I didn't use the main entrance. It was too crowded, and the police had already stopped me. Instead, I slipped in through a side door, whatever it was called.
The moment I stepped onto the first floor, my nose crinkled. I pinched it, trying to block the sharp, bitter sting of smoke. It wasn't as bad here as outside, but you could still smell the fire, feel the heat seeping through the walls.
From what I'd heard, the flames had started on the third floor, spreading to the fourth.
I hit the stairs, taking them two at a time. The elevator wasn't working, and even if it were, I wouldn't risk getting trapped in it now.
The second floor was worse. Thick with smoke, hotter, and foggy. I could barely see or breathe. Everything stung.
I wasn't sure how I made it to the third floor, just that I did. Eyes watering, lungs on fire, I staggered forward through the haze, calling out her name.
"Harper!"
"If you can hear my voice, follow it!" I shouted.
