Chapter 7 - Unchained Bolt and the Confession

Kael let out another euphoric laugh, this time tinged with exhaustion and adrenaline.

"We did it, Lilith! Victory!"

Lilith got up from the floor, feeling a chill run through her body. She had reached Level 30, and the fatigue that had overwhelmed her in the final moments of the fight completely dissolved. She felt as if all her energy had been reset—a total vigor that only the Level 30 fatigue reset could grant.

"The Level 30 Fatigue Reset... Just in time. I'm renewed," Lilith muttered, smiling with a genuine happiness that contrasted with her usual seriousness.

Her gaze turned to the drops. She saw the Pure Mana Heart and the Hardened Scales, valuable resources, but she focused on a rolled-up scroll: the Recipe: Greater Healing Potion.

"Look at this, Kael!" she said, taking the scroll. "A Greater Healing Potion recipe. This is an excellent drop. If we get an alchemist for the guild, we can supply our own high-grade potions. It's a great omen."

Kael nodded, the euphoria replaced by a sense of practical achievement.

At that moment, a sphere of bright white light appeared in the center of the chamber, right where the head of the Viscous Gator had fallen. It was the signal from the Dungeon Control Core, the key point for claiming the concession.

"That ball of light is the Dungeon Core, right?" Kael asked.

"Yes. The manifestation of control," Lilith confirmed. "Go ahead, Guild Master. The honor is yours."

Kael stepped aside. "Not me. This is your guild and your effort. You claim the concession, Lilith."

Lilith looked at him for a moment, with an unreadable expression, before smiling in approval. She approached the sphere and placed the palm of her hand on it. The light intensified, and a projected control panel appeared above it.

[Control of Portal B-12: Viscous Wilds]

[Owner: Ash Guild]

[Access Difficulty: Blocked for 10 days]

The sphere of light began to spin and pulse.

"It's ours now," Lilith said, ambition shining in her violet eyes. "And it's time for us to get out of here."

The sphere of light transformed, opening into an intense violet portal: the exit.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Upon crossing the portal, Kael Ardent and Lilith appeared in a small temporary room guarded by three Hunter Association agents, who were there to secure the perimeter in case of failure.

The agent in charge, a burly man in a gray uniform, immediately approached.

"Mistress Lilith Velmont! Congratulations! The Ash Guild has completed the Portal B-12 sweep. It's an outstanding achievement for such a young guild. The permanent concession has been granted."

Lilith held up a hand to stop him. "Don't be mistaken. The victory is not just mine. It belongs to my guild."

The agent quickly glanced at Kael, who looked like an exhausted rookie, and forced a smile. "Of course, naturally. In that case, the concession becomes the property of the Ash Guild. The access portal will be sealed shortly to secure the perimeter. It's time for us to withdraw."

"Perfect," Kael said, gathering the backpacks with all the drops. Now that they were outside, the relief of victory mixed with a pang of guilt. "Should we go sell everything? Is there a hunter station nearby?"

Lilith dusted the mud off her armor with a telekinetic gesture.

"Don't worry about the sale. Since they are high-grade parts and cores, we get much more by selling them directly to specialized merchants, not at public stations. I'll handle the distribution to maximize profits. Rather... Don't you have something more important to do? It's been almost two days since you entered the portal."

Panic seized Kael. "Right! My family! I have to go home."

"I'll drive you," Lilith offered, pointing to a sleek black vehicle parked nearby.

"No. Thank you, but no," Kael said, shaking his head. "It would be... weird if I show up at home in that car. I don't want them to see me."

Lilith let out a small laugh. "That makes sense. Go home, Lawbreaker. Tomorrow, same time, same place. We'll discuss your payment and the next steps. You'll need a few days off anyway."

Kael nodded, said goodbye in a hurry, and hailed the first taxi he could find.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kael arrived at his front door in the dead of night. He got out of the taxi with his heart pounding. The fear of Aria's reaction weighed on him more than any combat. He rang the doorbell, a knot forming in his stomach, thinking about the lie he was about to tell.

The door opened, and Aria was there, her face pale and her eyes red from lack of sleep and worry. Seeing him, she didn't scream or cry; she just stood motionless, looking him up and down: dirty, with a torn uniform and a smell that wasn't from an office, but from dirt, blood, and electricity.

