Stephanie's POV
The sound of the engine froze the breath in my lungs. My eyes snapped open. Next to me, Cane's body went rigid. Down below, the soft humming stopped. The only sound was that low, growing rumble, coming closer.
I was on my feet and down the ladder before I could think. My hand found the cold metal of the revolver on the table. Henry was already at the window, peering through a crack in the shutter. Josh stood behind him, a fireplace poker held like a bat.
Leo burst through the front door, his face pale. "It's alright! It's alright, it's just—"
The engine died outside. Car doors opened and closed.
A woman's voice, tight with fear, called out. "Leo? You in there?"
Leo shoved the door open wider. "In here, Mara. It's clear."
