In the middle of the night, Larti, seeing her husband sound asleep, snoring loudly, crept out of the house. Each step was carefully timed to avoid making a sound.
"Hopefully he won't wake up," she whispered softly, occasionally glancing back to make sure her husband was still sleeping soundly.
Larti quickly put on a sarong over her head, covering her entire face, leaving only her eyes to see in the darkness. Her hands trembled slightly as she tied the sarong.
"Okay, I'm ready. This is for the one million rupiah," she muttered, taking a deep breath.
With a flashlight in hand, the middle-aged woman walked through the darkness. The sounds of crickets and nocturnal animals frightened Larti slightly. Her heart pounded every time she heard a strange noise.
"Oh God, why does this night feel so eerie?" she whispered, her voice trembling.
But when she remembered the one million rupiah she would soon receive, that fear vanished and was replaced by a desire to complete her mission.
