Chapter 26 - Chapter 25

"Kiera! Just stop this!"

"No, I won't—because I like you so much," she whispered, smiling.

The room was drenched in shadows, only the neon light cutting through the darkness. Slow music hummed, the air conditioner low and cold, but somehow the heat between us was suffocating. Then I felt it—soft fingers trailing across my chest. Her minty breath ghosted my face, and goosebumps ripped through me.

"You like my surprise?" she asked, sliding onto me.

"Kiera, I need to handle business. Get off me," I said, pushing her away gently.

Her eyes flashed hurt. "Do I disgust you?"

"No, Kiera… you don't understand."

"If you're not avoiding me," she said, pinning me to the wall, her eyes glowing like danger and desire tangled together, "then kiss me." Her hand pressed against my heart.

"You're crazy!"

I shoved her off and moved toward her nightstand, searching for the keys. Nothing.

"Looking for this?" she teased, crossing her legs—her thigh gleaming under the neon.

I swallowed hard. My body wanted one thing, but my soul screamed another. I had promised myself never to hurt Mrs. Maya's girls, never to mistake lust for love.

"Kiera, I need the keys," I said, voice sharp.

"Then come take them, sweetie," she winked.

"Kiera, don't make me do this. I don't hit women, but I'll break down this door if I must. Please. Just… give me the keys."

Her smile faltered. She dug the key out from between her breasts, her voice cracking. "I don't want you to hate me."

I snatched the keys, unlocked the door, and left her sobbing. Disgust ate at me—not for her, but for the weakness I felt in even wanting her. I needed air.

On the terrace, I spotted a small figure curled up on the lawn, hugging her knees.

"Eva? Are you crying?" I asked, sitting beside her.

She sniffled. "I'm missing my dad… it's been years since he left this world. I was his favorite. He'd take me across oceans, listen to my secrets, fix my broken heart with just a hug. Now he's gone. Forever." She sobbed harder.

"I'm here for you, Eva. Don't ever think I hate you. I don't… I love you instead."

The words slipped before I could catch them.

Her brown eyes widened. "Then why do you always shout at me when you're with Kiera? You hurt me every time."

"Because… she's in love with me. I didn't want to crush her."

"And what about me?" Her voice cracked. "Did you ever notice if I loved you? Or does my heart mean nothing compared to hers? Fine—choose her. You'll make a cute couple. I'll just find my own prince charming. No big deal!" She stood, anger and tears mixing.

I grabbed her wrist, pulling her back toward me. Our eyes locked, fire and storm colliding.

"Let her see us. I don't care anymore. Was that a confession? Eva, do you love me?"

Her lip trembled. "I know you'll reject me. Just let me cry in peace."

"What if I said I love you too? I've loved you from the moment I saw you—not on the train, but when I realized you were Mrs. Maya's daughter. Kiera distracted me, but my heart has always been yours. Only I can make you happy."

She touched my forehead. "Are you sick? This doesn't sound like you."

"I'm not joking. I love you, Eva."

"You don't."

"I do."

"Prove it."

I pulled her close, pinning her softly against the wall. My lips met hers—warm, trembling, tasting of salt and sorrow. Her first kiss. My first kiss. The world didn't fall silent; it exploded. My heart was a drum, my body a fire. I never wanted to pull away.

For that moment, heaven wasn't above. It was right here, pressed between us.
