Sensing the shift in the surrounding atmosphere, everyone became uneasy.
Jie Xi looked back and said something into the radio, and the alarm sound on the city wall ceased.
"Let's go up quickly!" Wang Zhi shouted to the others, pulling out his Ejection Grappling Hook and firing it into the top edge of the city wall.
They had absolutely no extra time to waste now; he had to figure out exactly what had happened outside immediately.
Wang Zhi quickly scaled the city wall. By the light, he could vaguely make out a nearly ten-meter-tall, upright black shadow about fifty meters away, on the other end of the bridge. Its scarlet eyes flickered faintly in the dim night, and the overwhelming sense of pressure suddenly gave Wang Zhi the urge to flee.
The moment the black shadow appeared, the Zombies in the water seemed to receive an order and began crawling out of the water one after another. Instantly, countless Zombies and corpses surrounded the base of their city wall. This was only what they could see; the entire surrounding river was filled with Zombies!
"Ah!! Rat-a-tat-tat!" The guards beside them shouted frantically while firing wildly at the surging Zombies below the wall.
On both sides, three guards were taking turns reloading the ammunition, while another was pouring cold water onto the already glowing-red gun barrel. Even so, under the frenzied firing, the machine gun still exploded and jammed.
Jie Xi on the ground also received information from outside the city and quickly issued some command. The guards around Wang Zhi began to fully withdraw from the city wall.
"Are they giving up the defense?" Old He asked, startled, seeing the guards retreating.
"We've really messed up this time!" Duan Qingtian ground out through clenched teeth.
They knew very well what abandoning the defense of the city wall meant: it meant the easiest place to defend could no longer be held. Retreat was a last resort, but where could they retreat to? The only way out led through the city gate. The second route was to fall back to the Dawn Tower, but this second path was practically impossible, as the elevator leading to the Dawn Tower could only transport about a dozen people at a time; a full evacuation was simply not feasible.
"Stop the nonsense, let's get down quickly too!" Su Muying said, grabbing the Grappling Hook she used to ascend and sliding down.
After the guards on the city wall withdrew, the sound of gunfire noticeably lessened.
"Ah!! Help me! Help me!"
As soon as Wang Zhi landed, he saw a guard nearby being pounced on by a red-and-white Zombie. The guard was blocking the Zombie's mouth with his arm, but it was too late; the Zombie immediately bit off the guard's arm and continued tearing at every piece of flesh on his body.
Bang! Wang Zhi raised his gun and casually blew the Zombie's head off before continuing his escape toward the interior. After the city wall fell, a large number of Zombies appeared inside Dawn City. They hid in the dark mist, occasionally leaping out to launch a surprise attack.
Everyone fell into despair, scattering and fleeing, survival depending entirely on individual strength. Some small teams even believed that Dawn city was about to be destroyed and rushed toward the cafeteria, hoping to grab some food before fleeing far away. However, when they arrived, they found that all the shops had been sealed off, making a forced entry impossible.
"Captain Wang, where are we going? This is terrifying," Fatty said, looking at the scattered figures around him. He couldn't tell who was human and who was a monster anymore.
Wang Zhi's mind was also a mess. This sudden engagement had thrown everyone into disarray. Most importantly, this thick fog made it impossible to see the surroundings or the internal layout, rendering any combat plan, troop deployment, or ammunition allocation useless before the fight even began.
"Let's head to the Ready Room... all the firepower is concentrated there," Old He said at this moment.
"Right! The Ready Room! There are still many survivors there; we should hurry and group up," Fatty agreed.
Indeed, aside from the Ready Room, nowhere else held any immediate value.
"Okay... okay... the Ready Room," Wang Zhi echoed, though his attention wasn't really on the destination. Where they went no longer seemed important; what worried him was the massive black shadow outside.
"Attention all survivors! Proceed immediately to the Ready Room and prepare for combat. Repeat, all survivors...."
Instructions were issued again from the direction of the City Lord's Palace.
"We were right to go to the Ready Room!" Fatty exclaimed excitedly.
The ten people jogged over to the Ready Room, where the Guard Team was already setting up wire netting around the perimeter, providing mutual cover.
"Hurry up and get inside!" A guard shouted a greeting toward Wang Zhi and his group.
*Bang!* Just as the group entered, a Zombie lunged at the wire netting, nearly knocking over the guard who was pulling the mesh taut.
*Bang bang bang1* seeing that it was a Zombie, the surrounding guards each fired two shots immediately, blasting the creature against the wire netting.
After the netting was pulled a certain distance, two guards would use wooden stakes to prop it up, then secure the base of the stakes with iron nails.
Wang zhi did not linger outside; he ran directly into the interior of the Ready Room. At this moment, the survivors inside and outside the Ready Room were in complete chaos. Some were looking for opportunities to take advantage of the disorder, while others had already hidden inside, too frightened to come out. The Guard Team was temporarily unable to manage these survivors.
The person in charge of the Ready Room had already moved out supply crates of various models-take whatever equipment or ammunition you need!
"Captain! I just saw a team fire deliberately to shoot and kill others!" Qin Sheng looked somewhat panicked.
"Ignore it; hurry up and fill your magazines!" Wang Zhi said, placing a few more Biochemical Grenades into his pocket.
Under such chaotic circumstances, it was perfectly normal for some teams seeking revenge to do something extreme.
After Wang Zhi and his ten men had replenished their supplies, they rushed back outside again.
"Wang Zhi!"
Hearing someone call him, Wang Zhi turned around. It was Tang Qilin. Wang Zhi felt a little puzzled; as far as he recalled, this was the first time Tang Qilin had taken the initiative to approach him.
"What is it?" Wang Zhi was anxious; he wasn't sure how long this circle of wire netting could hold.
"How about we join forces and break out?" Tang Qilin suggested.
"What? You want to run? There are zombies everywhere outside; where could we possibly get to?" Wang Zhi sounded somewhat incredulous.
"Listen, we are no match for that zombie outside. To be honest, I certainly can't run out alone, but together, we absolutely can." As Tang Qilin spoke, he glanced at the few people behind Wang Zhi.
Wang Zhi knew clearly that the zombie Tang Qilin mentioned was the one they had seen earlier.
"Then what about this place if we run?" Wang Zhi asked.
"The surroundings are completely overrun by zombies now; this place can't be held anymore. If we don't run, do you intend to stay here and be buried with these fools?" Tang Qilin's expression began to fluctuate slightly.
"You are wrong! Without Dawn City, we are all going to die sooner or later! We can't leave!" Wang Zhi retorted.
Tang Qilin froze for a moment, saying, "Suit yourself!" With that, he quickly walked away.
