Chapter 169
Xavier's POV
The phone's been ringing for over a minute, and still, he hasn't answered.
"Come on, Joe… pick up," I muttered, pacing through my room like a caged animal. My thumb hit redial again and he still didn't answer. Instead, it went straight to voicemail.
His deep voice played through the static, "Leave a message," then went silent again.
I threw the phone onto the bed, my jaw tight.
"Damn it," I growled. My chest felt like it was caving in. I haven't been able to breathe properly, and I've been trying to reach him all day. I need to.
Jane's little "invitation" came in this morning, for a dinner date. A private dinner. I know exactly what that means.
She's expecting more than dinner. And no matter how much I tell myself I can handle it, I know I can't. Not when I'm in a great place with Sonia. Not when Sonia's face is the one burned into my soul every time I close my eyes.
