Chapter 420 - The Weight Of Fame

The first thing I noticed when I pushed open the guild's door was the silence that arose for a second.

It wasn't complete silence. Conversations continued, mugs still struck the tables, papers were sorted behind the counter. But there was a pause. A recognition. As if my presence had created a small ripple in the atmosphere.

I wasn't alone.

Liriel walked at my side, serene posture, steady gaze. Vespera followed right behind, attentive as always. Rai'kanna kept a calm pace, but her eyes analyzed everything around us. Lyannis seemed curious about the movement. Elara remained silent, observing every detail with precision.

And people made way.

No one pushed. No one asked for space. They simply stepped aside a few inches, enough for us to cross the main hall without bumping into anyone.

Whispers began.

"It's him."

"The group that cleared that demonic zone."

"They say they faced a general…"

I kept walking as if I hadn't heard. But I had.

We had already returned to the routine of normal missions. Nothing grand in the past few days. Even so, our reputation seemed to have grown on its own.

A group of novices near the mission board stared at us openly. One of them held a form in his hands, clearly nervous. When our eyes met, he straightened his posture as if standing before an instructor.

That gave me a strange feeling.

It wasn't discomfort. It wasn't simple pride either.

It was responsibility.

We stopped at the main counter. The attendant who usually helped us looked up and, upon recognizing me, gave a different smile than usual.

"Good morning, Takumi."

She said my name naturally, but there was respect there. A tone that hadn't existed before.

"Good morning."

I handed over the documents from the last completed mission. She reviewed them quickly, stamped them, and separated the reward.

"Perfect execution once again. As expected."

As expected.

The phrase stayed in my head.

Before, we were a promising group. Then we were considered strong. Now… it seemed there was a constant expectation of excellence.

While we waited for the final registration, I noticed more looks. Not empty curiosity, but restrained admiration. A veteran adventurer gave a slight nod of greeting. I responded the same way.

That had never happened before.

We received the pouch with the reward. Vespera discreetly checked the amount. Liriel thanked her politely. Everything normal. Everything simple.

But the atmosphere was no longer the same.

As I turned, I met the gaze of a young adventurer standing near the entrance. She looked as if she wanted to say something. She hesitated for a few seconds, then approached.

"You're Takumi, right?"

"I am."

She took a deep breath.

"Thank you."

There was no long explanation. It wasn't necessary. I knew by her tone that it wasn't just personal gratitude. It was for what we represented.

She stepped away before I could say more than a nod.

We left the guild together.

Outside, the city was lit by the morning sun. Merchants arranged their stalls, guards patrolled the corners, the usual flow of the capital moved steadily. Even so, I noticed more greetings than before.

"Good work."

"We're counting on you."

Simple words.

I walked in silence for a few moments.

Liriel was the first to speak.

"You noticed."

It wasn't a question.

"I did."

Rai'kanna crossed her arms.

"We're being observed as an example now."

Lyannis smiled faintly.

"That's not bad."

"No." I agreed. "But it changes things."

Elara glanced at me from the side.

"You don't like it."

I thought before answering.

"It's not that. I just… don't want the group's name to become something distant. We didn't start to become symbols."

Vespera replied calmly.

"But we became one."

Just like that.

We kept walking until we reached the central square. A small group of children were playing with wooden swords. When they saw us, they stopped their game.

One boy pointed.

"It's him."

Another raised his improvised sword.

"I'm going to get strong like that."

I approached and crouched to their height.

"Train first. Strength without control only hurts."

The boy nodded with seriousness far beyond his age.

I stood up again.

As we walked away, I felt something different inside me. It wasn't vanity. It wasn't fear either.

It was awareness.

Every mission we accepted from now on would carry greater weight. Every decision could echo beyond our group. We were no longer just adventurers seeking to improve.

We had become a reference.

And that meant mistakes wouldn't be ours alone.

We stopped in front of the inn where we were staying temporarily. Before going in, I looked at each of them.

They didn't seem pressured. They didn't seem intimidated.

They were confident.

Maybe because, for them, nothing had truly changed.

We were still us.

The same formation. The same training routine. The same simple conversations at the end of the day.

Fame was outside.

In here, we were just a group that trusted one another.

I took a deep breath.

If the city wanted to see us as an example, then we would be a solid one. Not through exaggerated strength, but through consistency. Through discipline. Through the way we took care of each other.

I opened the inn's door.

"What are we going to do today?" Lyannis asked.

"Take a simple mission." I replied. "Keep going as always."

Because in the end, that was what sustained everything.

Not recognition.

Not whispers.

But the fact that we kept walking together, step by step, without hesitation.

As we climbed the stairs, I understood something clearly.

Fame was not a reward.

It was a weight.

And I was ready to carry it.

The new arc had begun, even if no one had announced it.

And this time, we weren't just strong.

We were a reference.
