Chapter 256 - Chapter 256: The Foolish S.H.I.E.L.D.

"From this moment on, S.H.I.E.L.D. is on maximum alert."

In the command center of the Helicarrier, Nick Fury issued orders to all S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel:

"According to reliable intelligence, the agent codenamed Black Widow, Natasha Romanoff, has been confirmed as a Hydra spy."

"One day ago, Black Widow's partner, Hawkeye—Clint Barton—broke out of prison. The latest intelligence indicates he is currently in New York."

His voice traveled via electronic transmission throughout the entire Helicarrier. Regardless of what they were doing, every S.H.I.E.L.D. member stopped their work at hand.

"The coming days might not be peaceful, folks. I need several high-level agents to head to New York and arrest Hawkeye as soon as possible."

Nick Fury looked at the list in his hand and read out several names, including Agent Phil Coulson, Agent Hill, and Agent 19.

Beside Nick Fury, Agent Hill stood with her arms crossed, watching with a cold expression as the Director turned off the internal intercom. She said:

"Nick Fury, I'm starting to suspect that you are the fattest Hydra inside S.H.I.E.L.D."

"What are you trying to do?"

Nick Fury looked at Agent Hill with a smile that didn't reach his eyes. He took a few steps forward, placed his hands on her shoulders, and turned her toward the command center's exit:

"Get out."

Having chased Agent Hill away, Nick Fury sat in the command center's chair, interlaced his fingers, closed his eyes, and fell into thought.

Half an hour later, the door to the command center was pushed open, and a high-level S.H.I.E.L.D. agent rushed in with hasty steps.

"Director Fury, why isn't my name on the list?"

Nick Fury swiveled his chair around, resting his chin on the back of his interlaced hands as he looked at the newcomer:

"Garrett."

"Director," the man who had rushed in was none other than the Level 8 S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, Garrett. "Why not me?"

Nick Fury looked at Garrett with a strange expression:

"Because your clearance isn't high enough."

"I am applying to go to New York, Director Fury." Garrett seemed to ignore Nick Fury's comment. "This is a rare opportunity to personally deal with Hydra. You can't always give the missions to Coulson and his team."

"As a former colleague, you should know how strong Black Widow and Hawkeye are when they work as partners," Nick Fury said. "As the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., I cannot simply watch my agents go to their deaths."

Garrett shook his head, looking somewhat disappointed:

"Director, do you not trust me?"

"No, quite the opposite." Nick Fury stood up, walked over to Garrett, and patted him on the shoulder. "Listen, if I didn't trust you, how could I possibly hand over the disposal authority for S.H.I.E.L.D.'s training weapons to you?"

Garrett seemed to realize something:

"It seems Director Fury still doesn't believe in my abilities... But just as you said, I handle the weapons after S.H.I.E.L.D. agent training. Did you know that I've been using all sorts of weapons to train myself, and my training volume far exceeds that of other agents?"

"No," Nick Fury looked at Garrett. "You train like that just to find the right opportunity to take out Hydra?"

"Exactly!" Garrett said without hesitation.

Nick Fury smiled faintly. Just as he was about to speak, his encrypted communication channel rang:

Beep beep beep...

"Agent, I need you to step out for a moment." Nick Fury didn't pick up the call immediately but looked at Garrett and spoke.

Naturally, the S.H.I.E.L.D. Director's encrypted communications couldn't be heard by a Level 8 agent like Garrett. Garrett showed no suspicion; he turned and left the command center, leaning against the wall outside the door to wait quietly.

"Agent 19, report the situation," Nick Fury said in a low voice after Garrett had left the room.

"Report my ass." Agent 19, Barbara "Bobbi" Morse, was two hundred kilometers away from the Cube prison. She held a communication device in one hand and tossed a piece of gum into her mouth with the other. "Didn't you tell me to send you a call request at this time?"

Nick Fury's face remained stern. He didn't speak, simply listening to Mockingbird, Barbara, complain incessantly about being bored on the other end of the line.

This state persisted for three minutes before Nick Fury hung up the communication channel with a poker face and called Garrett back in:

"I just received the latest intelligence... Mockingbird, Barbara, has been critically injured."

Garrett's eyes lit up, but his expression quickly turned nervous:

"What happened to her?"

"In combat with Hydra, she took a knife to the stomach." Nick Fury's expression was exceptionally grave. "Garrett, I need you to replace her and head to New York. Agent Coulson will assist you."

"Hydra again!" Garrett gritted his teeth, looking as if he wanted to tear Hydra into a thousand pieces. "How do I contact Agent Coulson?"

"This is his encrypted frequency." Nick Fury handed over a security key.

Garrett took the key and carefully tucked it into his pocket:

"Wait for my good news, Director Fury."

Nick Fury looked somewhat exhausted and waved his hand: "Go on. Have Agent Hill arrange a helicopter for you."

Garrett didn't leave immediately. Instead, he stood motionless, observing Director Fury's facial expressions:

"Director Fury, Black Widow and Hawkeye have been confirmed as Hydra. Is the source reliable?"

"Agent 19's injury was Hawkeye's doing." Nick Fury's brows furrowed together. "He nearly took Barbara's life."

"I understand." Garrett nodded and turned to leave the command center.

An hour later, carrying his own equipment and tools, Garrett boarded a helicopter bound for New York.

Whir whir whir...

Amidst the noise of the propellers, the helicopter moved further and further away from the Helicarrier. Once it was no longer visible, Garrett quickly hunched over and sprang into action.

He first checked the cabin for any listening devices and verified whether the communication channels were closed.

Only after confirming that S.H.I.E.L.D. wasn't strictly monitoring him did he plop back down into the cockpit seat. The corners of his mouth grew wider and wider, until finally, abandoning all image, he clutched his stomach and burst into laughter.

"Nick Fury, S.H.I.E.L.D., hahahaha! A bunch of jackasses!"

North Brother Island.

For Venom Robin, the Hulk's strength was still too great.

No matter what methods Venom Robin used, he couldn't truly hurt the Hulk. He was more like an annoying fly, buzzing and jumping around the Hulk.

Putting himself in that position, Dr. Otto Octavius felt he would be annoyed to death, perhaps even flying into a rage, but the Hulk did not.

The Hulk's hands opened like two giant palm-leaf fans. Out of every ten swats, three or four would manage to hit Venom Robin.

Once hit, Venom Robin would fly backward at high speed, slamming heavily into the laboratory walls.

In just twenty minutes, the laboratory walls were already covered with over a dozen human-shaped indentations in various poses, all left by Venom Robin.

"Fly!"

"Big Underpants!"

While fighting, the Hulk and Venom Robin didn't stop their mouths either, trading insults back and forth.

Professor Morbius couldn't help but yawn. Even with his vampire constitution, watching their child-like battle made him feel a bit sleepy.

The Hulk was obviously bullying a kid; from start to finish, he hadn't even moved his feet more than a few times.

Yet, in this battle, Venom Robin was in a state of exerting his full power.

But he had only accepted Batman's training for one day. Even though the shroud suit on his body had been fitted with a series of gadgets and tools from Batman, Venom Robin simply couldn't display the ease Batman had shown when fighting the Abomination.

This resulted in Venom Robin relying entirely on instinct to fight the Hulk. Aside from some speed advantages, he couldn't even fully utilize his fifty tons of strength.
