The return from the hospital was quiet.
Lin Jun had insisted on driving me back to the manor, his expression grim with determination, clearly burdened by the secret I had forced him to keep.
Qiao Mei sat in the back, holding my hand, her eyes red from crying happy tears that I couldn't quite bring myself to shed.
When the car pulled up to the iron gates, the rain had stopped, leaving the world slick and glistening under the streetlights.
"Are you sure you don't want us to stay?" Qiao Mei asked, squeezing my hand as the car idled in the driveway. "I can sleep in the guest room. I don't like you being alone right now."
"I'm fine," I lied, my hand instinctively drifting to my lower stomach. Twins. The word echoed in my mind, terrifying and miraculous. "I just need to sleep. It's been... a long day."
"I will have a security detail stationed at the door," Lin Jun said, his eyes meeting mine in the rearview mirror. "And... I will keep my promise. For now."
