Chapter 35 - Beginning Of An Ending (1/2)

The Morning Was Quiet In A Way That Felt Heavy.

Clouds Hung Low, Stretching Thin Over The Pale Blue Sky, As If Even The Sun Didn't Want To Be Seen. The Streets Were Damp From Last Night's Rain, And The Cold Wind Carried The Smell Of Wet Earth.

Ren Walked With His Bag Slung Over One Shoulder, Hands Buried In His Pockets. The Sound Of His Shoes Against The Pavement Echoed In Small, Lonely Beats. Riko Had Woken Up Just To See Him Off — Her Hair Still Messy, Eyes Half Asleep.

"Don't Zone Out Again, Okay?" She Said, Smiling Sleepily From The Doorway.

Ren Only Nodded, Half A Smile Crossing His Face Before He Left.

Across The Town, Miyu's Morning Was Almost The Same.

Her Brother Leaned Against The Doorframe As She Tightened Her Scarf. "You'll Ace It Anyway," He Said Casually, But There Was A Hint Of Concern Beneath His Teasing Tone.

She Smiled Back, But It Didn't Reach Her Eyes. "I Hope So."

Even Yui, Still Half Awake, Whispered, "Good Luck, Onee-Chan."

Miyu Patted Her Head Softly Before Leaving, The Door Clicking Quietly Behind Her.

At School, The Hallways Buzzed With A Different Kind Of Energy.

Some Students Whispered Notes Under Their Breath, Others Complained About The Subject Before It Even Started. The Usual Noise Of Laughter And Idle Talk Was Replaced By Anxious Whispers And Paper Rustling.

Ren Walked Into The Classroom, Spotting Vicky Waving A Hand Lazily From His Seat.

"Bro, I'm Gonna Fail So Bad," Vicky Groaned Dramatically, His Head On The Desk.

Kaito Laughed, "You Say That Every Time And Still Somehow Pass."

Even Mahito Joined In, "He's Like A Cockroach. Can't Be Destroyed By Exams."

The Group Laughed Briefly — That Small Burst Of Normalcy Breaking The Tension For A Moment.

Ren Smiled, But It Felt Distant. The Laughter Faded Quickly, Replaced By The Familiar Sound Of Chairs Moving And Papers Being Distributed.

When Miyu Walked In, The Room Seemed To Quiet Without Anyone Saying A Word.

She Looked Calm, Composed, Her Bag Slipping Gracefully From Her Shoulder As She Took Her Seat Near The Window. The Morning Light Caught In Her Hair, Framing Her In That Soft, Almost Unreal Glow.

Ren's Eyes Drifted Toward Her, Just Once.

And For A Moment — She Looked Back.

Neither Of Them Smiled. Neither Looked Away Immediately, Either.

It Was A Small, Barely Noticeable Pause — One That Carried Too Much.

The Exam Sheets Were Handed Out.

The Bell Rang.

The Scratch Of Pens Filled The Room Like Rain Against Glass.

Ren Focused On His Paper, But The Words Seemed To Blur Now And Then. His Mind Drifted To Small Things — The Study Session, Miyu's Expression When She Tried To Hide Her Worry, The Silence That Followed After.

Across The Room, Miyu Wrote Without Hesitation.

But There Was A Subtle Tremor In Her Hand, A Faint Unease Behind Her Calm Face. She Tried Not To Think About The Way Ren's Voice Sounded When He Said He Was "Fine."

Hours Passed Quietly.

When The Bell Finally Rang Again, A Collective Sigh Escaped The Room.

Chairs Scraped The Floor, Pencils Rolled Off Desks, Someone Shouted, "Finally!"

Vicky Turned To Ren, "Man, That Was Brutal."

Ren Nodded, Smiling Faintly. "Yeah… It Was."

As The Class Began To Leave, Ren Packed His Things Slowly.

Miyu Walked Past Him To Hand Her Paper To The Teacher's Desk. Their Eyes Met Once More — Briefly, Silently.

It Wasn't Awkward.

It Wasn't Comfortable Either.

Just Quiet.

Ren Left The Room A Minute Later, The Hallway Buzzing With Relief And Tired Voices.

Outside, The Sky Had Grown Duller — The Kind Of Gray That Promised More Rain.