"Kael..." her voice was barely a whisper.

Behind her, their children, Liam and Sophie, appeared in their pajamas.

"Dad!" Liam ran and hugged his leg.

"Where were you?" Sophie asked, her tone more scared than scolding.

Kael hugged them both with all his might. The relief of seeing them was immense. "I'm here. I'm sorry. I had to do a very long extra job and couldn't use the phone."

Aria spoke, her voice firmer, with a mix of reproach and relief. "'Extra job'? Two days without calling. Kael, they told me the phone was out of service. What kind of job is that?"

"I know. It's a high-security place... The protocols are very strict and don't allow communication," Kael lied, feeling the bitter taste of deceit. For now, it was all he could say.

They left him alone for the time being. Kael ate dinner and then went to shower, the hot water washing away the mud and dried blood, but not the guilt.

Later, in the living room, Kael sat with Aria. He looked at her; the sadness on her face was evident.

"Do you have something to tell me, Kael?" she asked, looking down at her hands.

Kael took a breath. He summoned his courage, knowing the full truth was too much for now, but he had to make her a promise.

"Yes, I do," he said, taking her hands. "Listen to me closely. I know this worries you, but soon... very soon, you will know everything. No one will ever make fun of me or our children again. I promise you."

Aria looked up at him. There was a confidence and strength in his eyes that she hadn't seen in years, since before his disgrace.

"You have me worried," she said softly.

"Don't be," he replied, with a conviction he felt deep in his bones. "Believe it or not, I am becoming very strong. I'm close to achieving my goals. I feel it."

They talked more, calming her fears. Finally, they went to sleep, Kael's secret weighing between them like a shadow.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next morning, Kael said goodbye to his family.

As he left, his children asked Aria why their father had been so strange lately.

"Dad is very busy with a new project that will change our lives," Aria said, giving a calm excuse. "Now, hurry up, or you'll be late for school."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kael arrived at the agreed time, and Lilith greeted him with a radiant smile.

"Good news, Kael."

Lilith showed him a bank transfer panel on her tablet. She had liquidated the lower-grade materials and had advanced a deal for the boss cores.

"The sale of the low-grade materials, plus a portion of the future sale of the boss's scales and core, results in this first transfer for your share," Lilith said.

Kael looked at the amount on the screen. It was $45,000 USD. He was in shock. It was the equivalent of almost two years of his salary as a laborer.

"That's... that's a lot!" Kael stammered, feeling dizzy from the number of zeros.

"I know," Lilith said, shrugging. "It's the price for achieving a Portal Sweep in 48 hours with only two people. It's impossible for a new guild, and the anomaly is you. Don't worry, the money is coming. I've already hired collection and mining teams, and they're heading to the portal today. The sale of the armor we found was also generous. Little by little, we are moving into the black."

Kael, feeling immense gratitude, thanked her.

"You have a few days off, Kael. For now, Portal B-12 has its difficulty blocked for ten days. I'm looking for more portals, but I don't want the Ash Guild to overspend."

Lilith turned serious. "What I did do was submit a formal application to the Association. I requested a reserved time slot for you in a Public Dungeon Level 30 to 70. I'll let you know if I hear anything. That's all for today."

Kael absorbed the information, nodding his head. "That's more than I could have hoped for. Thank you, Lilith."

She sighed, closing her tablet. Her gaze became stricter.

"And by the way, I'm still having no luck finding new recruits. It seems no one wants to take a risk with a newly founded guild. Also," she added, frowning and pointing at his clothes, "you need to dress better. High-level hunters will underestimate you if they always see you in your regular civilian clothes. At least a good outfit for when we have guild meetings or meetings with the Association. Your 'laborer' attire doesn't cut it."

Kael looked down at his t-shirt and jeans, which no longer fit with the money in his account. He gave a dry laugh. "You're absolutely right. Yesterday's clothes ended up in rags. My 'laborer' outfit is not up to the task. I need to find something better, even if it's light armor. I'll look for something decent today."

"Exactly. Appearance is part of strength in this world," Lilith said, slightly more relaxed. "I'm glad you understand. I'll leave these reports in your hands then."

