Chapter 25 - Chapter II, page 11

The words hung in the air with the weight of ancient wisdom, and I felt them imprinted forever on my memory.

- I'll remember, sir. I'll go study right now.

" First, a shower," Lejont pulled a small dark blue leather pouch, decorated with silver patterns, from the folds of his cloak. "And take this."

I stared at the bag in bewilderment. "What is this?"

— You know about those roomy bags? Those magical things that hold more than you think?

My eyes widened. "Yes, but they're incredibly expensive! They say you could fit an entire castle in some of them!"

" This one isn't for locks, but it'll fit the contents of a decent-sized room. Consider it a gift for future exploits."

— Lejont de Mortel! I cannot accept such a gift...

" Loin," his voice softened, "I see your diligence. Every day you come here, working hard to hone your skills. Consider it an investment in the future of the kingdom. When you become the knight you dream of, this little thing will make your journey easier."

My heart was pounding so hard it felt like it was about to burst out of my chest. "If you believe... and it's for the defense of the kingdom... I will accept. Thank you, Sir Lejont!"

" By the way, there are books waiting for you inside. You'll read each one cover to cover. Got it?" His voice took on a steely edge.

" Yes sir!" I blurted out.

- Once again!

- Yes sir!

" That's better. Now go wash up. Maybe I'll see you again tomorrow." He turned to leave, but looked back. "And don't tell your mother about the gift yet. Deal?"

" I will cherish your gift even at the cost of my life!" I added passionately.

Lejont's face darkened. "That's what you said wrong. I almost expected that from your hothead." He held out a folded scrap of parchment. "Read it later. When you're alone and the emotions have calmed down. Try not just to read it, but to remember it."
