Chapter 148 - Chapter 147: Deep Sea Incident

Mariana Trench.

A U.S. Army vessel was conducting routine patrol operations here.

Suddenly, the radar showed an obstruction ahead.

This was a common phenomenon, the Commander thought.

However, he suddenly remembered that the area in front of the submarine was an open sea, and there should be no obstructions.

And even large marine creatures would avoid submarines.

"What's going on?" he asked the sonar operator who was staring at the radar.

"Officer, the computer shows 15... no, 22 unknown objects, heading towards us!"

The Commander made a decisive decision and immediately called everyone: "Activate evasion mechanisms immediately!"

Everyone complied, and the Commander's only hope was that those unknown objects were just clumsy marine creatures, and not something else.

His hopes were dashed, but his intuition was accurate.

"Officer! They've changed course!"

It was the same operator who was intently watching the radar computer; he shouted:

"There are 37... no, now the screen shows 55 unknown objects; they're coming for us!"

"We must retaliate!" an Officer walked over and suggested to the Commander.

But the Commander just stared at him: "Retaliate against what? We don't even know what's chasing us!"

"High-temperature intrusion warning! Impact in 15 seconds, they... they're too fast!"

"Prepare for impact!" the Commander shouted, then said to the operator: "Try to figure out what they are."

An operator hesitated for a moment before speaking: "I think they..."

Commander: "What?"

"I think they... look like people!"

With that, the vessel suddenly shook violently, and the Commander's body was thrown by the violent tremor. After a while, he dizzily stood up, leaning against the bulkhead.

At this point, the submarine was in chaos.

"We've lost propulsion!"

He quickly grabbed the fixed internal phone next to him, "Engine room, report status!"

"The compartment is flooding, Officer!"

But after that, a scream suddenly rang out, and then silence.

"Engine room, engine room!" the Commander anxiously called out, but no one responded, and a chill rose in his heart.

But very quickly, screams began to echo throughout the entire vessel, one after another, those sounds even penetrating the command room's door.

Then, they saw the steel door dent inward, as if a monster outside was smashing it!

"Everyone! Armed counterattack!"

After giving the order, the Commander immediately moved into the communication room to call for help from headquarters.

"SOS! This is the USS California! Emergency situation! SOS!"

He only managed to utter these words before being submerged by the surging Water.

In the cold, dark Water, he saw the true form of the attackers—their pitch-Black armor, like Beasts in the Water.

They used the "claws" on their hands to wantonly plunder the lives of the crew.

The Commander desperately held his breath and swam outward, but these Black armored figures were too fast, almost like fish, instantly appearing behind him and piercing him.

From then on, the USS California was completely wiped out.

And those in Black armor, after clearing all the crew members, went to the armory.

With the cooperation of their companions, they unloaded all the torpedoes and took them all away.

More than ten minutes later, the vessel sank to the Undersea, along with nearly 70 crew members.

This incident was quickly learned by the relevant naval departments, who immediately sealed off the information.

That was the Mariana Trench, an area where the deepest point could reach 11 kilometers; they couldn't quietly find out the cause.

But if they investigated with great fanfare, it would deal an even greater blow to the United States' already unfavorable international reputation.

So, the Admiral, upon learning this news, quickly asked his Old friend for help—that person was General Lane.

"Sam, you must help me!"

The Admiral looked at General Lane with a serious expression.

"What can I do?"

Lane did not neglect him; he was able to remain in his current high position after being removed from military service largely thanks to the help of these Old friends, and he knew how to repay kindness.

The Admiral let out a sigh of relief and briefly explained the situation of the USS California to him.

"According to our intelligence analysts, this incident was definitely not caused by ordinary marine life, nor does it resemble the style of the other few countries; it's more like..."

"Supernatural power!" Lane completed his unfinished sentence.

He immediately said, "I understand what you mean. Coincidentally, I recently recruited a very capable subordinate. Let her lead a team to investigate this matter!"

