circumstances, running blindly was definitely not a good idea. Even coming from Tang Qilin, he did not approve of such a risky method.

At this moment, the outer wire netting had been fully deployed, encircling the entire Ready Room.

Wang Zhi quickly scanned the area. Excluding the Guard Team members, there were fewer than two hundred survivors here, which meant that more than half the people were still missing!

Bang! Bang! Bang! Gunshots erupted from all around the Ready Room. Most of the personnel had retreated here, accompanied by the relentless pursuit of countless Zombies.

It had to be said that these ordinary Zombies had become terrifying now. Even though the wire netting was secured by several wooden stakes, the Zombies threw themselves against it desperately. Their strong impact nearly caused the stakes to crack apart.

"Jia Liuli, Qin Sheng, watch your backs. Be careful of sneak attacks," Wang Zhi said to the few people after emptying a magazine.

Wang Zhi was somewhat worried, fearing someone might shoot them in the back. In this irrational Apocalypse, truly anything could happen.

After firing several magazines, the area outside the wire netting was piled high with Zombie Corpses. At this moment, Jie Xi also ran in from outside, leaping up and easily vaulting over the three-meter-high netting.

At this time, Jie Xi's armor was smeared with thick, viscous blood, showing numerous dents and scratches. The originally pure white mask on her face was now stained mostly black-red, which was unsettling for anyone who saw it.

Immediately following her, Wei Changzheng and the other two accompanying her also climbed over. The condition of the three was even more disheveled than Jie Xi's. One of them appeared injured, and they barely managed to crawl over the wire netting.

Wei Changzheng caught the injured guard and rushed straight toward the interior of the Ready Room.

After Wang Zhi and his team dealt with the first wave of Zombies that arrived, the speed at which the Zombies gathered was barely alleviated, giving everyone a brief moment to catch their breath.

In Dawn City at this time, whether in the residential areas of the Northern Sector or any corner, Zombies could be lurking!

What puzzled Wang Zhi was why that giant black shadow from outside had not entered the city until now? Had it only let out a roar?

Wang Zhi checked the time; it was only 9 PM. Their only hope now was for this thick fog to dissipate as soon as possible. They needed a gust of wind-east, west, north, or south-as long as it could blow the fog away.

"Damn it! Where did so many Zombies come from!" You Luo said through gritted teeth.

Not just You Luo, but almost everyone here had bloodshot eyes, looking at the hideous Zombies constantly throwing themselves against the wire netting, wishing they could drill several large holes into a single head.

After a while longer, the Zombies near the Ready Room became sparser. Wang Zhi and his team stopped shooting and returned inside to replenish their ammunition.

"Is it over?" Duan Qingtian murmured, looking into the distance.

Wang Zhi glanced back at Duan Qingtian, thinking his hopes were too optimistic.

Over? In Wang Zhi's view, this was merely a prelude!

Along the road, members of the Guard Team continuously moved boxes of ammunition out; this was their last line of defense. It was evident that Dawn City was truly staking everything on this fight.

In the battle so far tonight, Wang Zhi's team of ten alone had consumed over three thousand rounds of ammunition.

Everyone hurried along, too preoccupied to notice anyone else. The successive disasters had numbed everyone; many had come to terms with fate, no longer fearing death. this was their last sanctuary; if Dawn City were destroyed, what would be the point even if they managed to survive?

"No need to clean up, go reinforce outside!" Jie Xi told two guards who approached to wipe the bloodstains from her.

"City Lord, news from the City Lord's Palace says they can't hold out much longer!" a guard rushed over to report to Jie Xi.

Hearing that the City Lord's Palace was about to be breached, Jie Xi's pupils constricted, and she immediately stood up, saying, "A Zheng, come with me to the Palace! An Qing, A Feng, issue orders: everyone must hold this position to the death! Wait for my return!"

Immediately after, Jie Xi and A Zheng hurried past Wang Zhi's group of ten. Just as Wang Zhi was about to turn back to call out to Jie Xi, she grabbed him first.

"Xiao Zhi, I don't care what methods you use, but you must survive." Jie Xi gripped the collar of Wang Zhi's uniform, her eyes beneath the mask bloodshot.

"Okay... Don't worry..." Wang Zhi intended to say more, but Jie Xi didn't stay to listen. She turned and quickly followed Wei Changzheng out.

"What are they going off to do?" Old He asked doubtfully.

"I don't know, they must have something urgent to attend to," Duan Qingtian said, looking in the direction Jie Xi had gone.

"Let's not worry about that now, hurry up and reload," Wang Zhi said, moving to a crate of ammunition and beginning to load his weapon.

"Captain Wang, do you think Glasses Kid and the others might have already fled?" Fatty asked.

"They probably have. I just checked the surroundings, and I didn't see them," Wang Zhi replied.

'Damn it! That pretty boy! He ran faster than anyone when things got critical!"

"Everyone wants to run deep down. If they managed to get out, they're capable. Let's not criticize anyone," Wang Zhi stated.

Hearing Wang Zhi's words, everyone fell silent. That was right; with things having progressed to this point, they all harbored thoughts of escaping to some degree. The only reason no one brought it up was that the massive creature outside hadn't charged in yet. Attempting an escape now would inevitably be a terrible decision.

Boom! Just as everyone was silent, a tremendous crash suddenly erupted from outside!

Wang Zhi, in the middle of loading his ammunition, flinched, and a bullet slipped from the edge of the magazine onto the floor.

That loud noise, accompanied by the shaking of the ground, jolted everyone present. They had no idea what had happened far away.

"That sound came from the city gate!" Bai Ge pointed towards the city gate and said.

"The city gate..." Wang Zhi's face turned pale. That massive explosion made him suspect the city gate had been breached!

"The city gate? You mean that huge sound was because the city gate broke open?!" Fatty's eyes nearly popped out in shock.

"Hurry up! Stop filling them, let's go!" Wang Zhi quickly tucked the eight loaded magazines he had prepared into his waistband.

"It's over... I really don't want to die..." Hearing the city gate had fallen, Fatty became disheartened.

"Snap out of it! If you act like this, you won't even be able to run later!" Wang Zhi roared, hitting Fatty hard with his fist.

Wang Zhi and his ten men rushed out of the Ready Room. The lights on the rooftop illuminated the area around the city gate. Wang Zhi's vision was still obscured by thick fog, but countless low growls were already surging toward them from ahead, like a bugle call for a charge!

The first figure to appear in Wang Zhi's sight turned out to be Tang Qilin! Tang Qilin was covered in blood, limping towards them, looking remarkably like a Zombie.

"He's not a Zombie!! Don't shoot!!" Wang Zhi immediately shouted to stop them, as everyone's nerves were currently stretched to the limit, ready to fire at any moment.

At Wang Zhi's shout, everyone clearly saw Tang Qilin. Only one woman remained by his side; the other two were nowhere in sight!