He Exhaled Softly, Watching His Breath Fade Into The Cold Air.

Something About The Day Felt Like The Beginning Of An Ending.

The Next Morning Arrived With The Kind Of Stillness That Made Everything Feel Slower.

The Streets Were Empty, Shops Half-Opened, And The Pale Sky Hung Low Over The Town Like A Blank Sheet. It Was The First Of The Two Rest Days Between Exams — But It Didn't Feel Like Rest At All.

Ren Sat At His Desk, Books Spread Open, Though His Eyes Weren't Really On The Pages.

The Words Blurred Together Into Gray Lines, His Thoughts Wandering To Things That Had Nothing To Do With Equations Or Essays.

Every So Often, He'd Tap His Pencil Against The Table, Glance At His Phone, Then Back To The Page — Only To Find He'd Forgotten Where He Left Off.

Riko Knocked On His Door Once Before Peeking In.

"You Studying Or Just Staring At The Paper Again?"

Ren Looked Up, Half Amused. "Bit Of Both."

She Walked Over And Set A Cup Of Tea Beside Him. "You're Weird When You Think Too Much."

"I'm Always Weird," He Said Quietly.

Riko Smiled. "True. But This Time, You're Quiet-Weird."

He Didn't Answer. He Just Watched The Steam Rise From The Cup Until It Disappeared.

Across Town, Miyu Was Doing The Same Thing — Her Textbooks Spread In Neat Lines Across Her Table, Notes Arranged Perfectly Beside Them.

But Her Mind Was Somewhere Else.

Yui Sat On The Floor Beside Her, Drawing In A Notebook.

"Onee-Chan, Why Do You Study So Much If You Already Know Everything?"

Miyu Smiled Faintly. "Because Knowing Everything Doesn't Mean You Stop Trying."

Yui Looked At Her For A Moment, Tilting Her Head. "But You Look Sad When You Try."

Miyu's Hand Stopped Writing For A Moment. She Looked At Her Sister's Drawing — A Sky Full Of Stars.

"Maybe I Just Forget How To Rest Sometimes," She Said Softly.

Her Brother Passed By The Door A Few Minutes Later, Knocking Twice.

"Hey, Genius, Don't Forget To Eat."

"I Won't."

"Sure You Won't," He Said, Grinning, Before Walking Away.

Miyu Let Out A Quiet Breath, Her Eyes Drifting To The Window. The Afternoon Light Was Soft — Pale And Gentle, Like It Didn't Want To Disturb Anyone.

The Hours Passed Like That — Quiet, Slow, Almost Peaceful In Their Weight.

On The Second Day, The World Felt A Little Lighter.

The Sun Came Out, Stretching Across The Rooftops, Melting The Cold That Clung To The Mornings.

Ren Met Kaito And Mahito At The Café Near The Station.

Mahito Was Half Asleep Over His Notebook.

"I Think My Brain's Rejecting Knowledge," He Groaned.

Kaito Laughed. "Mine Did That Yesterday."

Ren Smiled, Watching Them Bicker Over A Practice Problem Neither Could Solve.

It Felt Good — The Noise, The Jokes, The Familiarity.

"Hey," Kaito Said Suddenly, Leaning Back. "You're Spacing Out Again."

Ren Blinked. "Am I?"

"Yeah," Mahito Added. "You Do That When Something's On Your Mind."

"Maybe I'm Just Tired."

Kaito Shrugged. "Sure. Just Don't Burn Out Before The Next One."

Ren Nodded, But His Thoughts Drifted Back To The Classroom Two Days Ago — The Quiet Moment When Miyu Looked At Him.

He Didn't Know Why It Stuck In His Mind So Much. Maybe Because It Felt Like She Wanted To Say Something But Didn't.

Maybe Because He Did Too.

That Evening, The Sky Turned Orange — A Faint, Blurry Kind Of Light That Faded Too Fast.

Miyu Walked Home From The Library With Chika.

They Talked About The Exam, About How Everyone Was Quiet Lately, About How Even The Teachers Seemed Tired.

Chika Glanced At Miyu After A While. "You've Been… Different."

Miyu Looked Surprised. "Different?"

"Yeah. Not Bad Different. Just… Quieter. Like You're Thinking Too Much."

Miyu Smiled Lightly. "Maybe I Am."