"Alright. While the portal is blocked and you handle the logistics, I'll go see what I can buy to help me become stronger," Kael replied, and he said goodbye.

With the money in his account and the promise of becoming stronger, Kael headed to the hunter market.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kael arrived at the Hunter's Market, an area that contrasted with the city's modern architecture. The market was located in an abandoned industrial district, a labyrinth of warehouses and makeshift stalls. The air vibrated with the cacophony of shouting vendors, the clinking of steel, and the smell of exotic spices and roasted meat.

He was surprised by the crowd and the variety of items for sale, from shiny bones and hardened scales to customized weapons and bubbling elixirs. This was the epicenter of the risk economy.

His gaze stopped at a stall selling armor. He saw a steel plate armor that he liked. It was simple, robust, and gleamed with a metallic polish.

"Excuse me, how much is this plate armor?" he asked the vendor.

"Ah, the Solid Steel Plate, special for tanks Level 25 to 40. The quality and forged steel cost $40,000 USD," she replied.

Kael blinked. He opened his mouth in genuine surprise. "$40,000?! Damn, seriously!"

"Yes, young man. A Hunter's life is expensive, but it's worth the price in protection."

"You're right," Kael muttered, feeling the sting of reality and disappointment. "I understand why they earn so much; the expenses are just as exponential. Better keep looking."

He continued on his way and came across a Skill Grimoire shop. The place was a small cave of treasures, with glass shelves filled with ancient books and silk-wrapped scrolls. Kael stopped in front of the Movement Grimoires shelf.

He read a couple of titles. Shadow Step (a short teleportation skill) cost $150,000 USD. Quick Flight (for wind mages) cost $80,000 USD. The prices are insane, Kael thought. If I buy one of these, I'll be broke. Not even half of what I earned would be enough for the best one.

Rifling through the cheap movement skills shelf, Kael found a grimoire with a simple, almost worthless design.

[Skill: Spark Leap]

[Description: Allows the user to transform into a small electric spark to travel a maximum distance of 10 meters. Only usable as a defensive or rescue movement.]

Kael looked at the price: $25,000 USD. Half of his remaining money. The idea of testing whether his power could transform other elements was tempting. The need for a movement skill, even such a limited one, was crucial for survival. It's a huge risk, half my capital. If it doesn't work, I'll have wasted half of my first earnings. But if my Lineage rewrites this limitation, the value will be infinite. I have to risk it.

"Ma'am, I'll take this one," Kael said to the vendor.

The woman, an elderly lady with thick glasses, looked at him skeptically. "Young man, Spark Leap is not a very useful skill. People buy it as a lifeline, but it consumes mana and only moves ten meters. It's a very weak skill for a Hunter at your level. Are you sure you don't want something more potent?"

"Very sure. I have a good feeling," Kael replied, with a smile that didn't reach his eyes, handing over the money.

Kael paid and left the store with the grimoire in hand.

He walked to a food stall and ordered something quick. While eating, he opened the grimoire. A system panel appeared only for him:

[Do you wish to learn the skill "Spark Leap"?]

Kael thought: "Yes." Immediately, a surge of knowledge flooded his brain, and the way mana should be channeled to execute the skill became instinctive.

Then, the system reacted.

[Warning! The "Lawbreaker" Lineage has intervened with the skill "Spark Leap".]

[Skill Analysis: Capability limited by a physical restriction imposed by the System.]

[Lawbreaker Lineage: **Restriction nullified**. Skill rewritten.]

[Skill: **Unchained Bolt**]

[Description: Allows the user to transform into a bolt of pure electricity and travel without distance restriction. Unchained Bolt ignores the laws of inertia and friction. Distance is limited only by the user's concentration. Mana Cost: None (Intervened by Lineage).]

Kael choked on the last bite. He had to cover his mouth with his hand to keep from shouting in sheer euphoria. It worked! It really worked! His mind was a storm of satisfaction. The system had not only removed the 10-meter limitation, but it had also eliminated the mana cost. It had turned it into instant, unlimited, and free teleportation. I am unstoppable! I am the only one who can do this. This Lineage is the Law. The adrenaline surged through him again; it was the definitive confirmation that his Lineage was superior. He jumped up, finished his food quickly, and went out into the street, overwhelmed by the need to test it.

