Davina's POV
I straightened in my chair, gripping my handbag tighter as the woman across from me stared with that same emotionless expression.
I could never deny my son, not ever!
"Yes Ma, I have a son. He's three years old."
The woman made a soft humming sound, revealing nothing.
Her expression remained unchanged. No smile, no acknowledgment, no disapproval.
Just that sound letting me know she'd registered my words.
"You said you grew up in Meridian?" she asked in an even tone.
I swallowed hard. A cold shiver ran down my spine.
Should I fabricate something? Should I alter my story? What if she decided to investigate? Anyone asking about the Hughes in Meridian would immediately get their answer.
I desperately wanted this position. I had to have it. There was no room in my life for someone digging into my history.
But I couldn't undo what I'd already revealed. So I nodded. "Yes Ma."
