I woke up to the smell of leather and stale coffee.
My eyes fluttered open, adjusting to the dim light of the room. I wasn't in a hospital bed, thank god. I was lying on the plush velvet sofa in my executive office at AURORA. A heavy wool blanket, one I kept for late nights, was tucked securely around me.
"She's waking up," a hushed voice whispered. Qiao Mei.
"Finally," a deeper, more impatient voice replied. Su Jin.
I sat up, groaning as the room tilted slightly. My hand instinctively flew to my stomach, hovering protectively over the secret life growing there.
The twins. Were they okay? Had the stress of the construction site harmed them?
"Xiao Yi!" Qiao Mei was at my side instantly, her face pale with worry. She checked my forehead, her hands trembling. "Don't move too fast. You passed out at the site. Su Jin carried you back here."
I blinked, looking past her to where the new designer was leaning against my desk, looking uncharacteristically serious.
