So she rode, the rhythmic clop of hooves her only companion besides Jordan's silent presence.
A full day passed before the familiar silhouette of the castle rose against the horizon. But the welcome she received was not one of triumph. At the gate, two guards crossed their spears, blocking her path.
"What is this? Stand aside. Have you forgotten who your queen is?" Sloane's voice was sharp, her patience worn thin by travel.
One of the guards shifted uncomfortably, unable to meet her gaze.
"Lu... Luna... the Alpha King... he ordered us to deny you entry upon your return."
"What nonsense are you spouting?" Her voice was dangerously low, a tremor of fury running through it. "You must have misheard him! Fabian would never... Open this gate now!"
"We can't, Luna!"
With a shared, furious glance, Sloane and Jordan swung down from their horses. The air crackled with their combined rage.
