As the voice echoed across the city, a certain edgy adult who never grew up would smile.
"I guess I should probably tell you all how this is gonna work! Well, it's a good thing that the Tree of Knowledge is deciding to help out today!"
A new message would appear in front of every verifier in the city at that moment.
[New Mission: The Fame Game]
[Details: The Game developed by the Heavenly Sin Sect has been released. As the fall of your home occurs, what will you do? Will you simply sit and wait for others to claim your life for their own benefit? Or take control of the reins of your life and lay waste to those who dare defy you.]
William's eyes would perk up.
'The Heavenly Sin Sect? How interesting...Did they hijack the Translator machines in the city to broadcast this?'
He would continue reading.
[Rules: In the city of Shanghai, there exist several so-called 'Safe Areas', those being government establishments and CVA buildings. The goal of every participant in this game is to conquer as many areas as possible. Gaining control of a safe area, as well as doing other things, will reward the achiever with Victory Points. Capturing a Safe Area in the outermost parts will grant 10 Victory Points. In the center, 100 Victory Points. And in the innermost area, 1000 Victory Points. The VP will be rewarded at the end of each day. For every day you capture a safe area, you will be rewarded with the corresponding amount of VP.]
[Current Safe Areas:
Outer Area: 10
Middle Area: 4
Inner Area: 1]
[In this game, you either come out as a winner or die trying.]
[Current VP: 1]
After William finished reading the rules of the game, the loud voice would speak up once more.
"Now, of course, those are only the main goals for all you participants! You can also gain points via Murder. Killing someone with allow you to steal all of their Victory Points, as everyone starts with 1, which means the slaughter of those useless normies will be encouraged. Oh, the winner of the game is the first to reach 1000 VP! Gooooood luuuuuck!!!!!"
"Oh, and, for funsies, we'll add a leaderboard that updates every hour!"
William would sigh silently.
'This timing is a bit too coincidental, as well as Kaelus informing me about the layout of the city this morning...There are likely underlying schemes at play, or I'm just schizophrenic. Take your pick.'
He would then begin to smile, for unknown reasons.
His surroundings were silent, as if processing what had just happened. Then murmurs appeared, which devolved into a sea of confused cries for help almost instantaneously.
While everyone else was busy fighting and killing innocent civilians, William would pull out his phone to access the maps app.
Amidst the screams of war and bloodshed, the internet connection remained flawless. Must be that 6G tech coming to use.
Since William went to the middle section of the city to register as a verifier officially(Because it's way better infrastructure-wise...) and that took ages, he decided to rely on technology this time!
"AAAHHHHHH!!!"
-Some random woman being torn to shreds.
'Distance to nearest CVA building: 10km'
Seeing this, William knew immediately to kick things into high gear and start sprinting.
As someone
'I gotta get there fast!'
'Directions to Nearest CVA Building: Take a sharp right turn in 50 meters.'
"Xiao Wei, keep an eye out for any attackers, got it?"
-Mreow!
A cat-shaped shadow would appear on William's shoulder, eyes would sprout all over them as [Seek] was Activated.
William would thank Xiao Wei by patting them before taking a hard right and continuing his dash.
Along the way, he saw the carnage brought by the Fame Game. The price of the decision he had made. In the short minute that had passed by, the city's infrastructure had already nearly collapsed. With dead bodies painting the city in a crimson coating of red.
And what did he feel?
I think you know the answer to that question.
[Mission: The Sin of Life]
[Progress: 1.25%]
William would stare at the screen in front of him. He understood what the numbers symbol
---------------------------------------------------------------------
No.
It's...not right. Haah...I hate when this happens! It just doesnt't feel right. What's the right decision? Which path should this story go down...Arghh, theres an limitless amount of possibilities, so why can't I find one I like! Stupid Stupid Brain, Think dammit!
Hmm, what if I did this? Altered the scenario, changed the details, swap locations...
Oh...oh that's clever. Very Clever. I see the line now. Mate in 75.
Hey if this goes well maybe my parents won't keep worrying about how I'm doin. My other options were becoming a robotics engineer or probably just ending up as a social media influencer, but looking at social media these days is tantamount to torture. Sheesh, it's just filled with ragebait and bots fueling a bigger machine that's the algorithm. I guess Bo Burnham might've been onto something all those years ago...
Sigh...I have so much schoolwork and revision to do...Guess I'll just procrastinate both writing and studying for the longest time while worrying constantly!
I'm glad I steered away from those trash sites nowadays. But writing a webnovel is about as hard as I thought it would be, that is, as easy as climbing Mount freaking Everest in a day. Which is probably why my rate of uploading chapters is as fast as Technoblade's upload schedule. Rest in Peace.
Anywaays, this little message isn't going to be heard by that author kiddo, so don't worry about the implications.
Now, I need to get back to work on this, so don't mind my brief yap session dear readers, this story's only getting started. Though you'll have to bear with my upload schedule ;)
Here goes something, I don't know if it'll work or not, but one thing is for sure. This part of the chapter I decided on a whim will change this story. Whether it goes good or bad, I don't care enough to think about.
Let's see.....
