Even though she was exhausted, Xiao Zhi couldn't sleep well. Her body was still aching, and the cold was biting at her skin. When she finally woke up, she realized the fire had gone out.
Only a few glowing woods were left in the dark. In the dim light, Ruhan looked like a marble statue. He was pale and dangerously still. Panic hit Xiao Zhi instantly, and she crawled to his side, her hands shaking as she reached for his wrist.
His pulse was faint and weak, much worse than it had been hours ago. Even though she had used her silk dress to wrap the wound, dark blood had leaked through. The white fabric was now stained a deep, heavy red.
"Ruhan?" she whispered, her voice trembling. But he didn't move.
She grabbed his shoulders and began to shake him. "Ruhan! Wake up!"
At first, there was no response. She shook him harder, her voice rising to a frantic pitch. "Ruhan, don't you dare! Open your eyes!"
