Someone informed me the director requested my presence.
My stomach plummeted the instant those words hit my ears. I went completely still in the corridor.
At this point, I was constantly bracing for catastrophe. Every time I entered this building, every step through these halls, I prepared myself for the moment my carefully constructed world would collapse. Maybe today was finally that day.
After sharing that dream with Louise, I should have stopped immediately. Should have resigned right then, severed all connections, and disappeared before complications arose.
I understood this deep in my bones, yet I kept returning. Every single morning, I still appeared for work.
I refused to examine my motivations anymore.
Because somewhere inside, I already knew. I knew exactly why I stayed. But acknowledging it would expose me as both a hypocrite and a coward. I wasn't prepared to voice that truth, not even in my own mind.
