Chapter 6 - Intruder

It was a missing object, and the one missing is the bed itself. However, because the bed itself was missing, the items should have been on the ground in the process, but it ended up staying afloat in the air without any support, making it an anomaly itself.

Number 2 scanned the bed with her Anomaly Scanner, and after terminating the main cause of the anomaly, the bed returned to normal. They just blinked, and the bed seemed to have materialized again, fixing the main problem.

"Alright, that should have taken care of the missing object in the bedroom. Let's go and check what the next anomaly is," Number 3 said as he made sure the bedroom had no more anomalies left that would be out of place.

Hubert also glanced at his watch, and the next anomaly to fix is already tracked.

"Intruder. Basement."

"Intruder? Wait, someone else got inside beside us?" Number 2 frowned.

Number 3 shook his head and pulled out the Plasma Gun. "No. I bet it was another of those things I killed earlier. Get ready."

Hubert also pulls out his Plasma Gun. They don't know what is currently hiding in the basement, and if it is called Intruder, there is a big chance the anomaly itself might be another monster or worse.

They looked around the house to find the basement entrance, and soon, they found the entrance on the side of the living room. It was one of the doors present there.

But even though they are still upstairs, they can already hear something that is currently banging downstairs. It's causing noise in intervals, and it does not sound like something they want to encounter. The three are glued in front of the doorway, refusing to go down first.

"Hey, you should go down, you know how to shoot a gun, right? Shouldn't you be the one who will volunteer to shoot in case things get gnarly?" Number 2 urges Number 3 about it, but the latter refuses to budge and shakes his head.

"I don't want to lose my head just because of this fatal mistake. I don't want to die just yet!"

Number 2 shook her head further. "No way I will volunteer to also risk my neck down there as well! Someone has to do it!"

That's when the two of them turned to look at Hubert, who was also hesitating to go down. The two stare at him with a curious look and do not say anything at all, just something that seems to be giving them the look that they are saying, "You know now what to do."

Despite the hesitation on Hubert's part, he wanted to have this job done as soon as possible, so even though he is more likely to risk his life here, he doesn't want to stay there forever and wait for someone to volunteer. There is a high chance that the two would just push the role to him further. So instead of arguing with them, he decided not to bother at all and go with the flow this time around.

He pulled out his plasma gun and aimed it down the stairwell as he slowly descended with sweat running down his forehead. The sound of the banging is getting louder and louder as he descends the stairs. Thankfully, the other two also went down with him, following closely behind. Not too far, but not too near either. Enough distance so they can bolt out if something happens.

Hubert steeled himself with his finger ready to pull the trigger anytime something dangerous appears before him. Even though the stairs aren't that long, it felt like an eternity descending them, and soon, Hubert finally found the one that they were looking for.

Before them is a man who doesn't have a single piece of clothing on his body. He is fat, and he looks like a bum who became crazy and is now running around town naked. Although that wasn't the scary part. The problem with this man is his head...or should we say, "Heads".

In his neck grows two large heads that seem to look like it was inflated by a balloon. Veins are already showing on the skin, and with how big they have become, one might think that they are going to burst anytime. Now, these two heads are alternating in banging their heads on the wall, very loudly. It is so loud to the point that it echoes in the basement.

Hubert pulls out his scanner while still keeping his gun pointed over at the intruder. He started scanning it, and when the scan was done, the intruder himself turned around, revealing his hideous, bloody appearance.

Now, that would have been the end of this nightmare fuel intruder that keeps on banging their heads, but no, that wasn't the end, as the moment he finished scanning, the intruder turned to look at them, their heads were already bashed beyond recognition. Not only that, their features have been mixed in with the flesh in their faces, and one can even see some sort of liquid that came from the forehead that looks a bit whitish. As soon as the intruder turned around with the hideous faces facing all three of them, it smiled and opened its big mouth.

"AAAAHHHH! SHOOT IT! SHOOT IT!" Number 2 started screaming, and the gun she was aiming at the intruder blasted multiple plasma blasts in quick succession that both Number 3 and Hubert had to duck down and avoid the plasma bullets from hitting them.

But instead of those bullets hitting the main target intruder and injuring it, the intruder moves so quickly to the point that it seems to phase in and out of existence just by moving. It dodges most of the fired ammunition like nothing, and before Number 2 can react and run back upstairs, the intruder seems to have teleported behind Hubert and Number 3 and focused on Number 2. Number 2 screams and runs away while she continues to fire her gun at the intruder, nimbly dodging each shot.

As Number 2 continues to shoot, the intruder jumps into the air and lunges itself so quickly that before everyone can react, Number 2's screams are muffled and soon die out as the intruder swallows and eats Number 2. Blood gushed out of the intruder's mouth, destroying the chances that Number 2 survived.

Number 3 drags Hubert out of the basement, but the intruder gives chase.

"F*ck, f*ck f*ck!" Number 3 cursed as he fired his plasma gun at the intruder, who continued to be so nimble in moving. Hubert also shoots his plasma gun, but their shots are basically worthless as not a single one of the bullets even lands on the intruder.

Hubert is panicking since it is now behind him, aimed at the intruder to shoot it with his plasma gun, but soon realizes that he wasn't even using the plasma gun in the first place, but the anomaly scanner. He had scanned it earlier, and while Number 2 shot it, the intruder seemed to glow a little bit, which seemed to be enough to learn that the intruder was indeed an anomaly.

Before he could switch his gear to the gun, he pulled the trigger of the scanner, which was meant for restoring the anomaly to normal and executing the anomaly of it. The intruder was already lunging at them, and Hubert closed his eyes in fear for his life...but the intruder did not replicate what happened to number 2. Instead, it stopped and its body started to shake. Bones seem to be creaking and are destroying all of the flesh and skeletal remains of the intruder. Soon, the intruder that was fervently chasing them seems to dissolve into a pool of pale liquid before disappearing completely.

Although confused, that's when Hubert realized something. Based on the report, the first anomaly was related to the shadowy monster that killed Number 1. It was labeled as "Hostile Entity" in the watch and as a target for attacks. However, that changed with the current anomaly, which was labeled as an intruder. Now, what was the difference between the two? Is that also the reason why it was so capable of dodging their attacks and surviving? Hubert doesn't know. But one thing is for sure now, they are one step away from finishing the job.

"I don't know what you did, man. But that saved us from suffering the same fate as Number 2."

Just as the two were not yet done catching up their breath, the watch pings once more, notifying them of the final anomaly they needed to find and restore...and they have already lost two members. Hubert is already cursing the job he has entered and is grumbling under his breath about it. He just hoped that the pay for this job is worth it because he plans to resign immediately after this task. The two looked at the final anomaly and frowned over the next problem. It might not be as bad as the previous ones, but the implications alone are scary enough.
