The room they were given inside the base was designed for recovery, not war.
It had controlled temperature and windows that showed the horizon but not the perimeter. Everything about it suggested safety. That alone made both of them distrust it.
Theo sat at the small table with a mug he had forgotten to drink from.
Danielle leaned against the window and randomly folded her arms, watching the light shift outside like it might carry answers if she stared long enough.
Neither of them wanted to speak at first.
This was not fear or grief. It was a calculation settling into place.
"We cannot hit them loudly," Danielle bit her lower lip. Her voice was calm in a way that meant she had already gone several steps ahead. "That is what they expect."
Theo nodded once. "Zack thrives on confrontation. Elias hides behind justification. You cannot corner either of them with force."
