THE IRON FIST — Chapter 156: The Guardian of the Source
The creature moved.
Not like a machine.
Not like anything Silva had fought before.
It unfolded slowly from the shadows behind the Source Engine, its massive body rising like a nightmare waking from ancient sleep. The creature's skin looked like living metal, dark and reflective, layered with jagged ridges that pulsed faintly with crimson light.
Its eyes opened.
Two burning orbs.
The same color as the Source Engine.
The same color as the Iron Fist.
Silva felt it immediately.
Recognition.
The Iron Fist pulsed violently along his arm.
Lyra's voice trembled inside his mind.
"…Silva… this lifeform is generating the same energy signature as the Source Engine itself."
Silva exhaled slowly.
"So it's not just guarding the thing."
His eyes locked onto the creature.
"It's part of it."
The Architect's voice echoed through the chamber.
"Correct."
The ancient creature stepped forward.
The floor groaned under its weight.
It stood nearly twenty feet tall when fully upright. Its limbs were long and powerful, its claws curved like blades forged from black steel. But the most disturbing part was its chest.
Where a heart should have been—
There was a glowing fragment of the Source Engine.
The Architect continued calmly.
"This being is older than your species, Silva Reyes."
The creature growled, the sound vibrating through the chamber like distant thunder.
"It is the final guardian of the Source Engine."
Silva rolled his shoulders slowly.
"Let me guess."
He raised the Iron Fist.
"I'm not on the guest list."
The Architect answered simply.
"No. You are the key."
The guardian attacked.
There was no warning.
One moment it stood across the chamber.
The next—
It was already in front of Silva.
Its massive claw came down like a collapsing building.
Silva barely rolled aside before the strike landed.
The impact shattered the metal floor, sending a shockwave through the chamber.
Silva sprang to his feet.
"Okay," he muttered.
"That thing's fast."
The creature turned toward him again.
Its movements were disturbingly smooth for something so massive.
It wasn't clumsy.
It was precise.
Ancient.
Experienced.
Lyra spoke urgently.
"…Silva… its neural patterns indicate extremely high intelligence. This is not just a beast. It's a combat organism."
Silva smirked slightly.
"Good."
The Iron Fist ignited.
Crimson lightning surged across his arm as he launched forward.
His punch slammed into the creature's chest.
The explosion of energy lit the entire chamber.
The guardian slid backward a few feet.
But it didn't fall.
Instead—
It smiled.
Not with lips.
But with its eyes.
The creature struck again.
Silva blocked with the Iron Fist.
The collision felt like hitting a mountain.
Energy exploded between them.
Silva was thrown backward, crashing across the chamber floor.
He rolled to his feet again, breathing harder now.
"Yeah," he said.
"That one definitely hurt."
The guardian tilted its head slightly.
Studying him.
Then it spoke.
Its voice was deep and ancient.
Like stone grinding against stone.
"Bearer… of the Key."
Silva froze.
"You talk?"
The creature's glowing eyes narrowed.
"You are not the first to wield the weapon."
Silva's stomach tightened.
"What?"
Behind him, the Source Engine pulsed again.
The Architect's voice returned.
"Centuries ago, another host attempted to claim the power."
Silva frowned.
"And?"
The guardian answered.
"He died."
The creature attacked again.
This time Silva met it head-on.
The Iron Fist flashed forward.
Punch after punch slammed into the guardian's body.
Energy erupted with every strike.
The chamber filled with blinding crimson light.
The guardian responded with brutal force.
Its claws sliced through the air, barely missing Silva's head.
One strike caught his ribs.
Silva was thrown across the chamber again.
Pain exploded through his body.
Lyra's voice rose urgently.
"…Silva! Structural damage detected! Your body cannot endure much more of this level of impact!"
Silva wiped blood from his mouth.
"Good thing I'm stubborn."
He pushed himself back to his feet.
The Iron Fist pulsed again.
Stronger now.
Hungry.
The whispers returned.
We are one…
Complete the bond…
Take the power…
Silva gritted his teeth.
"Not yet."
The guardian stepped closer.
"You resist the weapon."
Silva raised the Iron Fist again.
"Yeah."
"Bad habit of mine."
The creature studied him silently.
Then it spoke again.
"If you do not complete the bond… you will die here."
Silva shrugged slightly.
"Probably."
The guardian's eyes burned brighter.
"Then prove your worth."
The battle exploded again.
Silva moved faster than before.
The Iron Fist guided his movements now, feeding him predictive flashes of the guardian's attacks.
Claw strike.
Dodge.
Tail sweep.
Block.
Counterpunch.
Energy thundered through the chamber as Silva hammered the creature again and again.
The guardian responded with equal fury.
Each of its strikes could shatter buildings.
Each of Silva's punches carried explosive force.
The chamber began to collapse around them.
Pillars shattered.
Ancient machines cracked apart.
The Source Engine pulsed violently in the center.
And above them—
The entire mothership trembled under the assault of human forces outside.
Inside the extraction ship—
Cruz stared at the tactical display.
"Status!"
One of the operators shouted back.
"The mothership's internal systems are going crazy! Something massive is happening inside!"
Cruz clenched her fists.
"Silva…"
Back in the chamber—
Silva launched himself upward, driving the Iron Fist directly into the guardian's chest.
The impact cracked the glowing fragment embedded inside the creature.
The guardian roared.
The entire chamber shook.
Lyra shouted inside his mind.
"…Silva! That fragment is connected to the Source Engine! If you destroy it—"
The Architect finished the sentence coldly.
"—the entire system will awaken."
Silva froze for a split second.
The guardian grabbed him instantly.
Its massive claws wrapped around his body.
Lifting him into the air.
The creature's glowing eyes stared directly into his.
"The choice is yours, bearer."
The Source Engine pulsed violently behind them.
The Iron Fist burned brighter than ever.
The whispers roared in Silva's mind now.
Complete the bond.
Become the weapon.
Awaken the Source.
Silva's vision blurred.
Power flooded his nerves.
The guardian tightened its grip.
"Will you remain human…"
The creature leaned closer.
"Or become something greater?"
Silva looked down at the Iron Fist.
The weapon glowed like a star.
Outside the mothership—
Missiles struck the hull again.
The war raged on.
But inside the chamber—
Everything came down to one decision.
Silva whispered quietly.
"Alright…"
The Iron Fist erupted with light.
"Let's see what happens."