As he walked, he passed a blacksmith shop. He saw a young blacksmith being questioned by an angry customer over a failed order.

"I told you the armor was impossible! That no one could use that!" the young man apologized.

His master, an older, gruff man, scolded him. "I pulled you out of disgrace, boy! Your family rejected you, and yet you can't do anything right."

Kael paused for a moment, observing the young man's humiliation. The scene reminded him of his own past misery, of being judged as useless. That was me a week ago, Kael thought with fleeting bitterness. He frowned, but shook his head. I am no longer that man. My focus must be on my family and my strength. He continued on his way, eager to test his new skill.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He reached the corner of his street and got out of the taxi. Before entering his house, Kael concentrated. He thought about the front door.

He didn't speak the skill. He just thought about the direction.

Immediately, Kael turned into a bolt of lightning that crossed the street in an instant. It wasn't a blur; it was a streak of pure light. The landing was a bit rough: he staggered and almost fell, but he was at his door. It was dozens of meters away, in less than a second!

"Holy moly!" Kael exclaimed quietly, feeling dizzy from the speed. The impact upon stopping was like hitting a wall, though without injury. He was impressed, euphoric, and slightly sick. He took a deep breath, straightened up, and forced his face into a calm expression. I have to control the braking, but this is incredible. Aria mustn't notice anything. He ran a hand through his hair, took a couple of deep breaths to calm the trembling of his hands, and turned the doorknob.

He entered the house. His children, Liam and Sophie, were in the living room. Aria had not yet arrived.

"Dad!" Liam and Sophie said upon seeing him, coming closer.

Kael walked over to the sofa and sat down. He wanted to have a serious talk with them before Aria arrived.

"Come here, kids. Sit down, I want to ask you something important," Kael said, patting the seat next to him.

Liam snuggled up beside him. "What is it, Dad?"

"Are they still bothering you at school?" Kael asked, in a soft tone.

Liam, the youngest, shook his head. "Not entirely, but... lately people talk to us."

"They ask us if you were the one who saved people from the Beasts incident," Sophie explained, with a proud glint in her eyes.

"And we're making friends. Thank you, Dad. No one makes fun of us now," Liam added.

Kael's heart melted. His effort was already having an effect.

"I promise things will get much better very soon," Kael said, hugging them tightly.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next day was normal until the afternoon, when Lilith called him.

"Kael, good news. The Association approved the application. You have a reserved access to the Public Portal: Pyra's Red Lands," Lilith said.

Kael felt a thrill of excitement.

"Your reservation is for tomorrow, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A maximum of four hours. Don't disappoint me. I paid a lot for this reservation; it's your chance to level up without risk. And remember: everything you kill is your own loot."

"Understood. I'll be there," Kael said, feeling the adrenaline. "I won't fail you. It's exactly what I needed."

Kael hung up, feeling ecstatic. The first time, in the low-level portal, he had to be careful not to expose his power to other hunters who might appear randomly. Now, with a reserved time slot, he had the battlefield to himself. I can use my infinite mana at maximum power without worrying about witnesses!

The next day, Kael took a taxi to the coordinates Lilith had sent him.

He arrived at an imposing portal entrance guarded by sentries. People were murmuring.

"Who is that guy? He looks like a rookie..." a hunter said.

Kael checked in. The guard read the panel.

"Kael Ardent. Level 27. Temporary reserve access, Pyra Portal," he said loudly.

The murmurs turned into laughs and scornful whispers.

"A Level 27 in a Level 30 to 70 Portal... Maybe he's a rich old man who wants to die with dignity," scoffed a hunter.

Kael felt the humiliation, but he suppressed it.

—Laugh now. In four hours, we'll see who has the last word —Kael thought with cold determination.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He entered the portal.

The air was warm and dry. Kael found himself in a world of reddish rock and petrified trees. The sky was a dirty orange, and the ground was strewn with volcanic rocks. This was the Scorched World of Pyra.

Kael pulled out his chains, took a deep breath, and channeled his mana. Lightning erupted around him. The chains were enveloped in a layer of sharpened electricity.

"Freedom," he murmured, feeling the infinite mana flow uncontrollably.

