Chapter 42 - [42] Call of the night (1)

Kyle led Himiko to the parking lot where his car was and took out his keys. The lights flashed as he clicked the button, a corresponding clicking sound reaching their ears.

It was about 8:00 pm so the darkness made the car seem like a furious shadow, with little flashes of light highlighting its elaborate curves.

Himiko raised a brow, her smile deepening, "I didn't know you were rich."

Kyle shrugged. "I'm not rich, I'm just very good at digging gold," he said with a wink.

It was technically not him but the previous Kyle. He must have been very good at extorting his sister to have gotten something this expensive.

'Good going previous me!'

After they both got into the car, Kyle pulled the vehicle into the cool evening traffic, gliding smoothly through the sea of cars.

Instead of air conditioning, the windows were open, allowing the chilly wind that ruffled both their hair and clothes.

They had only driven for about five minutes when Kyle noticed that Himiko was rather calm, just like she had been earlier in the morning.

"A penny for your thoughts?"

Himiko snapped back to reality and smiled nervously. "It's nothing important."

Whatever it was, it was clear that she was not too eager to tell him.

"Whatever it is, you can tell me about it whenever you feel like it."

She nodded, smiling faintly when she glanced out of the window only to immediately shriek back.

Vroom!!

A guy suddenly sped past them, his car nearly brushing against Kyle's door as he made a risky maneuver just to show off his speed.

And to make matters worse, as he neared Kyle, he stuck out his middle finger just before he stepped down on the gas, sending dust their way.

Himiko stuck out her head from the window and yelled at him, while Kyle chuckled softly.

A Mercedes Benz C63 AMG.

'So the rivalry continues even in this world huh?'

Back on Earth, there would be forums that went on endlessly, fans of both brands cussing themselves out and bringing statistics from God knows where to prove their point.

Kyle was not a loyalist to any brand, but—

"Himiko, fasten your seat belt." He chuckled darkly.

Himiko hurriedly sat back and clicked her seatbelt in place, her eyes wide with excitement.

"Are we going to race him—"

Her question was answered the moment Kyle clicked on the sport setting of his car.

His hands tightened on the steering wheel. He started up the music, allowing the violent popping sounds to invade his ears.

And then he stepped on the gas—

The car pounced as though it was about to fly, jerking forward as it lunged like a feral beast.

The guttural sound of the engine mixed with the whir of the tires and the sound of wind cutting into the vehicles.

His lights bared on, bathing everything in front of him in a bright white light, and then he smiled.

Vwosssh!

Himiko was tossed deeper into her seat, the car moving so fast that the buildings around them began to blur.

Kyle spun the wheel to the side, curving around a large truck that had been barring his path, then spun it once more to stabilize himself.

The Mercedes had a head start so it was still far ahead, but with Kyle's vampire senses he could see it as clear as day.

"Yes! We're going to catch up!" Himiko squealed, practically kicking her feet in joy as they accelerated.

Normally, other girls might have been afraid considering how fast they were going, but Kyle was sure that if they could have gone even faster, she would have happily obliged.

They were just a few seconds away from reaching him when two trucks began pulling close to each other, narrowing the path to a mere diagonal gap.

And the Mercedes driver was just in front of them!

Himiko frantically waved her hand at them from within the car. "Ugh, get out of the way!"

Kyle, on the other hand, had other plans. He let out a deep breath, his arms loosening on the wheel.

He had a plan, a very dangerous one at that.

'If this fails, I'm probably fast enough to get us both out before a crash, right?'

The truth was that he had only once attempted this maneuver in a game…

But right now, everything was just right.

From the serenity of the night to the flashing lights within his car to the girl beside him.

Everything was perfect.

His adrenaline was working on overdrive, pumping his head with hopes and dreams.

It made the impossible seem within reach and the forbidden, a mere delicacy to be sampled.

Kyle smiled darkly.

"Fuck it."

That was when Himiko knew there was trouble. Kyle had a look on his face that she had never seen, one that made her question his next move.

As the red lights from the trucks flashed in his eyes, bathing everything in his favorite color, Kyle did something that no sane man would do.

He accelerated.

The car jerked, responding to his every instruction, the engine roaring in delight as he charged right toward the trucks.

The space was so narrow that he could not go through it straight, and so he drifted.

One leg on the brake, the other on the throttle—

A sharp click, a flick of the steering wheel, and then he grounded the pedal.

Steel almost touched steel. Red lights were glaring, horns were blaring, curses were flying, but Kyle was smiling.

And then the car turned horizontally, gliding right past the narrow passage.

Himiko screamed. Excitement or fear? Kyle had no clue, his eyes... they were locked on the road, a malicious glint in them.

And yet he was not done.

He swerved the wheel once more, his car rotating to the point that he was now facing the opposite side of the road—driving backward and cutting right in front of the Merc.

Everything happened in the space of five seconds…

The Mercedes driver's mouth hung open, veins popping on his forehead as Kyle smiled right at him.

Kyle blinked his lights, honking to mock the man while Himiko stuck her hand out of the window, flicking her middle finger.

She probably had no idea what it meant, which only made it funnier.

"Hehehe, get that pile of scrap metal back to the junkyard! You snail!" Himiko screamed, her laughter filling the car a second later.

The driver angrily banged his steering wheel, and then his car accidentally swerved, spinning out of control.

He managed to steady his car in time, but not without the truck brushing the backside of his car, pulling off his bumper.

"Ouch…"

Kyle immediately turned back to his normal driving position and sped away, listening to Himiko's victorious laughter, the poppy music, and the sound of her heart—

As it raced along with the car.
