Stephanie's POV
The dark yard felt too big, too empty. "Mabel!" I called again, my voice sharper now. "Jolina! Answer me!"
Nothing. Just the rustle of leaves in the wind. My heart was a frantic bird trapped in my ribs. Had they gotten lost? Had someone else found them first? The gun was still warm in my hand. I tightened my grip.
Behind me, I heard shuffling and grunts. Henry and Leo were half-carrying, half-dragging Cane out of the house. He was moving his feet better now, sheer willpower forcing his legs to work. His eyes met mine, and they asked the same terrible question.
"They're gone," I said, the words tasting like fear.
"We can't stay here," Leo said, breathing hard. He jerked his head toward a beat-up sedan parked a little way down the alley. "My car. We can use it."
Henry let out a harsh laugh. "Are you mad? It was your car they tracked! You led them right to our door!"
Leo shook his head, his face serious. "Forgor about that." He looked from Henry to me.
