Chapter 77 - After the Storm

Morning sunlight finally touched the skyline of Helix City — not the cold, sterile light of survival, but something softer. The kind that followed storms.

For the first time in weeks, Sarah woke without the sound of notifications or ringing phones. No reporters outside, no chaos waiting at the door. Just silence. A fragile, healing kind of silence.

She sat up slowly, her hair messy, her thoughts clearer. On the nightstand lay the morning paper.

"Helix Triumphs: Sarah Darselle Redefines Crisis Leadership."

Her name was no longer whispered in scandal. It was spoken with respect.

Downstairs, Eric was already awake, standing by the balcony with a cup of coffee. He looked calmer, older maybe — but also lighter, as though a burden had finally been lifted.

"Good morning," Sarah said quietly.

He smiled. "You actually slept."

"Barely. My mind's still in meeting mode." She walked over, glancing at the city below. "It feels… surreal."

"It's peace," he said simply. "You've earned it."

She gave a faint, ironic laugh. "Peace doesn't last long in our world."

"Maybe not," he admitted. "But that's why we fight for it."

They stood there for a moment, wordless. Two people who had survived not just a company war, but a lifetime of personal wreckage.

Then Eric set his cup down. His tone shifted — calm but decisive.

"Sarah, there's something I've decided."

She turned, sensing the weight behind his words. "What is it?"

"I'm stepping down."

Her eyes widened. "What?"

He held her gaze, steady. "It's time. The board trusts you. The media trusts you. Helix needs a new face — not one haunted by old mistakes. You've proven you can carry this."

She shook her head. "Eric, you can't— Helix was your vision. Your legacy."

He smiled faintly. "Exactly. And the best legacy a leader can leave is knowing when to let go."

Sarah's voice trembled. "Don't do this because of me."

"I'm doing it because of us," he replied softly. "You've always been the one holding this world together. I was just too blind to see it."

She looked away, fighting emotion. "And what will you do?"

He shrugged lightly. "Disappear, maybe. For a while. Spend time with Clara. Help her rebuild trust — if she'll let me."

That name — Clara — pulled the air from Sarah's chest. "She hasn't called since the broadcast."

"She will," Eric said quietly. "She just needs time. Truth always takes longer to heal than lies."

---

That afternoon, the board convened one last time.

The atmosphere was different now — respectful, almost proud. Cameras were allowed this time. The announcement would be public.

Eric stood before the board, voice steady. "Effective immediately, I'm resigning as CEO of Helix Industries. My successor will be Ms. Sarah Darselle."

Gasps filled the room. The journalists scribbled furiously, cameras flashing.

Halberg nodded slowly. "The board accepts your resignation, Mr. Darson. And with full confidence, we confirm Ms. Darselle as the new Chief Executive Officer."

The room erupted in applause.

Sarah stood, hands trembling slightly. She didn't smile — not yet. Her gaze found Eric's across the table, and he nodded once, silently telling her: You've earned this.

She took a deep breath and approached the microphone.

"When I joined Helix," she began, "I was told that leadership was about perfection. But I've learned that it's about honesty — even when honesty costs you everything."

She paused, her eyes scanning the crowd. "We've all seen how truth can destroy. But today, we've seen how it can rebuild. Helix isn't just a company. It's proof that transparency and resilience can coexist."

Applause thundered through the room.

For the first time, Sarah smiled — genuinely, completely.

---

That evening, after the press had gone and the boardroom was empty, Sarah walked to the rooftop terrace where it all began months ago — the night Eric first returned.

He joined her quietly, hands in his pockets. The sunset painted the sky gold and violet.

"So," he said softly, "Madam CEO."

She turned, smiling faintly. "Don't start."

He chuckled. "It suits you."

Silence settled between them, heavy but peaceful.

"Are you really leaving?" she asked finally.

He nodded. "For now. I think Clara needs space — and so do we."

Sarah lowered her gaze. "You're right."

He stepped closer. "But this isn't goodbye, Sarah. It's just… the next chapter."

She looked at him — the man who had once been both her ruin and her redemption — and whispered, "Then make sure it's worth reading."

He smiled, eyes soft. "It always is, when you're in it."

---

When he left that night, Sarah stood alone on the terrace, wind brushing her hair, city lights glowing beneath her. For the first time, she didn't feel small beneath the skyline.

She felt whole.

The woman who once hid behind lies was now the face of a reborn empire.

And somewhere, out there in the same city, her daughter — their daughter — was watching.
