Chapter 15 - Chapter 14

I went to Abam. He was staring at me with fear in his eyes.

"Relax," I whispered, patting his shoulder. "No snake's gonna attack you if you just sleep."

Within minutes, he drifted off, leaving me sweating and smelling like roasted plantain. I needed to freshen up.

I slipped into the bathroom and let the water run down my skin. Relief. I whistled my newly written song, the tune bouncing off the tiles. Afterward, towel around my waist, I returned to my room—only to freeze.

Eva was sitting on my bed in her pajamas, legs crossed like she owned the place.

"I think I'll be spending the night here," she announced, scanning the room like she was rating it on Airbnb.

"Huh? What?" I blinked.

"Uhmm!" She tilted her head, eyes daring me to argue.

"But—I wanna dress!"

"Then do it." Her lips curled in a smirk.

She was unbelievable. What was wrong with her? This was so unlike the Eva I knew. There was no way—absolutely no way—I was sleeping on the same bed as her. What if she…got pregnant or something? (Yeah, I know, my brain was ridiculous.)

"Fine. I'll just sleep in your room," I muttered, reaching for the door.

"You dare not!" she screamed, jumping up.

"You wouldn't want to wake Mom, would you?" she added, softer, eyes narrowing.

"Then where am I supposed to change?"

"The bathroom. Obviously." She turned away, and I swore I saw the faintest blush touch her cheeks. Or maybe I was hallucinating.

I grabbed my pajamas, changed in the bathroom, and returned to find Eva tucking Abam into the middle of the bed, making space on one side. She expected me to climb in.

Nope. Never. I'd never shared a bed with any girl who wasn't my sister—and I wasn't about to start today.

Instead, I pulled a big blanket and comforter from the wardrobe, spread them neatly on the granite-tiled floor, and lay down.

"Night," she cooed.

"Same," I replied, already drifting.

---

Morning light hit my face. I sat up, rubbing my eyes. The bed was empty. Eva and Abam were gone. Panic shot through me until I rushed downstairs and found them happily eating with Mrs. Maya.

"Morning, Mom!" I said, putting on my best guilty face. "I'm really sorry we came in late yesterday."

"No problem," she said easily. "Eva explained. I'm not angry. But I've been thinking—" She fixed us both with a look. "Instead of sitting idle during the day… you both need to get enrolled in school."

Eva groaned so loudly you'd think she'd been asked to scrub the entire house.

"Mom, really? Which stupid acts do you think I'd engage in? You love embarrassing me, don't you?" Her cheeks burned red, betraying her.

"You'll be going back to your former school," Mrs. Maya continued firmly. "Ade too. Any objections, my babies?"

"No, Mom," we chorused.

"Good. And Ade," she added, "that bike outside—is it yours?"

"Yeah. Got it yesterday."

Her face lit up. "Wow! My favorite color! How about we swap—you take my green one, I take your blue?" She laughed.

"No way, Mamma," I grinned.

She clutched her chest dramatically. "I'm hurt! Fine then. But hurry up—you'll drop King Abam at school before we see the principal today."

"Okay, Mamma."

Her eyes twinkled. "What's with the 'Mamma,' huh?"

"You don't like it?" I asked, teasing.

"Keep calling me that," she said with a smile before disappearing into her room.

I chuckled—until I noticed Eva's glare burning holes in me.

"Why do I feel like you're stealing my mom away from me, huh?" she muttered.

"Are you guys taking me to school or not?" Abam yelled, saving me.

"Alright, let's go!" I grabbed his hand.

"In your pajamas?" Abam gasped.

"Yeah, so?"

"You want my classmates to laugh at me?"

"…No," I sighed, lifting him onto the bike.

"Wait for me!" Eva shouted, dashing outside.

"What now?" I yelled back.

"I'm coming with you!"

"You're nuts. Not in your pajamas, Eva!"

"Deliver us, God!" Abam prayed dramatically.

"Idiot!" she shot back, but still climbed behind me.

"Vroom vroom! Let's go!" Abam screamed, arms in the air like a rollercoaster.

I started the engine and sped off, dropping him at school before heading back home with Eva.

---

Back at the house, Eva got ready while I washed the bike until it gleamed. Mrs. Maya's voice echoed from inside:

"Come on, guys, let's get going!"

"Seven minutes more!" I called, spraying deodorant like a perfume advert.

"I'm done!" Eva shouted, running down with her hair bouncing. Her eyes sparkled.

"I'll show you my friends—you'll love them!" she squeaked.

"No time for chit-chat," Mrs. Maya cut in, striding toward her black Lexus 300.

We piled in, and soon the car zoomed down the road.

---

The school loomed ahead, massive and impressive. The dark-blue-and-cream buildings stood like skyscrapers, each section neatly divided: one for nursery and primary kids, another for high schoolers, and another for labs, music, computer rooms, and sports.

The gate bore a proud signboard: "Welcome to Belviks Great School."

Inside the principal's office, three women sat waiting. Two were light-skinned, with sharp noses and perfect smiles; one had stormy grey eyes, the other deep black. The third woman, darker-skinned with a golden wig and eyes blue as the Mediterranean, radiated authority. Her teeth sparkled when she spoke.

She had to be the principal.

My chest tightened. This was it. My new beginning—or my new disaster.