Kael thought about his new skill. He didn't speak the skill. Immediately, he transformed into an Unchained Bolt and shot toward a nearby hill to search for prey.

From the sky, Kael saw a group of monsters that fit the biome.

[Blood Skorpion – Level 38]

[HP: 250/250]

[Attack: 80]

[Defense: 60]

[Ash Viper – Level 45]

[HP: 350/350]

[Attack: 100]

[Defense: 70]

Kael dove down with his skill, landing in the middle of the group in less than half a second. His chains, wrapped in the lightning-blade layer, spun around him like a whirlwind.

Two Blood Skorpions and one Ash Viper were sliced in the air. Their bodies separated before hitting the ground, without even knowing what had killed them.

[You have defeated Blood Skorpion – 1800 XP]

[You have defeated Blood Skorpion – 1800 XP]

[You have defeated Ash Viper – 2500 XP]

[You have reached Level 28!]

[Obtained: Scorpion Venom x3, Mana Core (Intermediate) x1]

Kael pressed on, slaughtering every beast that crossed his path. His Unchained Bolt became his primary method of travel, allowing him to cover great distances between attacks. The Scorched World of Pyra witnessed a methodical and brutal massacre. Kael did not hold back.

Over the course of two hours, Kael leveled up repeatedly.

[...You have reached Level 52, 53, 54, 55!]

He reached Level 55. His body felt the click of the fatigue reset.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just then, he noticed a large beast. It resembled a snake, but with stony skin and rudimentary wings. It was a mutated monster.

[Pyra Winged Serpent (Mutated) – Level 68]

[HP: 7000/7000]

[Attack: 180]

[Defense: 150]

[Agility (AGI): 120]

[Mana (MNA): 600]

Kael felt a thrill of excitement. A field boss. Perfect. He launched his attack, aware that this would be a true test. His chains slammed against the snake's stony hide, but only caused superficial cracks. The beast was tough, and its speed, combined with its high defense, was problematic.

I need more power. Kael increased the intensity of the lightning on his chains, the air vibrated, and the energy blades grew larger. He continued the assault, but the beast was quick and managed to evade a critical strike.

In a blink, the Winged Serpent attacked. Its tail hit him like a freight train, slamming him against a pile of volcanic rocks. Kael felt a sharp pain shoot through his side. His vision flickered, and he spat blood.

"Damn it!" Kael groaned, feeling the burn of the scorching venom in his system. He got up, limping slightly.

The beast roared in glee, spitting a poisonous, searing gas, believing it had won.

"Fine... I wanted to see if I could kill you with just this," Kael said, spitting out the remaining blood, one eye squinting from the effort. "It looks like I'll have to go all out."

The air crackled violently. Kael closed his eyes for an instant and channeled a massive amount of mana into his chains, far beyond what was "necessary." He was concentrating the Unchained Bolt not into his body, but into his weapons. The steel of the chains disappeared under a layer of energy that made the lightning blades ten times their size, with a dazzling, violent glow. This was not a normal attack. It was a slice of pure energy, the maximum expression of his Lineage so far.

The beast sensed something was wrong—the earth itself vibrated—but it was too late. Kael vanished.

In an instant, he moved with his skill, circling the beast with a lightning aura in a fraction of a second.

"I'm done playing with you. Time to die," Kael's voice said, echoing everywhere at once.

The gigantic lightning blades sliced the beast to pieces, cutting it clean in half with a cut so precise that Kael landed on the ground at the very moment the mutated serpent's body collapsed.

[You have defeated Pyra Winged Serpent (Mutated) – Level 68 Boss]

[You have reached Level 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67!]

[You have reached Level 67]

[Stat Reset and Total Fatigued Cleared (Level 60)!]

[Obtained: Mana Core (High Grade) x3, Mutated Serpent Hide x1, **Dimensional Storage Bracelet (Rare Grade)** x1]

Kael fell to his knees, the venom and adrenaline subsiding, even as the Level 60 reset was taking effect. He wiped the blood from his lip with the back of his hand, feeling the immense satisfaction of total power. Even if the base of my attack isn't enough, I can overload my mana until it is. I am the limit.