A hint of joy appeared on the Admiral's face, but he quickly suppressed it.

He actually had a backup plan; if Lane's side couldn't handle it, he intended to try asking the Justice League for help.

They couldn't possibly discriminate against soldiers, could they?

After the Admiral left, Lane immediately contacted Amanda. He first briefly explained the incident, then straightforwardly said:

"I've already vouched for you to my Old friend. Can you quickly assemble a team in a short time to find out what happened there?"

Amanda quickly recalled everyone's names in her mind and finally confirmed that there was one "person" who could help her complete this task. So, she first apologized to General Lane:

"Sorry, General, I cannot gather an entire team to enter that sea area. Most of them do not possess the ability to withstand deep-sea pressure, but..."

General Lane's rising displeasure instantly cut off, almost throwing his back out. He said grumpily, "Speak quickly! Don't keep me in suspense!"

Amanda then continued, "However, I have a capable subordinate in Belle Reve Prison. He might have enough ability to enter that deep sea."

To be safe, Lane asked, "Can he be controlled?"

Amanda smiled. She elegantly crossed her legs and said indifferently, "He is completely under my control!"

General Lane heard the strong confidence in her words and chose to trust her, making a promise:

"Good! If this matter is handled well, Checkmate will be yours to lead from now on!"

Amanda was thrilled internally but outwardly agreed with an air of nonchalance.

The current head of Checkmate was just a politician who knew nothing about supernatural events, and Lane had wanted to replace him for a long time.

It's already Chapter 147, and he doesn't even have a name!

He had a good impression of Amanda. Although this woman was young and Black.

But she had ambition, drive, and more importantly, she was capable and shared the United States-first values, making her a natural ally of General Lane.

After hanging up the phone, Amanda quickly took a plane to Belle Reve Prison.

The "person" Amanda was looking for this time was named Nanaue, a descendant of Kamo, the Shark God from Hawaii, belonging to the Old Gods.

When Amanda was still young, she had investigated a local "human sacrifice" incident in Hawaii as an outsourced member of Checkmate. In this incident, she discovered the ancient Shark God Kamo.

However, Checkmate at that time did not have its own armed forces; they could only spend money to hire some mercenaries to try to eliminate Kamo.

Yet, even with weak faith, Kamo was still one of the Old Gods; he easily slaughtered this well-equipped mercenary force.

And Amanda, after realizing that Kamo could not be killed, made a bold decision.

She had heard from local indigenous priests that among all of Kamo's children, only the eldest son, Nanaue, would have the ability in the future to contend with his father for ownership of divine power.

So, while Kamo was slaughtering the mercenaries, she stole Nanaue, raised him in Belle Reve Prison, and occasionally visited him, feigning closeness.

Many years have passed now, and Nanaue trusts her completely.

She believed that merely asking him to go to the Mariana Trench to take a look, he wouldn't refuse.

The only problem was that Nanaue's intelligence wasn't very high, making him unable to complete some technically demanding tasks.

Of course, this was also a consequence of Amanda's intentional actions; a Beast only needed to be a good Beast, he didn't need a brain.

However, Nanaue had a bloodthirsty habit; as soon as he smelled even a hint of blood, he would immediately go berserk.

And the first time he went berserk, he ate a person, and from then on, he remembered that taste.

He would occasionally need to eat a person, otherwise, he would go berserk again.

At this time, Amanda would quietly find some death row inmates to feed him, strengthening Nanaue's dependence on her—this trick worked very well.

As soon as she entered Nanaue's solitary prison, she saw a huge Water tank, the body of which was made of high-strength anti-impact glass.

Although Nanaue could also live on land, he was never as comfortable in Water.

As soon as she entered the door, Nanaue saw her.

"Amanda!"

Nanaue's physique was very large, entirely resembling a humanoid shark, but his proportions looked somewhat short and stocky, and he had a rather dull expression.

Amanda's superficial efforts were very good. She first praised Nanaue's obedience, and then said:

"Nanaue, do you want to go out and play?"
