Chapter 422 - Escort Mission

We accepted the mission early in the morning.

It was simple. Escort a merchant to the neighboring city along the southern road. Nothing involving organized demons, nothing political, nothing strategic. Just ensure the caravan reached its destination intact.

After the recent events at the guild, that simplicity almost felt necessary.

We met the merchant near the main gate. He was already waiting beside a cart covered with thick canvas. Two horses, well-organized goods, everything apparently in order.

He observed me carefully before speaking.

"So you're Takumi."

"I am."

He nodded slowly.

"I was surprised when the guild confirmed that you would accept something so common."

"A mission is a mission," I replied.

He smiled slightly.

"I heard your group is already considered elite."

I didn't answer. I simply signaled for us to start moving.

Liriel took the lead a few meters ahead, attentive to the road. Rai'kanna walked along the left side, watching the nearby vegetation. Elara kept a strategic distance, ready to act. Vespera remained close to the cart, analyzing any change in the surroundings. Lyannis adjusted her position depending on what the terrain required.

We didn't need to discuss formation.

It simply happened.

The road was dry, the sky clear. The light wind carried the smell of warmed earth. It was an ordinary day.

The merchant held the reins calmly, but I noticed his eyes watching us frequently.

After a few minutes, he broke the silence.

"Do you always move like this? As if you already know where each one should be?"

"Yes," I replied.

"Training?"

"Trust."

He seemed to reflect on that.

We continued for almost an hour without interruption. The sound of the wheels against the uneven ground marked the rhythm of the journey.

It was Lyannis who first signaled movement in the forest to the right.

It wasn't a sudden gesture. Just a slight shift in posture.

I understood.

Rai'kanna had already subtly changed her angle of observation. Elara touched the bow on her back, but didn't draw it.

Three figures stepped out of the vegetation.

Bandits.

Simple equipment. Worn weapons. Nothing beyond what was expected for that region.

One of them raised a hand.

"Stop. Leave the goods and nobody gets hurt."

The merchant tensed, but he didn't panic.

I walked a few steps forward.

"Go back to the forest."

The man laughed.

"You think you can give orders here?"

I didn't answer immediately.

Vespera stepped forward two paces, releasing an almost imperceptible pressure of magical energy. The air around us seemed heavier.

Rai'kanna moved her blade just enough for the reflection of the sun to catch attention.

Elara raised her bow and aimed, but didn't fire.

Liriel remained still, yet firm.

There were no shouts.

There was no rush.

There was no combat.

The coordination spoke for itself.

The three men exchanged quick glances.

They understood.

Without further words, they retreated into the vegetation they had come from.

Silence again.

The merchant blinked a few times.

"You didn't even have to fight."

"It wasn't necessary," I replied.

We continued marching.

A few minutes later, he spoke again.

"I've seen groups get into fights for much less."

"Conflict is only useful when unavoidable."

He laughed quietly.

"Now I understand why people talk so much about you."

I didn't feel pride. Only confirmation that we were functioning as expected.

The road began to climb slightly, revealing a wider view of the surrounding countryside. Small green hills, a few scattered trees, nothing suggesting another threat.

The rest of the journey was calm.

Light conversations arose naturally.

Lyannis commented on the favorable climate for crops. Vespera analyzed the soil conditions. Rai'kanna observed that the region was strategic for trade. Elara kept her gaze attentive, but relaxed. Liriel simply walked with steady posture.

I listened.

It was in moments like that I realized how much our group had evolved.

It wasn't only strength.

It was stability.

We reached the city in the early afternoon.

The guards immediately recognized the guild seal on the cart and opened passage without questioning.

The merchant stopped in front of the main warehouse and stepped down.

He approached me.

"I've hired many escorts. None as silent as you."

"Silence avoids problems."

He opened the payment pouch and handed over the agreed amount.

Then he hesitated for a moment.

"If I need it again…"

"Request it at the guild," I replied.

He nodded.

"I will."

Before leaving, he added:

"It's not only the strength that impresses. It's the calm."

I watched as he organized the unloading of the goods.

Mission completed.

No injuries. No unnecessary strain. No excessive effort.

On the way back, we walked without hurry.

The afternoon light began to soften the landscape.

Rai'kanna spoke first.

"We're more synchronized."

"Yes," I replied.

Elara added.

"And we don't need to speak to act."

Vespera agreed.

"That's team maturity."

Liriel looked at me.

"You're calmer too."

Maybe I was.

The fame, the recognition, the invitations… none of it interfered when we were in the field.

There, everything was simple.

Protect. Advance. Complete.

When the capital appeared on the horizon, I felt something different.

It wasn't tension.

It was security.

Missions like that seemed small compared to what we had already faced. But these tasks were what kept our foundation solid.

If we could treat the simple with the same seriousness as the extraordinary, we would continue evolving without losing balance.

We entered through the city gates with the sun already descending.

Another mission completed.

No spectacle.

No unnecessary effort.

Just perfect coordination.

And as we walked back toward the guild, I realized something clearly.

We weren't becoming legendary only because of great battles.

We were becoming consistent.

And consistency is what sustains any name.

The day ended without noise.

But inside me, there was the certainty that we were ready for something greater.

And when that moment arrived, we would act the same way we did today.

With calm.
