Davina's POV
"You can't go to the meeting."
The words escaped my lips before I could stop them.
Then I went completely still.
My own voice rang in my ears, harsh and commanding, squeezing my lungs tight. That wasn't how I'd wanted to say it.
Damn it. Not like that. Sure, I'd planned to speak up today. I'd woken up with that crushing resolve—that no matter how insane I sounded, I had to warn Louise Jenkin about my dream.
But not this way.
Not in some panicked outburst. Not sounding like I was giving orders instead of offering a warning.
My mouth went bone dry.
My hands turned clammy. My gaze flicked nervously toward Louise, who was now watching me with furrowed brows, clearly baffled.
My heart plummeted.
Should I take it back? Should I force a laugh, act like it was a slip of the tongue? I could come up with some excuse, something harmless.
Because the way Louise was studying me right now made my gut clench with dread.
"What do you mean I can't go to the meeting?"