He gathered the loot, and his eyes stopped at the Dimensional Storage Bracelet. It was a simple, highly valuable, and much-sought-after bracelet. He put it on. He thought about his backpack and chains. Both vanished. Kael thought about his chains. Instantly, they appeared in his hands, ready for battle.

"It works like a charm!" he said, smiling. He tested it with his clothes. He stored the torn hunter uniform, and his civilian clothes instantly reappeared. This would serve to instantly switch between his citizen attire and his combat gear. Kael didn't know if it was luck or a reward for the effort, but it was a blessing he had acquired by slaying a mutated creature.

Kael continued hunting. Before the four hours were up, he reached Level 71, achieving another fatigue reset without even realizing that it took normal people months to reach that level.

With the four hours of hunting complete, a portal opened beside him. It was the Association's technology for scheduled extraction. Kael stored all his items and drops in his Storage Bracelet, except for a normal-looking bag that he filled with the largest parts to maintain suspicion.

He exited the portal.

He went to the parts selling station. The agent who inspected his bag was surprised by the quality.

"Looks like you're a powerful hunter," the agent said, handing him a considerable sum. "$120,000 USD for these parts, Level 68. Good work."

Kael left happily. It was serious money, equivalent to six years of his old labor salary.

He called Lilith to tell her about his success.

"Excellent, Kael! Resource extraction is going very well," Lilith said, her joy palpable in her voice. "We've found several good materials for sales, and I've hired more office staff so my workload isn't so heavy. Come see us in a few days; the office is being renovated."

Kael said that was fine, and he hoped they would continue to prosper. He knew she wouldn't get him portals all the time, so he returned home. He believed it was time to tell them the truth, at least to stop lying.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He arrived home. His heart was pounding. It's time to end the lies, Kael told himself, feeling the knot in his stomach. He gathered his wife and children in the living room.

"I want you all to listen to me," Kael said, his voice deep and firm, though he could barely control the tremor in his hands. "I'm not a laborer anymore. I am now a Hunter and affiliated with a guild. Soon I will make my whole family proud, and this house will be too small for what awaits you."

His children laughed, thinking it was one of his jokes. "Stop joking, Dad!"

"It's no joke," Kael said, and pulled out a stack of bills that were a small fraction of what he had earned that day. It was a lot of money. "Look. I made all this money today. And what's more, the guild is still in its initial phases. I don't want to hide anything from you."

Aria looked at the bills falling onto the table, her face crumbling. It couldn't be. A Hunter? The job that ruined her father's life and endangered their loved ones?

"No, Kael! No!" Aria screamed, her voice cracking. She stood up, her eyes full of tears. "Is this why you disappeared? Is this why you've always been lying? And now what? Are you going to die in a portal?! Are you going to leave your children alone?!"

Liam and Sophie's laughter had frozen. They looked at their parents, frightened by the intensity of the fight.

"Aria, please, listen to me. I'm doing this for you," Kael said, feeling the weight of the decision and the guilt, but remaining calm to avoid losing control.

"No! You're doing it for the ambition that has always consumed you! For that stupid pride!" she cried. "I know what that world is like, Kael. I saw what it did to my father, I saw how it left us!"

"But I'm not him!" Kael roared, slamming his hand on the table, causing the bills to jump into the air. Silence fell in the room, cut only by Sophie's sob. Kael felt his heart tear at the sight of his children's frightened faces.

Liam, the eldest, dared to ask, his voice trembling: "Dad... if you're a Hunter... how... how did you suddenly become powerful? Do you have a secret power?"

Kael knelt to their level, looking directly at them. Pride and pain mingled on his face. "I have the power to survive. And I have the power to give you the life you deserve. The truth of how I became strong... that is a secret I still cannot reveal. But I promise you I will tell you very soon. I just need you to trust me for now."

He looked at Aria, who was watching him with fear etched onto her face.

"Trust me, Aria. I won't be the loser anymore. I'm going to be the strongest. Just give me time," Kael said.

Aria looked at him, unable to utter a word, her body trembling with anger and fear. Kael's words held an unshakeable conviction, but the fear she felt for him was greater than the money.

"I don't know what to say to you," she said, her voice barely audible. "But if something happens to you, if you leave us... I won't forgive you."

Kael nodded, taking her hand and kissing it tenderly, feeling he had crossed a point of no return.