Chika Nodded. "Well, Don't Overdo It. You'll Get Wrinkles Before Graduation."

Miyu Laughed Softly, The Sound Small But Genuine. "I'll Try."

The Wind Picked Up As They Reached The Crossroad Where They Parted Ways.

Miyu Looked Up At The Sky — The First Stars Beginning To Appear.

And Somewhere In The Back Of Her Mind, She Wondered If Ren Was Looking At The Same Sky.

The Morning Of The Final Exam Arrived With The Kind Of Quiet That Felt Almost Suspicious.

The Halls Were Filled With The Rustle Of Papers, The Low Whispers Of Students Making Last-Minute Revisions, And The Occasional Nervous Laughter That Tried Too Hard To Sound Calm.

Ren Walked Into The Classroom, The Familiar Cold Of Winter Clinging To His Hands.

His Friends Were Already There — Kaito Tapping His Pen Like A Drumstick, Mahito Muttering Something About "If I Fail, I'm Dropping Out," And Vicky Just Smiling In That Way He Always Did When He Was Too Tired To Care.

"Morning," Ren Said, Taking His Seat.

Kaito Looked Up. "Morning? Dude, You Look Like You Haven't Slept In A Week."

Ren Shrugged. "Did Anyone?"

That Earned A Few Laughs — The Kind That Lightened The Tension Without Really Easing It.

Across The Room, Miyu Sat Beside Chika, Her Notes Closed, Her Eyes On The Window.

She Looked Calm, Like Always — But Her Fingers Were Tapping Against The Table, Small, Restless Movements That Didn't Match The Stillness Of Her Face.

When Their Eyes Met, It Lasted Only A Second.

Just Enough For Both To Know The Other Felt The Same.

The Bell Rang. The Room Fell Silent.

The Test Began.

Papers Rustled, Pens Moved, Clocks Ticked.

Outside, The Wind Brushed Against The Windows, Carrying The Distant Sound Of A Passing Train.

Ren Tried To Focus, But His Mind Slipped In And Out Of The Questions.

He Answered What He Could, Guessed What He Couldn't.

Every Now And Then, His Eyes Drifted To The Side — To Miyu's Desk, Her Hand Moving Smoothly Across The Page.

She Didn't Notice Him Looking, But Somehow, He Knew She Felt It.

Halfway Through, He Leaned Back For A Moment, Staring At The Ceiling.

His Thoughts Felt Like A Mix Of Relief And Dread — The Kind That Comes When Something Is Ending, But You're Not Sure What Comes After.

When The Bell Finally Rang, It Was Like The Whole Class Exhaled At Once.

Some Cheered, Some Groaned, Some Just Dropped Their Heads On Their Desks In Relief.

Kaito Stood Up, Stretching Dramatically. "That's It! I'm Free! If I Ever See A Textbook Again, It's By Accident!"

Chika Threw Her Eraser At Him. "You Say That Every Time."

Mahito Laughed. "He Means It Every Time Too."

Even The Teacher Smiled As She Collected The Papers. "Congratulations, Everyone. You've Survived."

The Room Erupted In Lighthearted Noise — Chairs Scraping, Bags Zipping, Voices Rising.

But Amid The Laughter, Ren Stayed Still For A Moment, Watching Miyu From A Distance.

She Was Smiling — The Kind Of Smile That Looked More Like Relief Than Joy.

And For A Second, He Felt It Too.

When The Bell Rang Again For Dismissal, They All Left Together — Their Group Walking Down The Hallway Bathed In Late Afternoon Light.

Kaito Talked Nonstop, Chika Complained About His Voice Being Louder Than The School Bell, And Mahito Pretended To Be Deeply Emotional About Finishing The Term.

Ren Just Walked Beside Them, Listening.

Every Word, Every Laugh Felt Like A Reminder Of How Much Had Changed.

At The End Of The Hall, He Glanced Back Once.

Miyu Was Still There, Packing Her Bag Slowly, Her Hair Catching The Sunlight Through The Window.

He Wanted To Say Something — Anything.

But Instead, He Just Watched Until She Looked Up, And Their Eyes Met One More Time.

This Time, Neither Looked Away.

It Lasted Only A Moment.

But It Felt Like Something Shifted.

Something Quiet, Inevitable.
