Chapter 4 - Blood curdling

"I am not the same!" Toya repeated mournfully.

The larger goblin chief stomped toward them. Jack barely rolled out of the way as the harsh whistle of the club being raised and driven back down alerted Jack. The ground exploded with a loud rumble from the impact of the club. Jack shielded his eyes.

He should kill the mimic, but he had the goblin chief to deal with. His comrades and friends were all in that thing's belly. No, this was his fault, he insisted the mimic come along. He knew that dungeons were hazardous, yet. He winced, squeezing his eyes shut for a moment.

The goblin chief swung wildly, roaring with spit flying out. Jack forced his eyes open. He stared at Toya. He could take the Mimic out now. He squeezed his eyes shut again."What Am I thinking?" They had a chief to worry about, and monsters rarely have a breakdown upon ingesting people.

The Goblin chief lost interest in Jack. He lumbered over to the mimic, swinging his club. The club carelessly hit the walls, causing bits of stone to fly off in chucks.

Toya continued looking at his hands. His screeching stopped, with the tears slowly drying. His lid opened. "Yuri." He knew that the other mimic just had to be her. That would make some sense. But would it?

The goblin chief roared, bringing its club down.

Toya tried to roll. One hand on the ground to push off. His right side tilted up. The club dented the mental brackets and smashed parts of his wooden side. "ugh."

Jack's brow furrowed. Here was his chance. He was in a position to escape. He slowly stood. His battle axe lay nearly forgotten. Is he really going to taint their memory with running away? No, he bent down, wincing as he heaved his axe up. He charged toward the goblin chief, screaming. His axe connected into the giant goblin's back.

The goblin chief roared, dropping his club. It spun around. The axe ripped out of Jack's hands.

Toya struggles to stand. He held his busted side for a moment. Thoughts circulating. He has to do something, or they both will die. Wait, didn't the voice in his head say level six mana? Fire, like that Sam guy. Wait, how does he cast it? Toya squeezed his eyes shut and concentrated. Fire, fire. A small flame appeared in his mind. He heard a sizzling, crackling, him to open his eyes and glance down. His wooden hand was on fire.

"Fire," his crotchety voice said. "Fire."

He waved his hand around and ranin circles. He was on fire. It worked. Toya slapped the goblin chief on the back.

Jack's jaw dropped. "Moron, you are supposed to throw it. Cast it. Not hold on to it."

"How do I not be on fire?" Toya asked.

I don't know, just think no fire." Jack shouted.

The goblin chief screamed after a few seconds. It swung its arms around, barely missing Toya.

The fire on his hand died as he dodged. He fell and slid back. Jack ripped his axe out quickly. Before the goblin chief could react, his axe blade dived straight into its neck.

Toya squeezed his eyes shut, and his lid jittered.

Jack yanked his axe out as the goblin chief fell to his knees, releasing a long groan at it fell forward.

Jack narrowed his eyes. "I should kill you! They were my friends!"

Toya tilted his body. "I am sorry. I did not mean to."

"Sorry, sorry is all you have to say."

As Jack spoke, the mimic with the pink bow peeked around the corner again.

Toya rocked forward a few times. The inside of his chest thudded and clanged. Finally, he rocked himself up. "Yuri!" He stretched out a hand and ran toward her. The mimic with the bow gasped and darted around the corner.

"Hey.…" Jack yelled after him. "I'm not finished." He sighed. His eyes slowly grew darker as his gaze unfocused for a moment. His head tilted down as a shaky hand covered his eyes.
