I was lying awake in bed next to Asher, staring at the ceiling like I did every night now. Soon, he fell asleep. Then I slipped out of bed, he barely stirred.
I walked towards my studio, and took out my burner phone expecting a message. There was an email from an unfamiliar account. The subject of the email made my heart stop.
"RE: Your portfolio inquiry - Professor Wei."
Professor Wei was my jewellery design professor from school. I'd emailed her two days ago from an anonymous account to ask if she knew of any opportunities, any way for me to build a real portfolio, a real reputation, without using my married name.
I opened the message.
Rysa (or should I say 'R. Lin' as you signed your email?), your portfolio from school still impresses me. You had raw talent then. I can only imagine what you've developed since.
