June 27, 2026, heavy fog.
Since the disinfection had just finished, the training ground was closed, so everyone remained inside the residence all day.
The heavy fog outside still hadn't cleared, and this abnormality once again frayed everyone's nerves; if someone now claimed the fog was poisonous, they would likely give it some credence.
"This is bad, Captain Wang! Something's happened again!"
Fatty suddenly rushed down from upstairs and said urgently.
Hearing Fatty shout that something had happened, Wang Zhi's heart dropped. "What happened now?"
"I heard gunshots, and quite a few of them."
"Gunshots? Where?"
"I can't see; there's fog around. Judging by the sound, it's probably near the city wall."
"Put on your gear, let's go check it out."
Wang Zhi felt a bit worried. The things happening recently were becoming increasingly bizarre; why was there fighting breaking out for no apparent reason?
"Hey, hey, Captain Wang! The fog is so thick, are you sure it's safe to go over there?" Fatty stopped Wang Zhi and asked.
"If there's trouble, can't we just run?" Wang Zhi replied.
Everyone quickly put on their combat suits and ran out of the residence. In the dense fog, Wang Zhi vaguely saw other teams also rushing toward the city gate.
The closer they got to the gate, the clearer the sound of gunfire became.
"Could it be that some Mutant Species is attacking the city again?" Old He asked doubtfully on the way.
"Those creatures really overestimate themselves; in my opinion, this is no different from sending themselves to their deaths," You Luo remarked.
Wang Zhi ran all the way to the base of the city wall. The twenty-meter-high wall was barely visible through the thick fog, but he could see the Guard Team members above constantly changing positions.
Wang Zhi leaped up, grabbed the rope ladder, and climbed onto the wall. Looking down on the other side, he saw the base of the wall was packed with red and white Zombies, and the Moat was also full of Zombies!
"Heavens, where did all these Zombies come from?" The dense mass of Zombies made Wang Zhi's scalp tingle.
Unsurprisingly, the entire perimeter was probably in this state. The members of the Guard Team had basically all been summoned to the city wall, with roughly one guard stationed every ten meters.
"What is going on?!" Wang Zhi shouted at a guard.
"I don't know..." The guard felt a bit steadier seeing someone come to join him, but his hands, which were changing the magazine, were still trembling.
"They are climbing up!" Duan Qingtian pointed down and shouted.
These reddish-white Zombies were using their sharp claws to barely crawl up the city wall. Although their speed was somewhat slow, and they might even fall off if they were not careful, the fact that they could climb on a smooth wall approaching ninety degrees was enough to shock Wang Zhi.
It should be known that this feat was impossible for these common Zombies before they turned into the reddish-white bald ones.
Bang! Bang! Bang! The guard fired three shots, barely managing to knock down the Zombie clinging halfway up the wall, failing to achieve a fatal headshot.
Watching the guard's marksmanship, Wang Zhi could only worry on the sidelines; they only had melee weapons and couldn't intervene at all.
Wang Zhi calculated that the current strength of the Guard Team was just over two hundred people. Even if one stood every ten meters, there would still be a gap of at least twenty degrees with no one stationed there!
"Where is your Captain?" Wang Zhi shouted loudly amidst the gunfire.
"They are directly above the city gate!" the guard replied, trembling.
"Let's go!"
"What on earth is going on? Why have all the Zombies run here?"
On the way, Fatty was on the verge of breaking down. He saw that the Zombies' speed was faster and more frantic than before. If he hadn't known they were once human, he would have suspected an alien species invasion.
"The scale of the Zombies this time is too large; relying only on these two hundred Guards might be risky," Old He said grimly.
"Seeing the marksmanship of those Guards, I even want to grab a gun and shoot for them myself!" Gray Wolf exclaimed urgently.
Wang Zhi ran along the city wall all the way to directly above the main gate. Several squad leaders were standing there, but Wei Changzheng was nowhere in sight.
"An Qing! Where is your Captain Wei?" Wang Zhi ran over and asked.
"He took people to the Northern Sector. He said there are even more Zombies in the north than in the south," An Qing replied, her expression looking somewhat strained.
"Damn it! Look, what a huge one!" Qin Sheng shouted, pointing at the bridge.
Wang Zhi turned his head to look. It was a Zombie about half again the size of the others, standing nearly three meters tall. It was currently jumping towards the city wall at extreme speed, trying to climb up.
"An Qing, lend me your gun!"
"Okay!"
Before An Qing could react, Wang Zhi had already taken the gun and thrown it to Gray Wolf.
Gray Wolf caught the rifle and grinned. Finally, he could have some real fun.
Who doesn't love free bullets?
Bang! Bang! Gray Wolf fired two shots in quick succession. Both bullets hit the large Zombie squarely in the head. It then fell heavily to the ground, crushing a smaller Zombie beneath it.
"Their marksmanship is quite accurate; I just lent it to them to use for a while," Wang Zhi explained to An Qing after the large Zombie was dealt with.
"Mm."
"Do you know where these Zombies are coming from?" Wang Zhi asked.
"I heard Captain Wei say that they seem to be coming because of the water in this Moat," An Qing stated solemnly.
Hearing An Qing say that, no wonder all these Zombies were densely packed soaking in the water. So, they didn't get enough rain and came here for a bath?
"How are your two hundred Guards supposed to defend this perimeter?" Wang Zhi asked doubtfully.
"I don't know. Captain Wei went to the rear; we are still waiting for news regarding the specific arrangements."
Just as An Qing finished speaking, an alarm sounded from the center of Dawn City.
An Qing's body suddenly trembled upon hearing the alarm. Wang Zhi observed her state with some confusion.
"What is it, An Qing?"
"The alarms in Dawn City do not sound easily. Unless... unless some major incident has occurred!" An Qing said, trembling. Wang Zhi might not fully grasp the gravity of this alarm, but An Qing, as a Squad Leader of the Guard Team, understood it perfectly.
Hearing An Qing's words, everyone felt a jolt; it seemed the Guard Team's firepower was failing to hold.
The alarm sounded for about a minute, then a strange voice emanated from the direction of the City Lord's Palace.
"Attention all Citizen survivors: Dawn City is entering Level Three Alert Status. Please fully arm yourselves and proceed to the Ready Room to await further instructions! Repeat, attention all Citizen survivors....."
Hearing the broadcast, the people exchanged glances. It was clear that Dawn City already knew its firepower was insufficient and needed to mobilize them, the survivors.
"Here, take your gun back." Gray Wolf stopped firing immediately upon hearing the broadcast and handed the weapon back to An Qing.
"Let's hurry to the Ready Room to assemble!" After speaking, Wang Zhi found a rope ladder, gripped both sides with his hands, and slid straight down.
